Discussion: The Grimoire Challenge

  • September 4, 2018

Whew, so far so good! My Altmer seems a little more durable than my poor Nord did... :D

He survived to the College and all the way through Saarthal, although there were a couple of very tight spots where I had to resolve to running around the room like a fool to avoid being brutally murdered whilst my flame atronach took care of the threat. Edhelas is taking his sweet time, however, and won't be rushing the quests but instead helps around the College not only to learn about magic but to make some new friends and a little bit of coin on the side.

Next, he's supposed to go and find the books Orthorn stole, but a keep full of hostile mages is a rather frightening thought at such low a level... :D

    Golden Fool,

Here's what I did to reverse the Skyrim SE update (1.5.50) so I could continue to use my modded Skyrim SE with SKSE64:

How to get the old 1.5.39 .exe (for SKSE64):

    1.  Press win+R

    2.  Paste: steam://nav/console in the console to call up steam

    3.  Paste: download_depot 489830 489833 1298692161422189837 (at the bottom)

The v1.5.39 exe will download to [...]steamapps/content/app_489830/depot_489833 put it back into the Skyrim SE folder and set it to read only.

It's a temporary fix until they release an updated SKSE64 for 1.5.50.  I hope this helps!

Yeah for Mastery 1 slot for the school and 1 for Master spells that sound good. For Staffs no they dont count towards slots neither do scrolls.

I think its balanced since you either specialize in it with soul stealer bound weapons or you have to waste a slot on Soul trap. Or buy them. and they lose charges fast in the beginning. Jyrik Staff i believe has like 15 shots in it. Scrolls are mildly rare and are powerfull,

i want people to use the Magical tools. be honest how many Scrolls have you ever used in normal playthroughs. You just horde them or sell them ^^

Im kinda like an expert on Staffs since my main uses them as His primary Weapons ^^ so if you have questions let me know :D

For me, it strongly depends on the character. Those who are pure mages mostly rely on their own magicka and sometimes staves, spellsword types use more scrolls. I like diversity and narrow specializations.

    Altmer are superior)))

Fellglow keep is a lot of fun if you have high Sneak. Free the vampires from their cages and enjoy the show)) Also, all those necromancers look cool as they kill each other, and for the last one standing you can summon an atronach or raise one of their fallen friends. The only nasty one is the Caller.

Those Vampires in Fellglow will kill like 2-3 dudes on Adept. On Master they take out half the damn fort :D

Is there a way to like shepherd those vampires through the first half of fellglow keep? Usually for me they just kill the mages in the next room and leave. Honestly I was waiting until I hit 75 conjuration to attempt it. With orthorn, brelyna, and my dremora Lord I 'should' be able to survive, though if orthorn makes it through am seriously considering giving him to the caller...

Since I've enjoyed reading the updates of everyone's characters I thought I'd flesh out the adventures of my Nord mage Polvar the Quiet.

He defeated Jyrik through liberal use of Fire Atronach and the very helpful meatshield of Uthgerd, it was a very long fight with lots of loops around the room for me but Blaise (yes I name my atronachs) eventually burned him down.  The atronach was so useful in Saarthal that I decided to upgrade by crafting a Staff of the Storm Atronach in the atronach forge, all of the ingredients can be found around the college, but I'm not a thief so instead of stealing a Greater Gem from Aren I emptied the bank account and bought one instead.

With my new staff in hand, Brelyna and I headed to Fellglow Keep to retrieve some stolen books.  Galvan (my storm atronach) excels at slaying mages and fear/fury work wonders.  I was going to trade Orthorn for the books (no point in taking chances, and the guy is a traitor to the college) but The Caller attacked me anyway again Galvan was a beast wrecking the rogue mage while Brel and I focused on the Flame Atronachs.

A few side quests and then off to Mzulft as the new Thane of Winterhold.  Mzulft was scary I kept imaging being torn apart by unfeeling automatons who are immune to illusion magic.  However I made it through to the Falmer camp outside the Aedrome.  I made some noise to attract the 4 or 5 falmer then blasted them with Battle Cry making them easy picking for my squad of mages and atronachs.

Magic anomalies suck on master they nearly killed me.  I had the bright idea of using oak flesh with flame cloak to kill them since they are so hard to target, half a second later I'm fleeing for my life pounding health potions, in the end I just hid behind the ruined building and let Arniel and Faralda kill them which took forever but was much safer than my dumb idea.

Off to another draugr infested ruin in search of the Staff of Magnus.  I switched Brel for Uthgerd at Whiterun, wanted to see how she fared against a few trolls, and switched out Fear for Turn Lesser Undead, TLU was mvp spell in Labyrinthian staggering enemies while Uthgerd hacked them up.  I was most worried about the hall of Fire Ball death and the Deathlord.  I diffused the Fire Ball traps with a Mayhem Scroll the shock wave disloged all the gems, it was the best use of a scroll in my entire playthru thusfar, the Deathlord chased me all the way back to that hall before I finally killed him seriously thought that would be my end I just couldn't shake the guy.

I gamed Morokei, long time ago I learned that if you hit the mages containing him with a spell that does no damage like Fury they will break their concentration and attack you, Morokei will be released like usual but he won't attack just floats around the room making him very easy to defeat.  Don't know if that's cheating but I feel it's a clever and very wizardy way of dealing with him.

So that's were I'm at now, Level 15 and having a much needed rest in Whiterun before I make the trek back to the college.

I kinda feel like he's a bit of a con man.  His magical prowess comes from the items he has more than any personal ability.  Storm Atronachs are crazy powerful at low level.
