This build was inspired by some of the other well known Character Builds in the group. I'm used to playing any kind of build but once you've maxed out enchanting, smithing, or alchemy, or even both or all of them, the game gets way too easy even on master difficulty. I wanted to playing a NO CRAFT build, inspired by "The Nomad" build by NARM. With out further to do I present to you...

    GAMEPLAY

(mostly inpired from "The Chemical Chameleon" gamplay by Nikolaj Poulsen)

"You could not even concive of the power I wield...seriously"

Very early on in the game you must level your Pickpocket skill to 50 and invest a perk on "Poisoned". Craft yourself a couple of paralysis poison then proceed to Riften. Your purpose in coming to Riften is to acquire Adept level staves even early on in the game, with the help of the "Poisoned" perk and your paralysis poisons pickpocket the staves from the priestess at the shrine of Talos and the Court Wizard. Keep using your Novice/Apprentice destruction spells in conjunction with your Adept level staves early on in the game for damage while you collect sufficient amount of gold for training your Destruction skill (preferrably 5,000).

Join the "College of Winterhold" as soon as possible to be able to acquire your Conjuration Staves early on in the game, collect 3 brooms (steal 2 found in the college and 1 is already at the forge), 1 of each Fire Salt (already at the forge), Frost Salt, and Void Salt (buy them at any alchemist), 2 Orichalcum Ingot and 1 Corundom Ingot, and last is 3 Greater Soul Gem (just buy empty ones). Then immedietly head down to "The Midden", once you've dealt with the Ice Wraith head to the "Atronach Forge" and craft yourself 3 Conjuration Staves (for Flame/Frost/Storm Atronach). Once you have your Conjuration staves immidietly head to "Snapleg Cave" and obtain your "Staff of Paralysis". Also train your Destruction Skills with Faralda, then just pickpocket you gold back. Keep doing this everytime you level up until you get your Destruction skill up to 50, then do quests again to obtain your other staffs and also to collect more gold (around 20,000 this time) as you'll be needing it to train your Destruction skill form 50 to 75 to obtain your Expert level skills for staff enchanting (do not forget to pickpocket your money back as you'll need it to but unenchanted staffs). Don't worry about leveling up as you can just power level your Conjuration (casting "Soul Trap" at a dead opponent), Illusion (spamming your "Muffle" spell), and Alteration (do the quest at Treva's Watch and obtain the spell tome "Detect Life") skill very quickly. If you can, do the quest "A Night to Remember" and obtain the "Sanguine Rose", keep your staves filled with the soul gems you've collected and with the use of your "Soul Trap" spell (until you get your "Staff of Soul Trap").

Keep doing your quests (your essential quests) and also if you can, do quests which has a staff for a reward, the Daedric Quests for Wabbajack and the Skull of Corruption, and also random missions like obtaining the "Eye of Melka" or even from fighting Dragon Priests, with the use of your Adept level staves as well as your Conjuration staves this would not be too difficult (NOTE: Only deal with Dragon Priests once you have the Sanguine Rose, do not use your other summoning staff or else you'll regret it). Some staff are obtainable as quest rewards while others can be obtained as sure loot. The remaining staves are to be crafted, mainly the "Staff of the Frost Wall","Staff of Soul Trap","Staff of Expulsion", and the "Staff of Icy Spear" (I think the "Staff of Soul Trap" can be bought) at the "Staff Enchanter" (in Tel Mythrin after you've finished the quest "The Reluctant Steward") with an unenchanted staff (from Neloth) and Heart Stones (locations are here). Your final staff for obtaining is "Miraak's Staff" after you defeated him in the quest "At the Summit of Apocrypha". Collecting your staffs is very fun and essential both for gameplay (as you'll only be using staffs) and also for roleplay (your a staff master after all). And take note that your skills still level up when using the corresponding staff for the skill (i.e. Destruction Skill levels up when you keep using your Destruction wall staves).

    ROLEPLAY

A Telvanni Stafflord always has his head high above the others. He doesn't submit to anyone unless necessary but is also quiet persuasive and intimidating, may even bribe others to do his bidding. Attitude is somewhat the same as his fellow Telvanni Wizard, Neloth, only he is much more fascinated with staves and hidden knowledge. As you venture through out Skyrim and Solstheim, you keep collecting powerful staves and acquire new abilities from hidden tomes of knowledge which Neloth is too afraid to do so, and from Relics which the ancient Nords worship as the All-maker. The big difference between you and Neloth is that you a Dragonborn, which shows you more powerful than he is. He may not show it but I'm sure Neloth is jealous you being a Dragonborn. As a Telvanni Wizard you must also have an Apprentice to pass down your knowledge, which means your apprentice must also be a member of the House Telvanni. It is no other than...Brelyna Mayron.

    FOLLOWER

Brelyna can be a handy follower as she summons Flame or Frost Atronach during combat, and also spams Apprentice level Destruction spells (as she is just an Apprentice after all). Give her an "Adept Robes of Destruction" and an "Adept Hood" for appearnace and added combat boost. Because of her being a female (unlike Talvas) she has a very low health pool, which means she cannot take much damage before she actually run away from combat, and sometimes she can accidentally attack one of your or her summon which may end up in them fighting each other which can be annoying sometimes. Just be sure to give her enchanted Destruction staves as she uses them quiet efficently (just be sure to check her inventory from time to time to refill the staves).

    STAFF PREFERENCE

    Conjuration Staves:
Staff of the Flame Atronach (Atronach Forge) - For support damage against Dragons and Draugrs.

