She is a woman of many names: Vampire of the Dawn, the Dovahkiin, Dragonslayer of the Blades and – if the hushed rumours are true – Listener of the Dark Brotherhood. However, of all her titles, there’s only one she truly cares about...

She is the Sniper of Tamriel, the greatest marksman of the Fourth Era. For the right price she provides death at a distance – always from miles away, with silent efficiency, and with a crossbow bolt through the heart.

I’m not a huge fan of close-up assassin builds, it seems like too much risk for a cautious killer to get up so close and personal. With this in mind, I wanted to make a pure ranged damage sniper build.

Ordinarily I don’t like high damage builds as they make the gameplay a little easy for my tastes, but kind of the point of snipers in any game is to maximise ranged damage, so I ran with it. Feel free to remove a lot of the damage dealing features, as they’re huge overkill (I one-shotted Alduin and the Ebony Warrior on Legendary without stealth), but it wouldn’t be a damage dealing build without them.

In terms of a weapon there are two possibilities: a dragonbone bow and a dwarven enhanced crossbow. Contrary to what you may read elsewhere dwarven enhanced crossbows do slightly more single shot damage than dragonbone bows, at the cost of a moderate amount of DPS. Therefore, the crossbow was the ideal weapon for this build.

As I’m sure many of you will know, being a Necromage vampire is vital for any damage focussed build due to it allowing you to make stronger damage enchantments as well as boosting the effects of those enchantments while they’re equipped. From here we now have a couple of interesting features – they need to be a vampire, but they also need to be a member of the Dawnguard to obtain a crossbow. This allowed for a build that was fairly unique from both a roleplaying and gameplay perspective, which I’ll get into more detail on below.

Mods: None. Completed on Legendary difficulty on the PS4 Special Edition.

Race: Orc. To optimise damage Berserker Rage is really the only way to go. Taking half damage also fits with the cautious assassin archetype.

Gender: Female. Most enemies in the game are male, making Agent of Dibella more effective.

Attributes: Magicka : Health : Stamina - 0:7:1. The build uses minimal spellcasting, so Magicka isn’t really needed, and it doesn’t do a great deal of running around so only a little Stamina is required for crossbow zooming.

Stone: Lord. For the magic resistance.

Blessing: Auriel. Auri-El’s blessing (or Auriel as it is on the shrine) increases bow damage, and so is a must. While Auri-El is reported to disdain both vampires and orcs, it seems he appreciates the Sniper’s pure dedication to her art and grants her his blessing.

    Shouts: Aura Whisper, Unrelenting Force.

Spells: Whirlwind Cloak, Fast Healing as needed.

Additional Powers/Abilities: Agent of Mara, Agent of Dibella, Lover’s Insight, Secret of Strength, Seeker of Might.

† Steady Hand should be taken before becoming a Necromage vampire.

    * These perks should be taken after becoming a Necromage vampire.

The spread I’ve laid out is for 55 perks (level 56), there wasn’t any more I felt I could easily shave off and keep it true to concept.

A big part of this build is producing their signature crossbow the Golden Thunder, with Chaos and Shock enchantments. Therefore, crafting skills to produce the optimised crafting loop (Ahzidal’s Genius and Seeker of Sorcery to produce better Fortify Alchemy gear, Seeker of Shadows and said gear to produce better Fortify Enchanting potions) were a must. The Augmented Destruction perks further increase the strength of your weapon enchantments.

The rest of the perks are there to maximise your damage output, to keep you stealthy, and to give you a measure of armor and healing. Both Wind Walker and Recovery provide Stamina and Magicka recovery when you’re under the sun as a vampire.

Additional perk suggestions: Additional perks I would advise, but are by no means necessary, are the remaining Archery perks. While the crossbow is considered instantaneous, there is an animation where you swing it in front of you before you take the shot. With Ranger you can sneak around at good walking pace with your weapon ready to fire, and can truly fire it at a moment’s notice.

Dual casting for Destruction is quite fun for dual cast Whirlwind Cloaks. These cloaks help mitigate damage when you’re swarmed. Evasion can be used to this end also. Lastly Avoid Death and Magic Resistance from the Restoration and Alteration trees respectively, both which should be taken after Necromage, can give you more survivability.

