This build contains spoilers to Dragonborn. View at your own discretion*.

I wanted to play something unique and something quite memorable. Part of this build comes from when I used to play Neverwinter Nights 2, and I remember a build on there a swedish guy I know had; He was always whizzing about, and managed to cross a game area within seconds. He could crash through a dungeon and smear stuff up walls before you'd even got your ass through the dungeon entrance to help him and your other party members out, my builds always looked like metaphorical dragon dung to that monster of a thing.

I never managed to find  out the formula except a few class feats from a Druid and a Monk... gladly, this build is not based on either of those classes....but I got something very close to the speed attribute in Skyrim.

The other part of this build was based on all the 'ash' aspects of the new Dragonborn DLC, that I finally got round to discovering the best aspects of, namely the ash spells and abilities.

The idea and premise of the build, by incorporating and adding cohesion between these two ideas, is to skillfully outmatch your opponents in both speed and misdirection, by slinging around a vast array of fatal and physically damaging ash spells, whilst outmanoeuvring your opponents blows and strikes with amazing haste. This build utilizes the fastest weapons in the game whilst his magicka may be recharging, and uses them to damage his foes and demolish them quickly, being able to take down the quickest of enemies with extreme ease. His early weapon enchantments before you attain your endgame weapons are useful and practical, and manage to achieve this objective extremely well, making this a viable build even at very low levels.

I created and joined the two major ideas. I give you (I think you can agree the name rolls off the tongue brilliantly, even if it is a little juvenile) ...

    "The Ash Dasher"

Tearing across Skyrim's plains deep with the forested woodlands and mountain glacier's ...is the Ash Dasher.

Few know exactly what the Ash Dasher is capable of, few have lived to even know what he looks like, etombed in coffin-like shells of molten rocked ash,

ensnared by their own lack of combat prowess, they are whittled away by the growing ash clouds that engulf their lungs and their very souls....

...Now their only hope is survival against the ash weaving chaotic onslaught that is cast around them by the ash being....

Now the Ash Dasher sprints effortlessy through the darkest of nights, past the forested woodlands and the mountain glaciers, back into the daylight,

...back into another dawning day of bloodshed and ash.

...But for now, it's waits quietly under an age old layer of dust ready to tear across Tamriel's plains once again in a whirlwind cloak of death and destruction.

    ***

Race: Dark Elf. Their Ancestor's Wrath ability is great for this build, especially being melee, and this race is a good aesthetic fit for the ash side of the build, with their..well, whole bodily ash pigmentation!; and the race's serious and dry sense of personality and humour - especially some of the ones in Solstheim! (dry - ash; Geddit? ...no? nevermind, I'll move on...).

Guardian Stone: The Steed Stone. Everything that isn't ash-related in this build is speedy instead. (Keep that in mind). I was also mostly sick of being encumbered all the time, and this stone adds 100 extra carry-weight, which is like being able to slug about an extra 11 copies of Legate Rikke's armor, or 9 extra orcish warhammers, and nobody can deny that isn't a massive thumbs up to any Skyrim junk hoarders either! ;)

Plus, no matter if you have the heaviest armor in the entire game as this stone allows your armor to weigh absolutely nothing!

    __________

Black Book Abilities (2): Mora's Boon. Allows you to regain your total Health, Magicka and Stamina; Useful for narrowingly escape from any iminent or mid-battle danger or fatality completely unharmed, or regaining every attribute in the blink of an eye in the middle of a battle, instead of downing ten of every various potion you have in your inventory haphazardly in a flapping panic in the hope that one of them will actually help you. Anyway, this ability is gained from the Hidden Twilight Black Book.

Your second Black Book Ability is 'The Secret of Protection', it allows you to take half damage from anything attacking you for 30 in-game seconds. Useful for standing your ground in a fight without geting smacked about twice as much. It is gained from the Black Book 'Filiament and Filigree'.

Shouts Known: Whirlwind Sprint, Elemental Fury, Slow Time.

Major Skills: One-Handed, Alteration, Conjuration, Heavy Armor

    Minor Skills: Two-Handed, Destruction, Alchemy.

