Tips on Cloaks, Walls and Rune Damage

    AUTHOR’S NOTE

Okay, first off… when I posted this, I was in a rush, and missed a few things. I also posted it in the wrong spot. And I had to wait till I got somewhere with internet again in order to fix it. I have made a few corrections, because I missed the info on Runes, and had a few typos. But before I go any further, I would like to thank Sheezy Baby and Dragonborn1761 for pointing out that I should put this into the Tips & Tricks section… instead of the Blog section, and to Sotek for deleting the original post. Thanks guys!

Okay, for months i have poked around the Tamriel Vault and other places. and i see constant controversy over Cloak and Wall Spells. Some People say that u can boost them.. and some say ya can't.  Now personally, I've always noticed that the Latter was true, but all the arguments made the information that people like me had, useless.

We'd tell someone they did, and other people be like "NUH UH!"  it's just some nonsense, so three months ago i decided to talk to my friends and older brother about it. Nearly all of them instantly said: Yes, both Augments AND the Elemental Masks DID in fact boost these two spell. So for three months, me, my older brother, my younger sister. and Several of our friends ran a unique method of Time Table testing extensively across all our consoles. And we discovered what we already knew: We were right.

So one night, two weeks ago, I finally decided to make an accurate Time Table using the In-Game Clock on the cloaks themselves... and ran the Wall Spells against Highborn's Clock. I decided to run with the Shock Spells as it is the most solid and Least Resisted element in the game. And The Time Table Testing Idea actually came to me when i failed a Time Trial on Sonic Generations. go figure.

Before I continue with Walls and Cloaks, I would like to mention that I also worked with the Rune Spells. What I found however, was that the runes were ENTIRELY unaffected. The only way to boost Rune Damage is to Dualcast it. This has been tested by several people conclusively across all 3 consoles. Sorry rune guys, I know how you feel… I like usin ‘em too L

But anyway, i rigorously set out to get these results and post 'em up. Final Tests were done on a regular ps3 copy with patches and DLC, and then I borrowed my older brothers’ Legendary Edition and ran the same tests for conclusive results.

The Test Character: High Elf, Female: Level 23

    Birthsign: Atronach

    Destruction: level 80

Gear: Archmage’s Robes, Gauldur Amulet Fragment (Magicka), Thalmor Boots (irrelevant), Thalmor Gloves (also Irrelevant)

Powers and Abilities: Seeker Of Sorcery / Highborn

Enemy Tested On: Giant at Secunda's Kiss

All other info is irrelevant as well.

Shock Cloak: Ten tests per setup on Novice Difficulty. when casting a cloak, it lasts for 65 seconds.

    1. No perks or mask: shock cloak time remaining: 9 seconds, 10 times in a row. Total Kill Time - 56 seconds
    2. Both perks: Shock Cloak time remaining: 27 Seconds, 10 times in a row. Total Kill Time = 38 seconds
    3. Both Perks + Zahkriisos: Time remaining: 35 Seconds, 10 times in a row. Total Kill Time = 30 seconds
    4. Both Perks + Zahkriisos + Disintegrate: Time Remaining: 39 seconds, 9 Times, 38 once… but I think that was because I kinda lapsed for a moment instead of bringin up the menu. Total Kill Time = 26 seconds

-Note- I also tested Dual-Casting at each level five times each… but it made no difference in kill speed. As an additional note, I also tested Base casting versus casting with the apprentice stone. The Weakness to Magic also made no difference.

Wall Of Storms: Tested with Otar’s Staff Of The Storm Wall. Apprentice Difficulty… The Giant died too fast on Novice to get accurate recordings.

-Note- bear in mind that I could not accurately test Wall Of Storms vs. the Shock Cloak clock… as when he got close, the cloak did more damage. So I instead tested it against the clock on Highborn.

    Also tested 10 times each

    Results:

    1. No Perks: Time Remaining = 34-36 seconds
    2. Both Perks: Time Remaining = 44-45 seconds
    3. Both Perks + Zahkriisos: Time Remaining = 48-49 Seconds
    4. Both Perks + Zahkriisos + Disintegrate: Time Remaining = 48-49 seconds. I don’t know if it’s a glitch, but Wall Of Storms never got the Disintegrate Effect.

-Note- Wall Staves DO build you Destruction skill over time. Otar's staff took me from 63 to 80 while i was leveling for these tests. I have also had Several other players confirm this on both PS3 & 360. Also, I found with further testing that Wall Of Storms from a staff does not seem to initiate the disintegrate perk, but casting it from your hand does. At least I never got it too trigger off the staff.

