I am all for it (the storytelling challenge)!  I think I have a character concept and everything now!  Just make sure you provide a link to help us find it!  :-)

PS: Bonus points for merging two challenges together? :-D

@Thorien - I agree with you about the guys who only seek destruction without giving anything back.

I can't see how my character even though he is doing something bad he does not give something equally or much better back. He is constantly killing bandits, necromancers, undead, vampires, dragons 24/7 and even saves the whole world if that is not doing good and saving countless people then I don't know what it is. I do admit that he is bad but he is not the worst of the lot, he gives and takes as well.

Also from what you are saying I get it as anything goes if your end goal can justify your actions. Well my character's purpose is indeed to get stronger and he might commit some bad things in order to do that but he also wants to do good and leave the simple people go about their lives without worries. Besides he will first try to take something peacefully without conflict then he will go for the bad way and try to steal it which is his bad element and then as a last resort he might fight for it. So since my end purpose is good enough and will also save countless lives whatever I do in the process goes?  Then that would not make this character bad at all since everything he does is not only for his personal gain but also for another great and good purpose which is to keep the world going and not have dragons, necromancers, vampires etc roaming about threatening the people. That's why I said my character is a realist but he does have a bad side he 's just not the type of chaotic evil guy, he has limits and will also give a lot back probably more than what he takes.

Regarding the Thalmor you forget that the First and Second Aldmeri dominion had also someone else as well having authority and could somewhat keep the Thalmor in check and vice versa. In this Third dominion the Thalmor have complete control of every authority. Also my bad not phrasing this better but what I meant was that after Talos they lost all authority so I am sure right now they are mad and bent on revenge but even if they want revenge they should have thought first about all the Altmer and plan better than going for the Great War. The Altmer have very low birthrate and it takes many, many years for an Altmer couple to have a child. The humans on the other hand can replenish their fighting power in like 20 years, one more blunder like the Great War and Hammerfell and they can land themselves in a pretty bad situation and drag the entirety of the Altmer along with their ideals of supremacy over Men and w/e else they want to do.

There is much difference between the First, Second dominion and the Third. Do you get any of the highly intellectual thing going on for the Elves from the Thalmor you meet? Even in the dialogue you ask questions about Talos worship and they really want to make you "confess" and no matter what they don't arrest you they straight up kill you lol. I believe this is Bethesda's intention on how to portray and make this Dominion to be much more bloodthirsty and "overly nationalist" and no matter what we say they are the ones making the decisions on how to portray each character/faction. These guys are only out for blood and killing nothing more.

All the great Altmer scholars and thinkers are Thalmor, like every single one of them? I don't think that would be the case and we don't know the state of Atlmer society after Thalmor rule on the contrary I think there are sources mentioning social upheaval not sure though about when.

The Psijics have no obligation to belong to the Altmeri government of the Thalmor. They left the Altmeri society and Summerset thousands of years ago and went on their island of Artaeum and they have never called any allegiance or subordinance to the Summerset Isles or its rulers. The Psijics might have claimed independance but they never cut ties with the Altmer rulers in such a manner as they did now so that is what got me thinking and we can also see it as another sign of Bethesda wanting to portray this Dominion like I described above.

There is also another important thing you hear Ancano say that they think they are a rogue group who think they are above the law. What law? When did the Psijics followed any of the Summerset Isles law since they left thousands of years ago? They made it clear they only follow the old ways of the Aldmer and they want nothing to do with the Altmer society/laws and that is why they left.

He also says they clashed with the Aldmeri Dominion before. My guess would be that the Thalmor are just salty that they can't control and benefit from the power the Psijics hold and of course they are afraid of them but most likely they should have went to them and say sometihng like Sup, we 're the Thalmor of the 3rd Aldmeri dominion come with us and join the dominion (Ancano's talk about laws) so we can blow up all Men with your magic and our armies. Then the Psijics said no and broke their hearts. :/  I can totally picture that. :P

On another note I started a character according to the topic's challenge.