    Sniper’s Sight – Torturer’s Hood – Fortify Archery (64%) + Fortify Destruction (39%)

    Sniper’s Finesse – Leather Armor – Fortify Stamina (99 pts) + Fortify Destruction (39%)

    Sniper’s Surety – Leather Bracers – Fortify Archery (64%) + Fortify Magicka (99pts)

    Sniper’s Agility – Leather Boots – Fortify Stamina (99 pts) + Fortify Sneak (64%)

    Sniper’s Precision – Gold Diamond Ring – Fortify Archery (64%) + Fortify Destruction (39%)

    Sniper’s Lethality – Gold Diamond Necklace – Fortify Archery (64%) + Healing Rate (49%)

The goal of the equipment is simple, to maximise archery damage and prevent a need for weapon recharging with Fortify Destruction. The latter was desirable to make the sniper feel always prepared. Fortify Magicka and Stamina gives you a little of each to play with, useful when you’re a vampire to offset the sunlight penalty. Healing Rate means that, with Recovery and Wind Walker, all your attributes recover in sunlight. Fortify Sneak is there to offset the lack of investment in Stealth.

It’s worth noting that the Torturer’s Hood cannot be improved through smithing, but still counts towards perks like Wind Walker. This is not an issue as you hit the 567 armor cap with ease using the stated perks and by improving the other pieces of armor. To obtain the hood itself, follow Ralof during Unbound and take if off the Imperial Torturer's corpse or hope to get lucky and be attacked by a thief in the wilderness.

Crafting gear: Gold and Emerald Circlet – Fortify Alchemy (39%)

Dunmer Shoes, Blacksmith’s Apron – Fortify Smithing (39%)

Thalmor Gloves, Gold Diamond Ring, Gold Diamond Necklace – Fortify Alchemy (39%) + Fortify Smithing (39%)

Crafting equipment is simply a means to an end for the Sniper, and as such the gear isn't worthy of a name. Dunmer Shoes can be obtained during Served Cold off Mirri Severin and can be enchantment using enchantments ordinarily for chest armor. Thalmor gloves are nice, as they don’t clip with a lot of clothing items.

Potions and poisons are prepared using the Fortify Alchemy gear and Seeker of Shadows while being a Necromage vampire.

Sharp Eyes, Still Hands (any two Fortify Marksman ingredients) – Fortify Marksman 195%. Sharp Eyes, Still Hands pushes the Sniper’s damage to extreme levels, allowing her to dispatch foes with ease.

Liquid Lightning (Giant Lichen, Void Salts, Deathbell) – Shock Weakness 146%, Poison Weakness 97%, 146 Poison damage. While the Golden Thunder crossbow is already capable of killing most enemies in a single shot, when the Sniper kisses her bolts with Liquid Lightning it is rumoured her enemies die in far greater agony.

Smithing potions (any two smithing ingredients) – Fortify Smithing 195%.

Enchanting potions (any two enchanting ingredients) – Fortify Enchanting 49%.

The Golden Thunder – Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow – 152 physical damage, 165 Shock damage, 50% chance of 263 elemental Chaos damage. The Golden Thunder is the Sniper’s magnum opus, a masterwork at facilitating execution at considerable distance. Compared to ordinary bows, the Golden Thunder bypasses a great amount of enemy armor, meaning that even the most protected of foes are not safe from its piercing potency. The force of the crossbow itself is said to feel like a blow from a giant, staggering enemies who survive a first shot.

Damage and DPS calculations: For those of you who are interested, I thought I would quickly lay out the damage of the Golden Thunder. 152 physical damage is that with 15 Archery and no perks invested, crafted using the five pieces of Fortify Smithing gear and a Fortify Smithing potion.

