I just found about a glitch that allows more than one NPC follower, without leaving quests open (which may be very RP-unfriendly to some). I found this written on a forum so all credit goes to that user, called ultimatedovahkiin.
Basically, the Dragon Seekers quest from the Companions allows you to ask the quest-giver to follow you for the dragon slaying. This should dismiss Serana (the NPC I tried with) but actually doesn't. At the end of the short quest, the Companion fighter will leave you, and the game will internally register you as able to hire a new follower Of course this allows you to pick the second follower you prefer.
(Dragon Seekers is one of the radiant quests Vilkas and Farkas may give you, at the end of the Companions questline.)
I didn't see this in the glitches / exploits sections, and thought of sharing - I hope it wasn't somewhere else already!

I didn't finish Dawnguard with this character yet! I was at "Prophet", when she has all the follower interactions (like sharing items).. but I suppose it could/should work right from the first quest

Bryn, I think it does stack! And as Robert says, all the followers are regular followers, with all the normal commands.
I haven't tried, but I'm gonna have a little group as well! (and bring up the difficulty to the max, or I'll be crushing everything )
Edit: Aela and Serana together! Nice combination, seem fun!

Can you repeat this? Like starting Dragon Seekers, having your normal follower and companion, compainion leaves and you pick up another follower, then start quest again and repeat? That would be so cool, havinga party of five or so proper followers!