    Race: Orc

Name: Morgul - after he left the stronghold he is not using his stronghold's name but only his first given name.

    Class: Battlemage

Cantrips: Bound Sword (Arcane Weapon from Forgotten Magic), Candlelight

Schools: Conjuration, Alteration, Restoration. Bound Bow will also be used sometimes in order to hunt animals for furs and food.

Mods: Ordinator, Forgotten Magic, Imperious Races

Backstory: After secretly reading some books about magic belonging to the Wise-Woman of his stronghold he almost became obsessed with the idea of becoming a mage and he decided to leave the Stronghold secretly one night after he had prepared enough in order to travel and learn more about magic. After traveling around for quite some time he heard about the College of Winterhold and how dedicated it was on the study of magic without worrying about the world or politics much and he decided to make the trip into Skyrim and see if they will accept him. Thus his adventure began.

Pretty generic backstory I know but was kinda bored to think something better :D

Wow this really took a off topic turn.  However much of the discussion was interesting, maybe a seperate topic focused on RPing necromancers?  I know I've seen RP guides for other classes is there one already for the necromancer?

@ Vez I would love to see how the story ends for Edel found his journey very fun to read about, in fact I will probably play a version of that character myself at some point, like the RP that much. :D

@Duvain Yay for more orc mages.  Berzerker Rage saved my orcs butt on more than one occasion making the race a really solid choice for the Grimoire challenge.

@Vargr - Yeah an RP discussion on necromancers would be cool to have as a seperate topic on the RP section.

I 've played very few Orc characters this one is my 3rd actually but I gotta say I always have fun playing Orcs. Especially when I played one as a thief it felt pretty damn good for some reason. Playing an Orc as a total wuss sneaking to avoid enemies and killing only when there was no other alternative in roundabout and nefarious ways and if things go very bad just run and GTFO. :P

Also that pariah / outcast thing they have going on for them can give some RP ideas.

@Duvain, I see. So your guy is indeed somewhat like the one from the story I told you. He sees himself as a good guy and kills people only when he thinks they are evil or mistreated him or stand in his way.

The "someone else" in the First and Second Dominion was the High Queen. Who was actually the one who put the Thalmor in charge. The Thalmor is a council. Something like a parliament. In history, both in TES and the real world, parliaments always were created to "keep in check" or even replace monarchs, not the other way around. If anything, a council seems a much more stable and progressive form of government than a monarch.

You are saying that they shouldn't have started the Great War, but then after some time another warmongering emperor would show up and start a war against them first. It happened multiple times through history and it would inevitably happen again. They just chose to make it happen the way that benefitted them more.

During a war (and Skyrim is at war) people kill each other for even lesser things than pestering soldiers who are transporting a prisoner and asking them stupid questions. For the Thalmor, every person in Skyrim is a potential enemy. Which is true, is it not? Also correct me if I'm mistaken, but don't the Imperials attack you too if you don't go away in time?

I didn't say all Altmer scholars are Thalmor, I said that the highest ranked members of the Thalmor are scholars. It's not the same. Of course there were dissenters. There's no doubt that there were people who benefitted from the Imperial regime, all sorts of half-bloods and bastards and apraxic mer who wouldn't fare so well under the original Dominion law.

The Psijics are an organization of a great power. It's a fact. Now think of it like this. You are a ruler of a country. And your closest neighbor is a totally independent organization that owns a nuclear bomb. Yes, they have owned it for a long time and didn't drop it on your head, but who knows what will happen in the future? If they decide to drop it, you can't stop them. Okay, that organization says that they are minding their own business, but can you be sure? Would you trust such guys just because they said they are good? Also don't forget that they used to help the Imperials in the past, and it's only logical for the Thalmor to not trust them. Really, what do you think any of the real life governments would think about an organization like the Psijics?
