The "Nords distrust mages on the whole" is the only part of that post that you didn't completely make up. And that's Nords, not Stormcloaks. Half of the Nords are with the Empire, who you said to join.

It may been frowned upon by some nords, but their are still certain nords who are interested/use magic.

One of the earliest sets of armour we had, whilst we were still in the beginning stages of our build, was cultist armour with the diadem of the savant. Unfortunately, we quickly realised that neither of them suited out character, and moved onto other sets, eventually settling on light chitin

If you're referring to Elyssius liking the build then it's cuz it's his first build and he isn't exactly the world's biggest fan of 'reading the rules'. Nashi-jo and I have told him however, and I'm pretty sure that he has already unliked the build.
