We know they took Atmora from the Elves who previously lived there, and it's unknown whether or not those Elves are the ancestors of the Snow Elves in Skyrim. All we do know is that there are likely no Elves of any sort left in Atmora.
This suggests the early Nord mindset: kill or be killed. Remember that early Nords were very much like the Skaal in that they worshiped. However, this isn't in the Skaal sense of maintaining balance. The Nords of Atmora once worshiped dragons, and dragons believe that power is truth. By extension, early Nords would believe the same. This would explain the Nordic tendency to conquer and eliminate/enslave those they conquer. The logic is: if you aren't strong enough to beat us, you don't deserve to be treated as equals. Some extremists might extend this to mean: you don't deserve to live; which is a very "kill or be killed; eat or be eaten" perspective.
At this point in time, Nords very likely didn't have a concept ... less

Human apologists speak of the Nords desire to just expel the elves, but we see that every elf who wasnt killed was enslaved, we read nothing abbout Nords taking cities and then just expelling the inhabitants.
Also we just dont see any Snow elves in Skyrim, besides the descendents of the once who sought refuge among the Dwemer or who hid in the "hidden Valley". Nords have no elf blood in their veins (I think) so there was no intermixing with some remaining Snow elves that were subjugated, which means that all slaves were basicly either worked to death or not alowed to have children....All the Falmer who didnt escape were thus domed....
Well at least it seems this way to me.
One particular apologist for the Nords told me that the... less

The Songs of the Return tell of Ysgramor's conquest of the Snow Elves, then his immediate conquest of the Dark Elves. Throughout the volumes is expressed a loathing for elves in general. They are described as "murderous" and "treacherous".
The Fall of the Snow Prince tells more of Ysgramor's goal to "drive the Elven scourge from Skyrim" and later Solstheim. It is not specified which elves they are intent on driving away. Just elves in general.
Frontier, Conquest describes more of the tendency for Nords to conquer and eliminate Elven settlements. less

As A loyal subject of the throne of Alinor I am duty bound to defend the honor of the dominion and of Elvenkind whenever it is questioned not only on the field of battle, but also in battles of word and wit.....
When I clash with such ignoble acusers I often hear that its Mer who have opressed and attacked mankind regulary while mankind mostly only defended itself, the outrageous liers they are dont even stop at directly falcefiying the history of their own races misdeeds and atrocitys!!!!
So hers the question: A apologist for men told me that I should find a single case in history when a human group/factian tryed to exterminate elves.
I named 2 cases: The initial nordic conquest of Skyrim and the Alessian order.
He answered that there is no proof for any whish to exterminate from Ysgramor and his folowers, rather they waged only war on the Snow elvs, they only killed thous that resisted and drove the rest out, they didnt try t... less
