Hlaalu, Redoran or Telvanni?

  • August 24, 2015

It always bummed me that the closest you come to joining House Indoril was joining the Temple and doing a few quests for the Ordinators.

Isn´t that because House Indoril doesn´t havy any territorial holdings on Vvardenfell? So pretty much only Ordinators are closest thing to House Indoril on the island. Also, my understanding is that House Indoril was really weakened by the expansion of Imperial rule, because they were conservatives and Hlaalu took advantage of that.

This is all true but I still feel like there could have been a way to tie in like joining the Ordinators proper or something.

You got me, I love all of (and anything from) Morrowind. Even Cliff Racers!

Before proceeding, I'd like to endorse the comparison between Dunmeri culture and Japanese culture, stating that this similarity is definitely one of the biggest reasons that I have the Dunmers as my favourite race. I absolutely love Japan, its history (especially up until the end of the Meiji restoration) and its culture.

Anyway, my favourite House is a tie between the Redoran, the Telvanni and House Indoril. So let's see what I like in each one of them:

House Redoran: The defenders of Morrowind. That alone is enough reason for me to hold them in high esteem, for they are the protectors of the Dunmer's home. It's also always good to remember everyone that the Redoran army alone stopped the Argonian's incursions into Dunmeri territory. and that the House was essential in the rebuilding and supporting of Morrowind and its people. Last but not least: Honor.

"A Redoran must show piety to the Aedra and Daedra, our creators and ancestors. For without the divine, we would not have the chance to serve. And without divine law, we would not know right from wrong. And without giving thanks for these things, we would forget our place and our purpose."

House Telvanni: They're unique, interesting and their architecture and techniques are astounding, as are its members. They have some of the best mages in Tamriel, and yet they are isolationists. I partially agree when people say that they want power, but I'm not sure about why they want it and tend to consider that this desire for knowledge and power is not with the intention of enforcing it on everyone else; it is instead something to feed their ego and curiosity.

House Indoril: This line alone sumarizes it: "By contrast, many Indoril nobles chose to commit suicide rather than submit to the Empire, with the result that the House was significantly weakened during the period of transition..."

And in the same book, "On Morrowind", the reason why I dislike the Hlaalu:

"Initially, though the Imperial legions and navy were widely considered undefeatable, House Indoril and the Temple hierarchy proposed to resist to the death. Redoran and Dres stood by Indoril, with Telvanni remaining neutral. Hlaalu proposed accommodation."

"House Hlaalu, whose influence and power was waxing with its enthusiastic accommodation with the Empire"

     Jerks...

None of them because all of them turned their backs against the Great House of Indoril to be bootlickers to the Imperial Swine known commonly as the Empire.

What I appreciate the most about this House is how they stick to their guns and wish to preserve their cultural identity. Another cool thing is that the Nerevar came from this House. Half the time I play Skyrim as a Dunmer I can't help but want to name my character Something Nerevar.

That´s one awesome response here. Should be a Lore discussion of it´s own.

I never saw whole Dunmer nation similar to Japan, only Redoran and that´s why I never joined them, even when I respect their honor and duty. I just don´t like Japan, samurais and ninjas.

I think you´ve nailed it regarding the Telvanni. While they are power hungry, it´s not hunger for power over other beings. It is just ego and curiosity, mostly for the sake of scientific research and knowledge.

Regarding the Indoril...I just can´t relate myself to religious fanatics. Ordinators gave me this impression, and because Ordinators are mostly recruited from Indoril...you can guess where I´m heading with that.

And Hlaalu...sure, jerks. But realist jerks.

Your opinion is really similar to opinions of Dunmer from Morrowind. They really dislike these foreigners and their Emperor that rules them from distance. But on the other hand, most of the Dunmer never felt the difference when Empire made Morrowind it´s province. It might be a province, but the country is still ruled by it´s own goverment, they still have their traditions and Tribunal is still in charge. (During the game)

Only thing that changed was increased trade, more exotic goods and other stuff from other provinces. Sure, this way the Hlaalu got to power, but I believe there was mutual benefits for both Morrowind and Empire.

Vivec organised Morrowinds inclusion in to the Empire because he knew that was the only way to get the Nerevarine in to the country.

  • August 25, 2015

That´s interesting. I´ve never heard that before.

So even Vivec saw it as rational decision.

  • August 25, 2015

Well this is how I interpret it because It's made pretty clear in different Morrowind books that Vivec  even before he was a god was clairvoyant and could see if not understand future events.

In the 36 Lessons he pretty much lays out the entire plot of the game and how it must end. So the way I see it as all a long con by Vivec who manipulates everything so it turns out this way so he can continue to change Dunmer society to prepare them for the future.

Everybody was shocked that Vivec agreed to have Morrowind join the empire because most thought that Morrowind would win a war. Cut to a few hundred years later and a mysterious prisoner born on a certain day to uncertain parents arrives in Vvardenfell for reasons unknown. This would never have happened and none of the events would have took place if Vivec had not decided to join the empire.