One-Handed will obviously be for your weapons (Soul-Render and Bloodscythe, which I especially put aside to test and try for this build, which I hadn't even so much as glanced at before-hand, I'll talk more about them later!). Alteration will be for the Ash Alteration spells that is included within this build such as Ash Rune and Ash Shell.

Heavy Armor is perked and used to make the most out of your defense, other than your speed. Heavy Armor was a better fit than Light Armor as the only drawback is the movement speed; But since that is done awy with by The Steed Stone, it makes it a superior choice.

Conjuration will be used for the same purpose but different spells such as Conjure Ash Guardian and Conjure Ash Spawn.

An ash spawn, weird melting-bogey looking creatures....urrgh. *shudders*

Two-Handed will be utilized for your secondary weapon, the Longhammer, which is the fastest two-handed weapon in the entire game, and coupled with Elemental Fury can vanquish anything in it's sight off the face of Nirn within the bat of an eyelid (And that in no way is an exaggeration, it's practically an understatement, ...seriously).

Destruction will be sparely used but will be solely for the purpose of Whirlwind Cloak Destruction spell, whisping away any enemies when cast, also bloody hilarious to clear a narrow dungeon walkway in seconds when you use the Whirlwind Sprint with it, and garunteed you'll die laughing when using the two together when facing a horde of Rieklings!

Alchemy I listed as a minor skill as I wanted to dabble in and try out some new potions and posions from the new Dragonborn DLC ingredients, which I hadn't so before this build, for example the netch jelly, and finally a use for all the scathecraw I keep picking up by complete impulse...

Bloodscythe and/or Soulrender slathered with Netch Jelly Paralysis Poison anyone? No takers? Exactly. Excellent fit....On with Spells!...

Spells Known: Whirlwind Cloak, Conjure Ash Guardian, Conjure Ash Spawn, Ash Rune, Ash Shell.

The Ash Guardian and Ash Spawn are shown below to show players how to distinguish between the two when either fighting or casting them.

An Ash Guardian (above). My favourite of all the possible conjurations.

An Ash Spawn (above) The ugliest of all possible conjurations.

    Endgame Equipment/Resources & Enchants:-

'Ashen Coiffure of the Aqueous' - Ebony Helmet (Water-Breathing)

'Dusted Mail of the Conjurer' -  Daedric Armor (Fortify Conjuration by +%)

'Cindered Gauntlets of the Warlord' - Ebony Gauntlets (Fortify One-Handed by +%)

'Ash-Laiden Stompers of the Vigorous' - Ebony Boots (Fortify Stamina Regeneration by +%)

    Bloodscythe & Soulrender

    The Longhammer

    Early/Midgame Equipment & Resources w/ Enchants:-

    Apprentice Hood (+40 Magicka)

Ancient Nordic Armor of Major Conjuring (Fortify Conjuration by 25%)

Orcish Gauntlets of Major Wielding (Fortify One-Handed by 25%)

Orcish Boots of Recuperation (Fortify Stamina Regeneration Rate by 20%)

Ancient Nordic Sword of Winnowing (Absorb Magicka by 20 points)

Ancient Nordic Sword of Leeching (Absorb Health by 20 points)

Nordic Warhammer of Stunning (Paralyze for 2 secs.)

    Attribute Spread & Point Usage/Taking:-

    2/3/3  in  M/H/S

For example: for your first level you take Magicka, then for the next level you take magicka again (2).

For the level after that you take Health, then the two successive levels after that you take it twice more (3)

You complete the same thing again with your Stamina as you did with Health, so you end up with the 3 levels of Stamina.

You then start the same cycle from the start.

    Perks & Perk Usage:-

I chose the majority of the One-Handed perks to implement to be able to wield Bloodscythe and Soulrender with the most deadly accuracy, and alchemy to poison them; Also, remember: When you are concocting potions, value levels faster than quantity. (e.g A flawless 17 second paralysis poison might level faster than 17 weak health potions).

