Oh, I also don't like these types of characters they become kinda boring even inside a story. I 've read some online novels with such characters who were villains, it was kinda refreshing because you read about the cool guy hero most of the times but yeah people who like the cool guy heros wouldn't bear to read about these types of characters.

Actually I wouldn't mind reading about such a one, his thought process could be quite fascinating.

Still that is the way all big factions operate they will fight and most likely at some point kill for resources. Bandits, thieves, assassins, wizards, Imperials, Stormclaoks, Thalmor they all fight and have gotten their hands dirty for resources one way or the other but just on a larger scale. The only difference is that they have the recognition of a bigger team so it is easier to justify their actions to many. I don't understand if you consider the actions of this character as disgusting the actions of the others shouldn't be too far off from that as well only difference being the scale and not the nature of the action. I don't know which people this will leave to like maybe only priests and peasants who have never done anything outside of the laws because even guards are geting bribes so they are eqally guilty.

You know, everything in the world is about exchange. Everything and everyone, be it a group or an individual, a person or an animal or a plant, they take something from the world and give something to the world. And that something can contribute to the world's prosperity and development or to its degradation. With big groups it has more impact, with individuals less, but it's still the same mechanism.

So when someone only takes and doesn't give anything back, or gives back only destruction and chaos, it's bad for the world. Maybe it's only on a small scale, maybe it's not immediate, but it's still something. Now imagine, if everyone will be like that, what kind of place the world would turn into?

No it's not only priests and peasants that I like. I like people who contribute to the world's prosperity, not degradation. Or at least who exist in balance with the world. They don't have to be good. I can even tolerate a guy with a totally evil mindset if he actually contributes to the world, even if his goal is totally egoistic.

But the guys who only take and don't give anything but shit, those make me sick.

Now how does your guy contribute to the world? From what you said about him so far I see that he only takes. Also, you say he challenges people who own artifacts. So if some person who is actually good owns an artifact and uses it for something good, he will kill that person and take the artifact for himself. Not to make the world better and help others, just so he can be more powerful and survive for longer.

Nothing happens without a reason. You don't have an angry mob running at you to kill you without some reason. So if it was me and I was innocent, I'd run. Hide. Try to find out what caused that. And deal with the reason, not with the consequence.

Factions are created and consist of individuals. A faction represents a cause, and it has its goals and rules under which it operates. Fighting for something, power or resources or whatever, doesn't make a faction good or evil. What does is the goal they need it for and the way how they will use it.

How much have you read about the Thalmor? They were the ruling faction of the Dominion since the First Dominion and all the way until the Talos conquered Alinor. They aren't some little group that snatched the power by a chance. They are the legitimate rulers of the Dominion. They don't enforce some ideas they came up with, they enforce the Aldmeri tradition and law, which existed for millennia. Of course they rule with an iron fist. If they didn't, Alinor would be consumed by infighting and dissent like the Empire is and always was. And in case you forgot, the scholars and thinkers you mentioned are actually the ones who have the most influence in the Altmeri society, not warriors and such, like it is with the men. So the Thalmor council are scholars and thinkers too, they are not some military government.

Also, they aren't against the Psijic order, they see them as a rogue organization. An organization with power that wants to retain its independence from the government. Which has unknown goals and can be dangerous. What government, unless it consists of complete idiots, would approve of such an organization operating in their country? It doesn't really matter what they gave the Altmer in the past, now their order consists of different people and their agenda can be totally different. Something unknown cannot be trusted, it's only natural.

The first and foremost rule of those who fight trolls says that one must be equipped to fight a troll. Apparently Edel was too distracted by his investigation to remember that and forgot to buy the book "Troll Slaying", the most important book. RIP Edel... though I suspect there won't be much peace in his afterlife in Quagmire.

You should write a story about him, it should be interesting.

    RIP, Edel!

Wow, I disappear for the weekend and there are 10 pages of posts! :-)  I'm still pondering my new build some, especially after the discussions about alignment and journaling.  Thanks, Thorien!  :-D

Tbh, I feel somewhat awkward about every next wall of text I write, Idk, like I can't just stop ranting, lol. Discussions about such topics as ethics, morals, psychology, etc. are just too tempting, I can't help it) But I'm glad that someone can find benefit in this)

And speaking of journaling, I have an idea for a sort of storytelling challenge, would you like something like that?

Oh, but that means that my story challenge might be just for you. I think it might be nice for guys who aren't very confident about their writing skill and would like to improve it (like myself).