With 100 Archery and 5/5 Overdraw, plus a Dwarvern Bolt, this becomes 439. Seeker of Might adds 10% damage, raising this to 482. Auriel’s Blessing is effected by being a Necromage vampire, and adds another 12% for 540 damage. Four pieces of Fortify Archery gear provide an 80% increase each (64% x 1.25 for Necromage vampire). Some combination of the effects (possibly Seeker of Might) further increase this to around a 377% increase, making the Golden Thunder dish out 2038 damage. With a +195% Fortify Marksman potion providing a 243% bonus, you now have 7005 damage. Last but not least, Berserker Rage gives an extra 100% damage, to provide:

With a sneak attack this is tripled to 42030. Adding back the elemental damage (+15 from an exploding bolt, +165 from the Shock enchantment, +394 on average for the Chaos enchantment) and you get 42604.

Contrasting this to a Dragonbone Bow with Dragonbone Arrows, you get 1995 damage with the combination of maxed Archery and Overdraw, Auriel’s Blessing, the previously mentioned gear and Seeker of Might. With the Fortify Marksman Potion this becomes 6945. With Berserker Rage this becomes 13890. Sneak attack is 41670. Elemental damage is +165 Shock, +394 on average for Chaos, for 42229 maximum damage overall.

In terms of DPS, I timed over 10 seconds and got 8 shots in that time with a Dragonbone Bow and 5 shots with an Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow, having both weapons cocked when I started timing (Necromage vampire Quick Shot reduces the crossbow reload animation to about a second). This means the crossbow has approximately 2/3s the DPS of the bow, but this is hardly bad, particularly given the increased shot velocity of the crossbow which I find makes it easier for the bolts to connect.

Death Incarnate – Sniper’s gear + Berserker Rage + Sharp Eyes, Still Hands + Deadly Aim + Auriel’s Blessing + Seeker of Might

With her innate orcish fury, her signature fortifying pieces of armor and potions, her blessing from Auri-El and the secrets she has learnt from Hermaeus Mora, it is said the Sniper of Tamriel could kill the gods themselves were they to manifest on Nirn.

The Stalkers’ Sense  Aura Whisper + Quiet Casting.

While the spells Detect Life and Detect Dead allow for awareness of most enemies, both spells must be actively cast and do not allow for detection of automata or daedra. With Aura Whisper and Quiet Casting, the Sniper activates Stalkers' Sense, making her identify her target in moments, keeping her alert to danger and leaving her hands free for Golden Thunder.

The Tireless Sniper – Secret of Strength + Steady Hand

By activating Secret of Strength, the Sniper can take careful aim at her targets without any stamina cost.

Rush of Wind – Whirlwind Cloak + Unrelenting Force

Just as her crossbow bolts tear through the air, at times of need the Sniper can call upon the wind to protect her, scattering her enemies so she can dispatch them with a flurry of crossbow bolts.

The gameplay is simple: (1) sneak, (2) shoot people with a crossbow. The Sniper is a specialist at ranged combat, and this narrow focus is therefore reflected in the simplistic but highly effective playstyle. While people say that crossbows are loud, I never had any issue using them as a stealth weapon. Melee weapon use should also be kept to an absolute minimum during play - you're a sniper, so snipe!

Stalkers' Sense means that you are never really caught off-guard. In a dungeon Aura Whisper lets you know when an enemy is rounding a corner, and in the open it serves as a spotter for your sniper. Rush of Wind with Berserker’s Rage is useful when you’re being swarmed, which is the only real time the Sniper is in danger. Whirlwind Cloak is enhanced by Necromage vampire, providing a greater chance of knockdown, and making it difficult for melee enemies to reach you.

In terms of personal gameplay, I always play on Legendary, and I never use potions to heal or save during combat. I also avoid magic absorption, opting for resistance instead. Feel free to adopt this approach if you feel like it.

Factions: Dawnguard, Blades, Dark Brotherhood, Civil War faction of choice.

The Sniper has really only three priorities: to make one of the best ranged weapons ever seen, to hone her skills as a marksman without equal, and to assassinate Tamriel’s most lethal men, mer and monsters. She sides with the Dawnguard, not so much because she hates vampires, but because she is captivated with the idea of being responsible for ending the Volkihar line, plus it provides access to the elite weaponry she craves. Similarly she sides with the Blades because they hunt dragons, with each one she slays adding to her own legend.

