I don't think so, as dead thrall only works on humanoids. You could get semi-permanent zombies with alchemy though, or just keep casting the staff. Another thing pointed out in the comments of that thread is that you could use the ritual stone.

Man, I love the concept for this one!
I've been impressed with the LOTR builds for this event so far.
This is a great example of a compelling support build, and combining Restoration, Illusion, and Alchemy to help keep your followers piling on the damage is awesome.
And there's Barbas! I've played a couple builds with Barbas as a permanent follower... I like that dog--a lot! ;D

It is an option. We opted to go with the Skaal set lategame for the aesthetics that really fit the character. Before we acquired the Skaal set, you'll most likely be running around in robes, thus the perks in Mage Armor
