    The Flamescale

Flames... a burning inferno, consuming everything in its wake.  Men, mer, beastfolk, living, undead, and even the gods themselves, burnt inside the raging typhoon of flame to naught but ashes. A vision, consuming your consciousness in your deep slumber, the jostles and movements of the cart only barely registering in your mind. The dancing fire, consuming the logs. The burning scent of hair and skin and bone and steel. Finally, your own visage, cloaked in flame, swimming in the destruction, basking in the warmth, burning to so many others but to you, comforting. Like a long lost family member, embracing you and showing you the kind of power many only dream of. In the end, you are all that's left and it becomes clear- you are the cause. You burned them. You burned all of it, and stood to tell your tale.

And oh how good it feels.

The Flamescale. An argonian, normally a race that lives in damp, disgusting and diseased swamps, who has become obsessed with flame and ash and inferno. My initial idea for this build was just the concept of someone who loved fire, like a souped-up pyromaniac and it eventually became ever so much more. The flamescale no longer simply enjoys fire- he has become fire itself. All of his equipment and skills speak to this, and he starts as a regular argonian but as time goes on the flame infects the fabric of his being. This being my first build here, any criticism is greatly appreciated.

    Backstory

Born in Black Marsh, the Firescale was born to an entirely unremarkable family. Nothing of note happened in the Firescale's life, from hatching to coming of age.. until the night after he came of age, a dream came to him. Fire. It was nothing but a burning orb of red-hot flames, constantly undulating and consuming every thought he threw at it. When he awoke, he discovered he was bathed in flame, and though the flames burnt his scales and damaged his flesh underneath, he still found it... oddly comforting.

Their family home burnt down that night, and he felt guilty for some reason. He knew it could not have been him, but at the same time the flames DID start from his own bed... He decided to leave his home, for fear of causing more damage to his loved ones. He traveled aimlessly, until he came accross an Imperial and Stormcloak skirmish, and the flames of the burning camp triggered a memory of the dream. Immediately, the Flamescale's mind warped, as if melted by a fire he couldn't see, and he immediately crossed the border, towards the flames until he was captured. While he was unconscious on the ride to Helgen, he had another dream. This time, the orb was more than just a static undulating mass... it consumed everything he saw, and near the end of his dream, the fire came closer only for him to behold his own face in the towering inferno. As he awoke, and was sent to his daeth all he could think about was fire. For some reason unbeknownst to him, fire stopped being something to fear- instead, he found himself itching for it. And as Alduin burnt down Helgen in an attempt to kill the dragonborn, this feeling of sentimental connection to the flames only became stronger, and his mind finally shattered. Now free from his bonds, and with his mind still burning with power and inspiration, he travels the map of Skyrim, craving to spread the flames to all within reach- whether they want it or not, and regardless of how it affects them. He was now the Flamescale, and fire wasn't just something he knew- fire became EVERYTHING he knew.

    Personality

The Firescale is like the fire itself- hot-headed, temperamental and destructive. While he can create, he prefers to simply burn anything he beholds. People, animals, animunculi, anything that can burn will. As such, playing the firescale is akin to playing a serial killer, except he doesn't do it out of malice. He simply thinks that flame is everyone's destiny. If anyone threatens you, attacks you, or even so much as looks at you funny, you feel compelled to burn them to a crisp. This does not, however, mean that you do so without thought- if you would be endangered, resist the urge, or find a way to do it discreetely. Which, admittedly, is going to be hard to do).

Encountering mages is an entirely different situation however. When entering a dungeon that contains magic characters, your goal becomes to overpower and prove that your flame burns hotter than anything. Ice mages are absolutely to be dealt with harshly- incinerate them and melt their very being down to nothing. Shock mages are similar fodder- lightening may burn, but it is nothing but  a corruption of what makes up your soul. And when combating a fire mage, they are to be destroyed with impunity. While fire mages may have your respect due to their choice of element, you have to prove that your flame burns hotter than anyone else.

Undead and vampires are similarly to be destroyed- if their papery flesh is so sensitive to the flame, then they are too weak to deserve life and you need to destroy them like the pathetic excuses for lifeforms that they are. To that end, you absolutely positively will NOT allow yourself to become a vampire. That would make you weak to the element that keeps you alive, and would be like driving a wedge between a dog and his master. (Note- while this build does not absolutely require any mods, Dawnguard is a huge boon, and if you have this dlc, absolutely side with the Dawnguard. You don't care about their heart or compassion, but they are as intolerant of the highly flammable undead as you are.)