When the Sniper has eliminated the Volkihar, she petitions Serena to become a vampire herself, honing her stealth abilities to a razor edge. Upon taking control of the Dark Brotherhood, the Sniper of Tamriel is poised to renew the Volkihar bloodline under the faction’s dark tutelage. With her progeny trained by her own hand, Skyrim and beyond will be plunged into darkness, with no one safe from the Brotherhood’s acolytes.

The Sniper eschews the other factions of Skyrim. The College requires too much of her time that she could be using to become a better assassin. She despises the Companions and their so-called honour. They claim to be warriors, yet spend their time drinking, exterminating lowly beasts, and intimidating wretches like Nazeem. The Sniper disdains thievery as a waste of time, why scrabble around in the dirt desperately trying to pinch a septim when you can earn a fatter purse as an assassin for hire? True hunters and killers are the only people with which the Sniper feels at home.

So that was my first and (probably last) build, I hope you enjoyed! Any advice or criticism is appreciated. Apologies if extremely similar builds have been completed before, but with a quick search I couldn’t find any vampire builds where they used the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow. Discuss, and like if you think it’s worthy!

I liked because this build is definatly worthy, whether i think it or not ;P

Thanks! It is a bit of a cheesy high damage build, but who doesn't enjoy one of them from time to time.

Couldn't agree more! Sometimes I just want to shoot bad guys and not worry about the intricasies of balance and fairness in gameplay. This build is really solid mate, a corker of a first. The RP (my personal favourite bit) is great and thoughtful, the gameplay is all you can ask for and the presentation is great. Hopefully there is much more to come!

Thanks very much for the praise. It took quite some time to put together so I'm at least a few people are enjoying it!

Some Overpowerness never hurt anybody. :D For some reason I was smiling while reading this probably because of how OP it is but it's nice to see a build like that from time to time like Zonnonn said; and good presentation.

    Ah, also welcome! :D

Cheers, and happy to be here! Glad you liked the presentation, I never really realised how much work goes into making these builds look even half good!

And yeah it is quite absurdly overpowered! I think when people first played the game and found out about Necromage vampire and increasing damage through the improved crafting loop with additions that came with Dragonborn, there was a bunch of people trying to make overpowered damage builds - but soon enough people thought they were cheesy and steered away from it. It is fun to sometimes go back to that and make a cheesy build, and at least with the Sniper it becomes interesting due to it having some unique story challenges of having to be a vampire and having to be a member of the DG too.

I'd say if you strip off the Fortify Archery enchantments from the gear, that would already balance the build to a fairly reasonable degree, as they pretty much quadruple the damage early on. Without the gear and with the potions and Berserker used for tough fights, I think the build would feel a lot less OP.

Not too sure what you're want instead of Fortify Archery, I guess there's a enough wiggle room to take more Illusion perks and put a slightly different spin on the character - so something like Fortify Illusion could be the way to go.

damage 13000 lol . yeah there's nothing rong with feeling like a golden god sniper in skyrim...nothing at all! nice job

  • October 17, 2017

I realised today that you could probably push the damage that little bit higher with Apple Dumplings. I might have to investigate at some point.

I know it's supposed to be a bit of a cheesy build, but it's absolutely great as a build. I think you've got everything down really well and I kinda enjoy the amount of attention that you've paid to all the details, especially the maths behind the build.

Last but not least, Berserker Rage gives an extra 200% damage, to provide:

Just looking at the math here (something I'm always rather fond of :D) and I'm curious about that extra 200% damage that you're suggesting with Berserker Rage. I mean, I'm assuming that's just a bit of an error but it doesn't give 200% extra, it gives 100% extra damage, or doubles it but an increase of 200% would triple it (because you'd have the 'base' of 100% so that doubles to 200% rather than increase it by 200%). But uhh, yeah that's minor just thought I'd mention it since you've got that attention otherwise.

I also kind of like, and it's something that can be ignored in these builds that focus on gameplay so heavily, but the character and roleplaying that you've build up in this build just makes it entirely enjoyable. That's all I think I can say, great build mate :D
