@seriouslyitsmyname--give Alastor's Transient Sorcerer a read. Pure mage that relies mainly on low-level (read this as almost entirely Novice spells except for Adept level Alteration) AND a wanderer. Scroll down to his "Wanderlust" section to get a quick idea as to what the build is all about. Honestly, it sounds like just what the doctor ordered ;D

seriouslyitsmyname said:Hey guys! After years of playing, I've grown tired of Skyrim's major questlines, but there are still many areas I have yet to visit. So I would like to play some wanderer-type or similar character that fulfills most of these requirements:
- -RP motivation for exploring dungeons/landmarks that aren't targets of quests. Exploration for the sake of exploration feels forced to me
- -Possibly some gameplay benefit from exploration, too. (Maybe alchemy?)
- -Should be able to get your essential equipment/spells/abilities very early
- -No permanent residence, you should only need as much stuff as you can carry
- -Only one crafting skill or none at all
- -Some degree of variation in combat tactics so I won't get bored by lvl20
Usually, I prefer mages to thieves and thieves to warriors (mostly because of the last point), but any archetype should be fine. I would appreciate any recs, even if it's a build that only partially fits my description, but you think it may give me some ideas to make my own. Thanks in advance!
I would recommend ShinJin and Lozhar's The Knights of Iron. While it does use all 3 crafting skills, it flows very naturally and hits all other criterias perfectly. Give it a try, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I am looking for a barbarian mage build. I know about the arcane barbarian and that is not what I want since I want this character to wear armor.

I'm not sure what kind of mage you are looking for but The Clever Man by Paul England is a great barbarian/necromancer build.