Trolls are also good fodder- you know your flame can defeat them easily, singing their wounds closed so they cannot regenerate. Don't hold back.

Finally are the dragons. Frost dragons and any dragon that uses frost is absolutely inexcuseable. Dragons that use fire, however, follow the same rules as fire mages- your fire is strongest and you must burn them with impunity as you would the mages who claim falsely to have mastered fire.

Any magic that does fire damage (including shouts and unique powers) are your goal- you wish to master every form of flame that exists, with no exceptions. Your goal is simple- become the aspect of flame itself.

    Concept and Playstyle

The flamescale, as stated earlier, came about from a personal obsession of mine, to create characters that felt a full-spectrum connection with an element. The firescale's element (obviously) is fire, and his playstyle reflects that- its very advantageous that the characters very first spells are Flames and Healing. Right out of the gate, equip a weapon of choice in the right hand and Flames in the left. Never use a shield- you are well aware that shields are completely useless against fire, and you wouldn't use one anyway. The way this character plays is a cross between a spellsword and an elemental mage- using fire to weaken enemies and then cutting them down with your dagger/sword/axe/mace. If you can, equip flame spells in both hands and burn them down that way. When you run out of magicka, switch to a weapon (preferably with a fire enchantment) and cut them down or hold them off till you have more magicka. No holds barred, no punches pulled, you're a devastating whirlwind of flames and blades. And if you get depleted magicka-wise, or for some of the more... powerful techniques, switch to dual wielding your chosen weapons and have at it.

    Skills and Stats

    STAT SPREAD- 1 Magicka / 1 Health / 0 Stamina

The Flamescale only has a few skills, and not much else- the challenge comes from the fact that most enemies can withstand a fiery blast or two, and the fact that you're not wearing the heaviest armor.
The Flamescale's skills are: One-Handed, Destruction, Light Armor, Enchanting and Smithing, with a very minor skill in the form of Archery (gotta have SOMETHING to take down dragons with, and most fire spells have abysmal range.) One-Handed is used for the weapon in the right hand, because this character is as much warrior as he is mage (and when you run out of magicka, switch to dualwielding to chop them apart). The weapon in the right hand should always have a fire enchantment once you get one. Even if it's just one point, its still needed at least for roleplaying purposes. Destruction is the main combat skill, spewing fire and unleashing great bouts of flame to consume your enemies (pity the spells don't actually turn people to ash). Light Armor may seem like an odd choice for such a combat oriented character but the light armor perks allow you to stay mobile, like a whirling dervish of incineration. Smithing and Enchanting allow you to optimize your damage output and surviveability, and finally Archery allows you to attack dragons that are outside your range early on.( I had initially planned to add points to Illusion, but it seems that the Aspect of Terror bug has been fixed, making it useless to the build.)

    Perk Spread (LVL 41)-

         One-Handed: Armsman 5/5, Dual-Flurry 2/2

Destruction: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert and Master destruction, Augmented Flames 2/2, Destruction Dual Casting

Enchanting: Enchanter 5/5, Fire Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter, Corpus Enchanter, Extra Effect, Soul Squeezer

Smithing: Steel Smithing, entire left side of skill tree up to Dragon Armor, Arcane  Blacksmith

Light Armor: Agile Defender 4/5, Custom Fit, Unhindered, Wind-Walker

         Archery: Overdraw 2/5

(For level fifty, I would strongly suggest Dual Savagery, the weapon specialization perks (Bladesman, Hack-n-Slash or Bone Breaker), the rest of the Light Armor tree and Dwarven Smithing, especially if you have the Dawnguard DLC)

         Equipment

Firegod's Helm- Dragon Scale Helmet with Archery damage and Destruction cost reduction

Firegod's Cuirass- Dragon Scale Armor with Health regeneration and Health increase

Firegod's Boots- Dragon Scale Boots with Fire resistance and One-Handed damage

Firegod's Gauntlets- Dragon Scale Gauntlets with One-Handed Damage Archery damage and One-Handed damage

