For whichever side you take (the stuff in the chests if you follow Hadvar, or the dead Stormcloak's gear if you follow Ralof). Good to know it can be avoided!

yes it will. if you go with Hadvar you just have to pull the chain to open the door, and with Ralof you can search the dead guy but not take his gear. Hope I helped!

Well, I have to confess in the *very* early part of the playthrough, I ended up looting some arrows from the draugr in Bleak Falls. I had gone straight from Helgen to Riverwood to BFB, and simply hadn't geared up properly (the quickest way would have been to go to Whiterun for easy smelter access, do a couple jobs, buy ore, smelt it, chop wood, make arrows) - but I wanted to see if the character had 'legs' first, and was impatient.
So that is my secret shame. *But* - that was it. Nothing - and I mean nothing! - else was looted from that point on.
Probably the hardest thing to pass up was the aetherium pieces. I love that quest and the ghost chick who helps you out is probably my favorite 'companion' NPC in the game. But after I fought all the way to the bottom of Arkngthamz, with Zephyr in my hand, and stood in the treasure chamber looking at the radiant blue shard.... I knew I couldn't pick it up. That was kind of tough.
Also, dragon bones. For some reason, that was difficult. I guess I always pick up those damn things. It seemed almost wrong not to!