After All That, I decided to do one final test, still running apprentice difficulty: How fast could I kill one giant when using these two things in tandem at their full power, and with the cloak harboring disintegrate? So I dualcasted the Lightning Cloak, and saved, then measured the distance of the cloaks’ range. Reloaded the save, and went forward. And started firing the staff at the moment the cloak hit him, ten times.

The Result was 51 seconds. 51 seconds remaining on highborn… 7 times. 53 twice, because disintegrate kicked in those two times. And the other result was 48… that was because he did that ground slam and sent my camera angle straight to Oblivion. The Prick.

And everyone on the gamefaqs boards says Destruction Magic is useless… heh. I’d call droppin a Giant on Apprentice in roughly nine secons with a cloak and only one wall pretty good. But that’s just me J

-Note- Also be aware that the increased cloak damage also effects the elemental damage of your melee attacks with regular weapons, bound weapons, enchanted weapons, bows and unarmed damage... to the cloaks damage cap upon it's activation. The cloaks each do the same amount of damage that casting the basic spell of that respective element does with one hand, and that same amount of damage is added to your outgoing Physical attacks.

    1. Flame Cloak = Flames
    2. Frost Cloak = Frostbite
    3. Shock Cloak = Sparks

That's Right, you heard me. Unarmed Damage is affected too. This means that a hand to hand fighter with an Active Fire Cloak with both perks, Azhidal, and Aspect Of Terror, gets an additional 27 Damage a punch on strike, and 15 for Ice and Lightning Respectively and that’s ON TOP of the damage the cloak is already doing..  However, Power Attacks do not further boost the effect of the cloaks damage: a power attack with a shock cloak at full strength does not give an extra 30 shock damage. It's still only 15, but it can add up.

-Note- Be Advised that Magical Resistances and Spell Absorption Ratios can dampen the cloak effects of your physical hits, along with the cloaks constant damage. Shooting an Enemy like Miraak with a Bound Bow from a distance with a cloak active may cause his spell absorption to trigger. But it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The Resistance has been conclusively tested, but we’re not entirely certain on the Spell Absorption.

Thank you to my Older Brother MrFeralDuck for helping me test and confirm all the weapon and unarmed info. He also tested Cloak Damage with the Blooadskall Blade Beam on his PC version. He could find no solid evidence that the beam was affected by cloaks. but he is still workin on in. He hopes to have a solid answer soon.

So anyway… there ya have it. The final test results after 3 solid months of hard work. I wanted my first post to the The Tamriel Vault to be a build I was doing for the longhammer. But then I found out that Raidriar did a build similar to the one I was workin on… (sigh) oh well.. I might still post mine tho, as our builds did have a few differences.

But I guess some info to help my fellow Skyrim players will more than suffice.

I hope that this will help you guys out. But now that it’s done. I’m gonna use this info for another build I’m working on, and I’m gonna make this one my first posted build to the Vault.

So... I've read through this carefully. I didn't know the unarmed stuff and will try it myself to be sure it works on my version.
The rest seems to be... pointless. You should definitely flesh out the most important stuff here.

as a note... my brother also said that using an orc's berserk does not further boost the magic damage. but it does double your current unarmed value.

and i'm sorry if it doesn't satisfy you. I put this up here because i just thought it could help some people out.

but to each his own i guess. just take what you want from it.  that's what it's there for after all.

It's not about satisfying someone. I'm trying to say that you should make the important part of the build more visible.

this wasn't really meant as a build. just an info on the cloaks and walls themselves. there really was no purpose for the build other than to test the spells. i chose a high elf because the boosted mp made it easier for the cloak testing. that's really all there is to it.

The only other thing to note, was using Highborn so i could immediately cast a flesh spell to help stifle the damage and us restoration magic if i got hit.

but i think i can see what you mean. i'll try to remember more on build specifics if i do any other tests in the future.

    So thanks

I didn't know this was ment to be a test only. Rename the tipp "Test: Walls and Runes" or something like that, then.

can i rename it without having to repost the whole thing?

Oh btw Fire Cloak can reach up to 33 dmg per second. This being that the base 8 plus Aspect of Terror's additive 10 (to level affected by fear effect and damage) equals 18. Now 18 x 1.5 equals 27. With Ahzidal's mask it reads 27 x 1.25 or 33.75 damage per second. Also you can stack the Ebony Mail cloak with another cloak to boost up unarmed fighting efficiency to make a formidable brawler type character without the usual enchant rings of godly unarmed or gauntlet stacking.

If you take both perks of augmented fire before aspect of terror, the dmg will be +15 instead of +10.