Firegod's Ring- Silver Ruby Ring with Magic Resistance and Destruction cost reduction

Firegod's Amulet- Gold Diamond Necklace with Magic Resistance and Destruction cost reduction

Firegod's Bow OR Firegod's Arbalest (Arbalest requires Dawnguard) - Daedric OR Dragonbone (if Dawnguard) Bow/ Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow (with Dawnguard) enchanted with Fire Damage and Health absorption

Blade/Axe/Hammer of Flame's Wrath and Blade/Axe/Hammer of Flame's Cruelty- Daedric or Dragonbone (requires Dawnguard) Sword/Axe/Mace with Fire Damage and Health absorption

    Powers, Shouts and Stones

Lord Stone- Adds 50 points of armor rating and 25% magic resistance- this works for the character, as eventually the Firescale's body is more flame than flesh, so dmage passes through him to a greater degree.

Shouts- Absolutely positively must use Fire Breath. When you meditate on a word of power, definitely meditate on Yol to get the fire damage buff (The Fire Within is bugged to sometimes apply the fire damage buff for the shout to all fire damage, making the already impressive power granted by Fire Enchanter and Augmented Flames  truely ludicrous). Become Ethereal is also very important, as when you get too hurt you can roleplay being turned to completely undamageable flames for a short amount of time, and it allows enough time to cast the master Destruction spell without being interrupted.

Powers- Again, The Fire Within, gleaned from Paarthanax by meditating on the word of power Yol is very important for keeping Fire Breath feasible, as well as the bug mentioned above.

    Combinations

Untouchable Inferno- Dual-Casted Flame Cloak->Become Ethereal

Blazing Retaliation- Dual-Casted Flame Cloak->Dual-Wielded Weapons

Infernal Wave-Dual-Casted Fireball or Incinerate->Fire Breath

Towering Inferno- Circle of Flame Wall->Dual-Casted Flame Cloak->Become Ethereal

(With Dragonborn) Infernal Purge- Become Ethereal-> Fire Storm->Sun Flare

    With Dragonborn and Dawnguard

While the official dlc for Skyrim are not by any means required to play this build, having both of them opens up multiple opportunities and new abilities. With Dawnguard, you can join the Dawnguard and create dragonbone weapons (as well as having access to the powerful Crossbows) and with Dragonborn the Fire Breath shout is further augmentable.

The Crossbow from Dawnguard is extremely powerful (having as much and then more damage than the most powerful bow in the game in exchange for being much slower to fire), and the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow is even more obscenely powerful than the first crossbow as well as ignoring half of an opponents armor (armor doesn't work against flames now does it?); however, the crossbow itself is not the greatest boon of this dlc, but the ammunition it adds to the game- with the dlc and sufficient sidequesting, you gain access to the Exploding Bolts, and the first of the bolts you'll receive are the Steel and then Dwarven Exploding Bolts of Fire, which can decimate most enemies even with as little has been put into archery as detailed above. All you need are the matching bolts and Fire Salts and you have ever more powerful ranged capability, even when you're out of magicka.

The Dragonborn dlc also adds a couple fire-related abilities that can be invaluable to the Firescale. First and foremost is an ability gained by the Black Books of Hermaeus Mora, specifically the black book Epistolary Acumen, which grants the dragonborn the choice between three different abilities- the one we want here is Dragonborn Flame, which allows enemies you destroy with the Fire Breath Shout to spawn a Fire Wyrm to attack your enemies (the Fire Wyrm is essentially the fire version of the Ice Wraith). The other ability you can gain from the dlc is granted by the Solstheim equivalent of the Standing Stones, one of which is the Sun Stone. The Sun Stone grants a single-use ability called Sun Flare that does 100 damage centered around you, akin to the Firestorm spell but free of magicka use. Unfortunately, once used the spell is gone and must be reacquired at the sun stone.

    Quests-

Companions- At least to the initial proving quest, because that allows access to the dungeon that contains the first word of Fire Breath.

Master Destruction Quest- The fire spell gained from this quest is the very first spell you get, saving money and granting you the most powerful fire spell in existence.

The Throat of The World- It's also essential to get to Paarthanax so that you can meditate on the word of power Yol.

