Hidden Gem spotlight: Story Corner Edition

Welcome to the new story corner edition of the hidden gem spotlights.

Let’s start simple, what is this all about? I assume you’ve seen or at least heard of the hidden gem spotlight for the character build group. Well, earlier this year Dragonborn declared that he and the hidden gem team would like to see the format spread its wings and cover some of the other groups. I volunteered and here we are. However, a different group means a different approach.

First of all, the story corner’s core functioning is completely different from that of the character building group; we function on a pack hierarchy and drunken cannibal hippies, or utter chaos if you prefer. The CB group is driven by a healthy amount of competition and a ranking system that allows people to find builds that fit their tastes and possess a certain quality. This ranking system however has its shortcomings and this is where the hidden gem spotlight comes into play. It allowed for underappreciated builds to rise to the top even after they had been lost in the flows of time.

Not only does the story corner not have such a ranking system and let’s be honest we would probably hunt down the host that would install such a thing with pitchforks and torches, oh and silver blades in case of werewolves; the story corner does not have as big a scale as the CB group either. If a blog post of ours would ever reach the fabled legendary status from the CB group, we might as well all go home and send that writer to an editor.

In short it becomes very difficult to decide what a “Hidden” gem would be in our little community. Sure I could delve into the archives every few weeks and see what I dig up, and while I certainly intend to do so, I would like to honour some of the still active writers as well. This is where we reach a dilemma as most stories that have some degree of quality will tend to have a following of somewhere between 6 to 10 people at least. And this can be considered the norm for most story corner related affairs, so what would be considered as hidden?

    I wouldn’t have a clue.

So instead of painstakingly trying to find out what would qualify we’ll just be having a look at the not specifically hidden gems. Sometimes that will be long stories, sometimes short stories, and sometimes poems (don’t expect a lot of those, I suck at evaluating poetry), and in some cases all three.  Let’s start shall we?

Damn, Teineeva in tha house!  Looking great, mate. I´m interested what you´ll do with these for Story Corner.

Btw, you know what stories you have to spotlight the next time right? *hands money under the table*

I think this is pretty brilliant, Tein. It's a great opportunity to give browsing readers an idea of what stories they might enjoy reading. I love the way you write the summaries. There's another bonus, too; I'm sure you can get a tonne of help with this sort of thing. It's quite easy to gush about a story you really enjoy reading, after all.  Other people around here can write about the stories which you haven't read, so it won't be solely up to you to gather the material.

Because on that note, someone will have to write about your stories as well...

Loving this idea, I'd love to see a few stories come out of the woodwork. I am still so terribly behind on everyone's writings (but I'm getting to it, I swear!), but I definitely enjoy reading the content we have here on the site. Even if I can't always get to it right when I want to.

Well as I'm the only one in the HGS SCE team I won't be covering any of my own stuff anytime soon, but well if there is popular request I might change my mind about that .

And yeah I think I'll be finding a lot of my stuff by just loitering about the community. For one I intend to put all those "blogs I am reading" lists to use. Although to be honest I've already got the second edition candidates noted down.

    BAD ORC, BAD!

Well, I will use this as a chance to ask if anyone would be willing to help Teineeva run the SC version of the HGS. Not only would it help feature more content, but I know it'll help make them more frequent, I know Teineeva doesn't have the time to write these up weekly, so it'd be awesome if we could nab someone else to cover weeks he can't.

I'm a little hesitant about getting myself into an obligation I won't be able to handle, but I think I can sign up for this.  You can put my name on The List.
