The thing that bugs me is the way Illusion is set up. Illusion should be Phantasmal walls or Phantom summons and decoys. the should do something like a charm school or Manipulation school instead. But maybe thats just D&D talking out of me ^^

As someone who loves D&D magic I completely agree! But in order for me to not get annoyed with the game, I choose to see it as more of an opportunity than a failure. It gives me the challenge of creating a new type of magic using very limited tools and as much justification as I can muster. Granted, trying to roleplay something that aesthetically don't work (ie I tried to use a Battleaxe for a trident... didn't work very well) is one of the toughest things to get past while roleplaying, but I still enjoy it. Its something different after all.

Getting ingredients from Arcadia and no one else because she's got the best Nirnroot around (Phil I swear to god if you make a euphemism about this :P) is right up their alley, and makes them so fun to roleplay.

Arcadia keeps her best Nirnroot up her alley? Perhaps she likes the way it thrums when she's plucking.

To be fair, the game actually gives them their own innuendo. Arcadia was the first alchemist I heard say, "So, you're interested in my potions... and ingredients?" Just the way it is delivered hints at a sly smile and a raised eyebrow. Now it's worse because I'll be listening for that muffled, vibrating sound of a Nirnroot shrouded by troll fat-stained clothing. That's why she leans against that counter: She can no longer stand up straight.

I always pegged it as her trying to flog her merch any way she could. But maybe thats because I've always kinda hated Arcadia - 'No I'm not sick, stop trying to sell me shit' basically. If I'm playing an alchemist sometimes I'll roleplay that she's actually making potions dangerously or using illegal ingredients or something, just so I have an excuse to not go there.

My elementalist's tap is turned on by knowledge gifted by the spirits of Nirn itself (my interpretation of the Earthbones) and ancient Words of Stone, as she follows the flow of waters and passages of snow and stone, not  head knowledge gained by the few spell books she has found so far.

Bathing in Alduin's fire immediately opened up the full fire branch as she finds the spell books. Icebite: killing and "tasting" her first ice wraith in their venturing through Bonechill Passage, Steadfast Ward as they make their way down the rocks of Darkwater falls and through the Pass, Kynes Peace after retrieving the Gildergreen sapling. (After unlocking the three Kynes' shouts I will try and join the Spriggan faction which includes wild beasts)

At Level 25 hers is a slow journey, (keeping pace with her walking speed !). I have hopes of a late flowering.

This is an awesome idea, Mook! Tying learning directly to her experience's with Nirn is a really original way to go about magic in general, and gives a new meaning to nature and magic. Might have to steal this for my next Druidy playthrough!

I love this, Mook! I agree with Zonnonn. This would be great for a druid playthrough. I might also use this method for a future druid character. :)

I had posted this recently in a discussion regarding magic in the Role Play Help thread (copied/pasted from there):

I've done this in a recent playthrough:

Whenever my character learns spells, she first needs to take the spell tome to a court wizard or mage where they’ll teach her the ‘spells’ aspect of the spell. She won't read the spell book at this time. Instead she takes it to someone who’s associated with the type of spell she’s trying to learn where they’ll teach her the ‘practical’ aspect of the spell. At that point she’ll read the spell book and cast the spell.

For example, when she learned the healing spell she first talked to Farengar (talking to him via in-game dialogue but rp’ing they discussed the spell book). She then took the spell book and talked to Danica (again in-game dialogue with rp discussion). At that point she read the book and cast the healing spell, roleplaying that she practiced the spell under the watchful eye of Danica.

She did this again when she discovered the transmute spell in Halted Stream Camp, not reading it immediately in the dungeon but taking it with her to Whiterun, where again she talked to Farengar. This time she took the spell book to Adrianne and read it after talking with her. She then was able to cast the transmute spell and used it to craft several pieces of jewelry. Additionally, she'll only use the transmute spell alongside a smelter or forge and not mid-dungeon or while she’s out wandering around.

I did something like this once with falion ^^

Every Morndas to Fredas from 1 pm till 7 pm i had lessons with Falion about Conjuration and if affordable i would buy a training lesson. Loredas and Sundas were mostly used for Practical Traning like Raiding a Bandir camp, Scavenging a crypt or hunting with spells ^^ After hitting Adept in Conjuration Falion reluctantly send me to the College for a more well rounded Education and so i have acces to all the Books in the Arcaneum. ^^
