DaggerXL Dilemma: Cannot Find [Insert Spontaneous File Name Here

  So I'm having a pretty frustrating time trying to install DaggerXL to my computer; I'm able to install Daggerfall's base game as per Bethesda's own instructions, but afterwards it's become a hair-pulling nightmare trying to figure out what exactly is preventing DaggerXL from finding the files that it needs. If I tell it to pull from the directory C:\dosgames\DFCD\DAGGER\Arena2, it'll say that it can't find BLOCKS.bsa; if I tell it to pull from the alternative directory, it'll say that it can't find MAPS.bsa; if I combine both directories so that the files are all in the same place, it'll say that this version of Daggerfall has been "tampered with". I'm... not entirely sure what exactly it wants me to do. Any advice?

  I don't know what DaggerXl is, I got regular Df to run with no trouble on Dosbox. Does xl make it more modern?

  Thankfully the issue has been... semi-resolved. But my efforts to write a coherent character name have been strangely glitchy.

  Okay, now I've got a new problem; I think it's searching for a controller that isn't there. My character moves by himself and some key bindings aren't working at all.

  Eh. . . if you've got one, maybe plug a controller in? When I played I had to reset most of the controls. If you haven't played before it could be that you just don't realize what the mouse does. :D

  Regrettably I don't have a controller on hand.  It's frustrating though; like when I'm trying to name my character, there's a key that's already selected (like "r" for instance) and with each letter I type, it adds another "r". And I'm unable to backspace it. Weirdest thing!

  Oh damn, that is weird. Does DaggerXL configure the controls or change the gameplay? On my DF I think I can backspace while naming.

  Now that I think about it, I definitely can. But I have noticed that button commands sometimes leak through menus, like pressing Enter to save also makes Enter do whatever it is set to in the controls.
