    Hey everyone, ZonnoSpark + 1 here to talk about a massive part of a character that often gets overlooked: Goals.

    So you've thought of your character, they've got a name and a backstory and you even know with what implement they're gonna kill people with, but now what? Goals are what sets character apart, one Dunmer Thief might want to do the classic 'make 100,000 gold' while the other might want to collect the rarest valuables in Skyrim.

    So we're here to ask you, yes you dear reader, what your character's goals are, how you decided them, why they're important to the character, and what will you do when they're completed.

    And for this discussion, and for all discussion in future, we politely ask you to reply to someone elses comment once you've posted yours - the fun is in the discussion after all!

    Nice team name!

    In one word, redemption. My main is a Journeyman (actual guild Borommakot and I created a while back) rogue, so think your standard assassin. Just as a warning, he has no name yet (still in the creation process) so bear with me.

    I decided this as his main goal for the main reason of having a gradual character development. In summary, back in High Rock (his home province), his carelessness and desire for lesser things in life result in someone close to him being killed. The king of Daggerfall exiles him, and now he's a guilt-ridden and homeless bum in a province he's not very familiar with.

    So he sees Skyrim as a new chance of redemption for his past failures. He sees that earning it is by establishing the Journeyman in Skyrim, and upholding their ideals throughout the land. Driving the Imperials out, hunting the vampires, and ending Miraak are all part of his journey.

    Still got to finish up the last bit though. May even be a future build if it's to my liking.

    Thanks Rogue! I think it has a nice ring to it :P

    Characters trying to redeem themselves are some of the best to come up with in my eyes, because its so personal to the character. They can be the only person in Tamriel who know about their goal, or even the only one that thinks they need to redeem themselves, and of course only they know when they've completed their mission.

    Plus, there's so many options for the character when they finally make peace with themselves (if they can, and its not a lifelong mission). Are they finally at rest, and can settle down to a quiet life they've desperately craved? Or do they now feel empty, the lack of purpose in their life when previously only one thing mattered would be so jarring, maybe they wander listlesssly, taking bounty after bounty until they die, still desperate to feel that urgency they did before, maybe they go mad? If you don't plan this when making a character, the moment when you finish complete this kind of goal with your character can be the most important, you step into the shoes of your character and have to really think.

    (Insert joke about me changing my name all time so we can't decide on a name)

    Oh boy, this is something mainly because I have a lot of characters to work with, but I am only going to do one of them and one I love.

    Potemus the Wolf King of Solitude and the Dread/Death King of Skyrim, he is more or less your standard Necromancer, but he has more depth to him. Potemus' main goal is to bring peace to Skyrim and the rest of Tamriel by using fear, for what is the greatest fear of them except for Death itself. I decided on this from a "book" I wrote when I was in Eighth Grade about a former healer named Vladimir, who after seeing a bunch of bloodshed and innocents being killed and other things. He realized that he could no longer support either group that was fighting, so he dwelled in what was called "Death Magic, Black Magic, or Forbidden Magic", because to wanted to bring back those that had died too early or were of importance to others. So as he dwelled further into this magic he became a devout follower of the Devil known as Necrofer, where he learned how to become a Lich and he realized one thing. The one thing that controls people is fear whether it be not eating, having someone take away your beliefs or Death. So long story short he ends becoming King of the province known as Rusvic, where it has become a land of the dead and fear for he realized the best way to save humanity is by killing all of it.

    So after finding this story again, I wanted to translate it Skyrim, and I did so. Potemus sees that if Skyrim is a Land of Dead or a Kingdom of Fear than that will bring peace, and he can conjure up massive armies of Daedra, Skeletons, and even Dragons if anyone or any army tries to go against him. He will do anything he has to do to achieve what he believes is right and will create peace.

    I could go on and on about Potemus because he is the only character I have created that has so much depth to him.

    So thats possibly the two most metal thing I've ever read... Eventhough this guy is obviously a few bones short of a skeleton (whether that was due to the violence and loss he's experienced or thats how he's always been) you can't help but appreciate the (very twisted) logic - Skyrim is constantly under threat by Daedra and floating islands and war after war after war, so being ruled by the one thing they fear more than all of that combined will mean they'll try as hard as possible to survive. Not exactly moral, but you can see why.

    @Rouge

    (insert clever banter)

    Ahh, redemption the oldest goal ever and the most stable one, but it always the easiest and most reliable one.

    So know after being exiled from his homeland and the death of someone, and now he seeks redemption. I like that, mainly because it reminds me of one of my other characters, though he was turned into a Vampire and became a follower of Malacath and later seeks redemption through the Divines by helping others and protecting Skyrim.

    Trying to find peace in another province is an idea I have always loved because since no one knows you, they can never judge you and they only see and hear what the character does in Skyrim. Plus, you can run this with different ideas such as he seeks redemption through the people themselves, the divines, or whoever else. Also, you can expand this even further by thinking can he forgive himself for what he did, because then you can open up a whole new archetype with that scenario.

    @Zonn

    I know you didn't but might as well get the joke out of the way. :)

    Hey, I have been listening to Metal since I was Seven and have never stopped since then. XD

    Potemus really isn't insane, it is that he was a Healer for the Legion and after seeing the horror the did he realized that neither the Legion nor Stormcloaks really cares about the people and if they killed innocent men, women, and children. I mean Potemus himself uses no destruction spells or anything of that sort, for he doesn't want to kill, he wants to heal. Also, thank you for pointing out the twisted logic in him because that was the point. Even though this seems illogical, once you examine it and rethink it, it does make sense.

    What do you think he'd do if he achieved his goal? Would he act like a king, undead patrolling the streets of Tamriel, snuffing out resistance in the name of peace? Or would he take a more subtle approach? Like Robin Hood but with zombies and dragons... so a better Robin Hood.

    I can answer this easily, he acts like both honestly. He has Undead and Daedra patrols patrolling the streets to sniff out resistance in the name of peace for if that happens then more violence and death will, something he opposes and hates. At the same time though he helps the people in need if a farmer needs gold to buy another cow or such, then he gives the farmer gold or if a group of people wants to see their loved one once again he can do it for them. He sees that everyone is equal and those in power should help the people. He allows the Dunmer to openly worship the "Good" Daedra, the Nords worship Talos, and a selected few Daedric Princes. Also, he gives aid to Morrowind to help them rebuild.

    Interesting... That's a really cool concept Brave! Its weirdly distopian and utopian at the same time.

    Yeah, I know it is, but in a way, it works out very well. I am more than likely post a profile of him soon, just so you and others can get really get to see the depth of him.