    Alteration Staff:
Staff of Paralysis (Snapleg Cave) - For immobilizing enemies and for staff combos

    Quest Staves:
Sanguine Rose (Daedric Quest :A Night to Remember) - For support against Dragon Priests and Bosses
Miraak's Staff (Quest: At the Summit of Apocrypha) - For CC and poison damage
Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson (Quest: Under Saarthal) - Effective against Dragon Priests and Mage Bosses
Staff of Magnus (Quest: The Staff of Magnus) - Effective against Dragon Priests and Mage Bosses

    Other Staf Choices:
Wabbajack (Daedric Quest: The Mind of Madness) - Just for fun
Skull of Corruption (Daedric Quest: Waking Nightmare) - I dunno...damage maybe

    STAFF COMBINATION AND COMBO

Elemental Grasp: By dual-wielding Miraak's staff and a Destruction Wall staff. Cast the staves on the enemies path as you move backwards away from him, enemies will take damage from your destruction wall and are being held in position by your poison tentacles preventing them from reaching you instantly (efficient against melee opponents).

Pre: Miraak's Staff + Staff of the Flame/Frost/Storm

Elemental Wall: The same as Elemental Grasp, only that you cast your staves on a choke point where you can funnel your enemies. Enemies will try to reach you but will be prevented by your poison tentacles as they take damage from you destruction wall (efficient against melee opponents).

Pre: Miraak's Staff + Staff of the Flame/Frost/Storm Wall

Elemental Trap: Inspired by "Special Moves" from "The Hypnotist Build" by TZ. With the help your
"Quiet Casting" perk, cast all your wall staffs first then cast Miraak's staff, lastly cast a rune spell to finish
your trap and then use your "Throw Voice" shout to lure enemies into your trap (efficient against most enemy types).

Pre: Staff of the Flame+Frost+Storm Wall + Miraak's Staff + Any rune spell

Elemental Barbeque: By Dual-wielding your Staff of Paralysis and a Destruction Wall staff. Cast your Staff of Paralysis on your left hand to immobilize your enemy as your right hand swaps from your Destruction wall staves. Keep using your paralysis staff on the enemy as you keep damaging them with your Destruction wall staves (efficient against Boss type enemies).

Pre: Staff of Paralysis + Staff of the Flame+Frost+Storm Wall

Oblivion Time Trap: The same as Elemental Trap only that you've already been detected. Cast "Mora's
Grasp" on the enemy to buy you some time to do the Elemental Trap just underneath (use Poison Rune as
your rune spell here). Then as enemy regains himself, immidietly use your "Serpent Stone" ability to
immobilize and poison the enemy, remember to keep casting your Destruction wall staves for damage (efficient against Boss type enemies).

Pre: Mora's Grasp + Staff of the Flame+Frost+Storm Wall + Serpent Stone

Elemental Bait: Inspired by "Special Moves" from "The Hypnotist Build" by TZ. Using all your Destruction wall staves and cast it all around (dual-wield two at once). Lure your enemies into your walls then cast your "Become Ethereal" shout to bait the enemies into staying within your Destruction walls (efficient against multiple enemies).

Pre: Staff of the Flame+Frost+Storm Wall + Become Ethereal Shout

Magic Disruption: Dual-wielding your Staff of Chain Lighting in your left hand and the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson or Staff of Magnus. Use your staffs to deal damage and deplete the target's magicka pool as your Staff of Chain Lighting keeps him from retaliating because the staff has the "Impact" perk in it (efficient against Dragon Priests and Boss Mage type enemies (i.e. Miraak).

Pre: Staff of Chain Lightning + Staff of Jyrick Gauldurson/Staff of Magnus

Staves do not level their corresponding skill.

The build sounds great but that minor detail should be double checked.

It does! I leveled my destruction skill up to 90 by training it with faralda then I just pickpocket my gold back. Currently my Destruction is at 96 by just using my Destruction Staves. At first I had the same thought as you do but after a while I've observed that it does level up. I would not have said it if I have not experienced it myself

Even if it does not level it still no problem as your main target is just to get to level 75 destruction which could be achieve by what I have discussed above.

  • June 22, 2013

After double checking it turns out that any magical damage that lingers, like wall spells, will level destruction.

It's the reason why burning yourself in blacksmith forges level up destruction and explains why your destruction levels up when you use the wall staves.

    So I'll give you a 1+

Good presentation, good build, and I love the Telvanni +1

This is a good homage to mage builds all around and I did want to point one thing out too. When you have spell absorption like the atronach stone it absorbs summoned creators ex. Frost/Flame/Storm Atronachs when summoned. When this happens the spell dissipates and you are refunded the cost of the spell,; however when using a staff, the soul gem value is absorbed into magicka making staves unique. I had shown this in my Celestial Warlock build which focus' on some very unique ways to use staves that have not been done before. Once again great job and I am delighted.

Character builds which utilize staves are pretty rare. And only a few appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of using staves. I'm glad that someone with the same taste as I do appreciate what I've done. Using spell absorption is very obsolete in this build as conjuring daedras will be such a waste of time and this build does not need that much magicka as your spells and summons will be covered by the different weaponry you have (your staves). I didn't want this build to be over-powered. Anyway thanks for the like and comment dude.

I really like this build. I give this a +1 for a few reasons: You've broken the mold by making staff wielding a key aspect of your build. Something few mages do. You've even made excellent use of Miraak's staff, which even fewer mages do.

Glad that you liked it. What's the use of staves in the game if no one uses them? Now that question is solved.

Wow, this build is seriously underrated. It needs more likes. I was thinking about running a staff master in my next play through; except, I wanted to add heavy armor to do some "tanking". I am glad that it will be viable. Very nice +1 from me!