Any other quest that allows you to destroy enemies with your flames is more than acceptable, especially anything that allows you to destroy other mages using other elements, or the undead. If you have Dragonborn, definitely complete the main quest so you can prove you're stronger than Miraak and if you have Dawnguard, definitely side with the Dawnguard to incinerate the undead for being so weak against his flames.

And there you have it- The Firescale. I hope that you enjoy it, and again, some criticism is greatly appreciated- it likely isn't anywhere near perfect, but I hope you enjoy it regardless.

Addendum-I greatly appreciate all of the advice I've been given so far, I hope that the changes I've made are for the better, and I still appreciate yet more criticism if it's needed. None of the images I've used were created by me, just in case they're not public domain or something.

This is your first build, I assume, and it is really good. A few things however are check up on spelling issues and the sort, add more pictures, and maybe make a perk spread. Look at any other build. Most of them have one. First like and +1 from me

Oh question. How hard were fire dragons to deal with? Especially at the start. Did you use a bow mostly?

Hey there Stefen, before I go into a few quick recommendations and pieces of advice, let me just say that I really do quite like this build, it's excellent for a first build and you seem eager to improve it. Mainly what I'll be focusing on is improving the presentation of the build because really that's the only area you need to work on. You've got an interesting backstory, the gameplay is awesome, I really love those Special Moves. One quick suggestion there considering you recommended a few things if we took it to level 50,  I'dd add Illusion for the Invisibility spell, it can work some really awesome combos in with Fire Attacks (My favorite is Invisibility + Sun Stone Power + Fire Breath with Dragonborn Flame, really awesome combo)

Right, presentation. Overall the presentation of your text is just fine, everything's lined up well, you've bolded appropriate sections and made everything very clear. The only small addition I'd make is when your listing perks, to bold the name of the skill so we can more easily tell them apart with a quick glance, something like this.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Perk Spread (LVL 41)

(I'd increase the size of this too, as well as all other section headers like Equipment, Quests)

    One-Handed: Armsman 5/5, Dual-Flurry 2/2

Destruction: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert and Master destruction, Augmented Flames 2/2, Destruction Dual Casting

(Personally I prefer to write Novice - Master Destruction rather than individually naming each one, makes it a tad quicker).

Enchanting: Enchanter 5/5, Fire Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter, Corpus Enchanter, Extra Effect, Soul Squeezer

Smithing: Steel Smithing, entire left side of skill tree up to Dragon Armor, Arcane  Blacksmith

Light Armor: Agile Defender 4/5, Custom Fit, Unhindered, Wind-Walker

    Archery: Overdraw 2/5

    --------------------------------------------------------

However, the real thing you should work on is adding in some more interesting pictures, I know that Lizard artwork can be a bit tough to find (especially nice ones fitting a theme) but I'll see if I can't help out a little there.

I think you've got a great build that just needs a bit more work for everyone to see it. Awesome work on your first build, I hope I've helped out a little here, and that I'd be able to see more builds from you in the future

Bows. Bows bows bows. At that point I had Dawnguard and was lucky enough not to encounter any dragons till I got there, so I just grabbed a crossbow and decided I'd shoot it till it landed, then dualwielded axes and just went nuts till it died. I still use the crossbow most times i see a fire dragon, just cuz once its on the ground i can kill it pretty easily. And thank you very much for your help ^^

I very very much appreciate the advice, and I'll definitely remember the combination suggestion. As for the presentation, I felt like something was missing, so I appreciate you confirming my thoughts. Next build i do (likely to be very soon) I'll be triply sure to add more pictures, and do the change to the perk spread. Since this is my first ever post here, I CAN edit it once it's submitted right?

  • June 7, 2016

Yeah you can edit it mate, at the top left of your build above the title you should see options, after clicking that edit discussion is the very first option (and there are definitely no rules against it, I'd be screwed over by typos otherwise ).

Glad I could help out in the end, and if you need anything else don't hesitate to ask

One question Stefan, what difficulty did you play this build on?? I like the concept, just needs a few more pics and maybe perk chart like others said. Keep up the good work +1

For a first build, this is put together very well! Keep improving it with formatting and pictures and it will keep piling on the likes, I'm sure of it :D

Excellent for a first build, good job. Got my +1