"Who doesn't want two fraternally attached scimitars dripping with the fatal alchemical blood of their foes, ready to tear through the now sizzling flesh of a tiny Riekling?"

Two-Handed was to maximise the potential of The Longhammer. It swings 30% than a standard warhammer, which is the same as the Ebony Blade, which, despite being a two-handed weapon, swings to the speed of a one-handed weapon. Go figure; It's badass.

Alteration, Conjuration and Destruction are for your Whirlwind Cloak, Ash and Summoning Ash-Being spells, (Ash Guardian and Ash Spawn).

I chose to outfit this character in Heavy Armor as, well....why the hell not?; It weighs absolutely nothing! max defense = max movement speed, why not use heavy armor?

The perks are useful to the build for AR bonuses etc. except Matching Set, because you ....don't have a matching set. I used the mixed set of Daedric/Ebony armor to create a cool, powerful look that fits with the image I had in mind that I used for the first picture.

    Battle Tactics:

A typical battle is never played out by sneaking. You should never feel afraid or weaker than your enemy no matter the size at any level playing throughout this build.

You rush in after casting your Whirlwind Cloak spell and quickly and unrelentlessy circle your foe, throwing down ash spells and conjuring your Guardians and Spawn throughout the battle; After your magicka has been deplenished, whilst still circling your now ash covered opponent/s, draw Bloodscythe and Soulrender quickly and graciously from their sheaths (or The Longhammer for tougher and quicker opponents) and now then utilize your Elemental Fury and Ancestor's Wrath racial ability (recommended optionally after poisoning your weapon with the strongest poison you may have) and then quickly use a flurry of power attacks (made easier and more deadly by the inclusion of Dual Flurry and Dual Savagery) to quickly take down you foes.

Keep switching and circling around after a few power attacks and attack a different enemy if you are pitted against more than one. Your undeniable and overpowering haste and conjured help will help you gain the edge.

To maximise all these options fully:

    • Keep light on your toes,
    • Don't stop circling or moving for more than a couple of seconds,
    • Try and attain your endgame weapons quickly, quicker the better,
    • Keep practising Alchemy and collecting better and rarer ingredients,
    • Remember to use your Elemental Fury Shout/Whirlwind Cloak spells/shouts and your Ancestor's Wrath ability.
    • Don't disregard your conjuration skills and spells, they may give you the edge to win the battle.

    Recommended Quests & Dungeon Delves:-

    Gyldenhul Hall (Solstheim) {For Bloodscythe & Soulrender}

    Liar's Retreat (The Longhammer)

Inner Sanctum (Forgotten Vale, Shrine of Radiance) - There is a dis-enchantable circlet of Water-Breathing in the hands of a frozen Falmer, that you can learn the enchantment from and enchant your Ebony Helmet with it.

Tel Mithryn/Neloth's Quests - Your complete set of spells.

Looking good! My reading budget has been spent for the day but I'll come straight back to this tomorrow!

Ash Spawn really are mingers! It's their rapid breathing that freaks me out, sounds like their rutting a pig...

Nice one Olaf! +1 Just a question don't the ash spells make the enemies immune to damage?

The Ash Shell spell is to give you a chance to conjure anything, not to attack it.

It's like a poor man's version of paralyze in a sense

Ah, OK  Just to buy time to cast spells  I think you should add Tel Mythryn quests in recommended quests section - after all you get all your spells from those quests

Great buid Olaf, +1! But why take Expert and Impact in Destruction if you are using Destruction solely for whirlwind cloak? And how come you didn't perk Conjuration?

I accidently perked Alteration instead of Conjuration, it'll be fixed by tommorrow.

Expert Destruction is needed to cast Whirlwind Cloak.

Finally someone used my idea of whirlwind sprint and cloak, i called it bowling for draugr but i never thought about rieklings...those ewoks would be a pleasure to torment!
  • April 2, 2013

How did you get this to work James? I tested that combo a few months ago on a previous build and it didn't seem to work how I wanted it to. The cloak only ever took effect when whirlwind sprint stopped. If I whizzed past someone, it had no effect.
