Event Build: The Moonchild

  • July 31, 2015

As an entry to the Deities Event, this build focuses on the worship of two particular gods. Jone and Jode, the Twin Moons worshipped by the Khajiit of Elsweyr.

The Moonchildren were a chapter of paladins in the Khajiiti temple of the Twin Moons. They swore to protect and defend the Moons forever, as they represented the guardians of Elsweyr and the protectors of all Khajiit. The Moons kept the world stable and their Motions predicted events on Nirn, protecting them and shaping their lives from the womb to the grave. The Moons were the most important part of every Khajiit's day-to-day life and, as told by the Clan Mothers, it was the sacred duty of the Khajiit to, in turn, guard the Moons and restore them if the enemies of the Khajiit ever stole them from the heavens. Azurah had made the Khajiit fast and strong, agile and able to climb the dark and the light to reach the clouds in case the Moons ever required them. The Moonchildren were part monk, part warrior and trained all their days for this sacred duty, embodying the personalities of the Twin Moons themselves in their service.

One dark night in 4E98, the sun sunk beneath the horizon but the Moons never rose. That night, the children of Elsweyr were born without shape and without destiny. For two years, each night the Moons failed to show and all the magic and skill of the Khajiit were unable to restore the Moons. Chaos reigned in the Void Nights and faith in the gods of the Khajiit was lost. Instead, the Elves were required to perform the duty the Khajiit themselves could not.

In shame, the Moonchildren were officially disbanded, but the worship of the Moons never ended and small bands of devout men and women kept the cause and chapter alive in small, remote locations over Tamriel.

    Race: Khajiit Vampire

    Standing Stone: The (Advanced) Atronach

    Stats: 1 / 1 / 2

Minor Skills: One-handed, Light Armor, Conjuration

    Necklace - Stamina, Health, Illusion

This build revolves around two particular mechanics that emphasize the light/dark balance of this character and are the focus/slam-dunk moves of the two combat styles of the Moonchild.

    • The Style of Jone: The Little Moon God is the aspect of the Khajiit playfulness and boundless energy. Its style involves lots of explosions and pretty colours as well as substantial amounts of absorbtion of energies. Conjuration and Sword+Board is the standard set. Thwacking enemies with Dawnbreaker while rising their friends for backup is the standard fare. A Bound Sword can easily be used before Dawnbreaker is attained and Conjuration is dead easy to level in the early game with Raise Zombie. Due to our huge investment into Block perks, our shield becomes a massive source of damage mitigation, which allowed us to choose armor for its cool factor, rather than armor rating. It even means that long range combat just requires a shout of Whirlwind Sprint and raising the shield.
    • Key Potions
      • White Cap + Abecean Longfin + Cyrodilic Spadetail = Fortify Restoration, Weakness to Frost
        • Giving a bonus to the magic absorbed from the frosty explosions,
      • Bleeding Crown + Red Mountain Flower + Tundra Cotton = Fortify Magicka, Resist Magic, Fortify Block
        • The ideal defensive buffing potion for this stance

    Jone's Song

    Ahzidal's Ring of Necromancy + Vampirism + 100% Spell Absorb + Dawnbreaker + Zombie

Commanding the vibrancy of life and un-life, Jone spreads the power through the air in a wide swath of colour and destruction, allowing it to swell and concentrate on his child.

This allows a great amount of magicka to be absorbed, because Dawnbreaker triggers on an undead's death, even if the undead is your own zombie. Due to the fact we're tagged as "undead" with Vampirism, the affect hits us and is absorbed into our own, constantly draining magicka pool, giving us breathing room while the minions or lower-level beasties flee in terror.

    • The Style of Jode: The Big Moon God is the aspect of the Khajiit tenacity and agility and also takes on one of my favourite stances: shieldmage. An Illusion spell in one hand and the shield in the other, this character has little need or use for looting enemies and so shows the mercy of those older and more powerful and instead incapacitates his enemies. Between Calm, stealth, and the Invisible Shield Charge, enemies are bypassed rather than outright obliterated. A disoriented enemy is also far easier to kill, since the Skyrim standing up animations still take an eternity to play. There's time to knock someone with Shield Charge, break invisibility to hack and poison them with a lingering damaging poison, and then return to invisibility before the enemy AI kicks back in.
    • Key Potions
      • Imp Stool + Scathecraw + Skeever Tail =  Damage Heath, Ravage Health, Lingering Health Damage

        • A great DOT damage that will work while you slip back off into the shadows, letting them die on their own
      • Boar Tusk + Chaurus Eggs + Vampire Dust = Fortify Stamina, Invisibility
        • Originally, the build was based on this potion but the ingredients required more hunting. It still makes this an excellent escape potion.

    Jode's Run

Invisibility + Muffle + Quiet Casting + Shield Charge

Commanding the whisper of Khenarthi's breath that holds the Moons aloft in the heavens, none can hear or see the Moonchild before he has already blown his foes down and slid away into the darkness.

Through some weird fluke, Shield Charge doesn't actually break Invisibility, allowing it to be sustained as long as you want to. 100% Credit to Albino for discovering this little trick. This gives you the ultimate crowd control, allowing you to be almost entirely undetectable with or without sneaking and smacking everyone around with the shield, sending them flying away.

As the last of the Moonchildren, he seeks to do the will of the Twin Moons in helping and protecting his brethren wherever they may be found, especially in Skyrim where they are unwanted and left as outsides (Kharjo's Amulet, Destroy the Dark Brotherhood et al). Seeking the dual nature of the Moons, he serves as both an honourable Khajiiti pilgrim (Quests of Meridia, Kynareth, Mara, Azurah) and a darkened scoundrel (Thieves Guild/Nightingale). Over time, he falls deeper into the darkness of the Void Nights, where faith was lost in his order and seeks to eliminate the Sun entirely, so the Moons can always shine and be watched for signs of disappearing (Dawnguard-Volkihar).

Shamed and forgotten, the Last Moonchild seeks penance by ridding Skyrim and Tamriel of other threats in the hopes of finding the Blessings of the Moons (Main Quest, Dragonborn, Dragon Priest Slaying) but fails. And dies alone.

At last! Great build. I was skeptical of the blast from Dawnbreaker actually being absorbed. Just how often did the Dawnbreaker explosion occur? Whenever I use it, it's a fairly rare occurence. Now to wait for Shin to post his build...

    ...that was sadly expected.

    Nice one, Ely (as always).

I love Jone's Song in particular. Lots of synergy there — it took me a minute to realize you get more Magicka returned/absorbed via the Weakness to Frost, but man, between that and the ring of Necromancy (which I've always overlooked) you've got some serious siphoning going on.

I was hoping to get to use the invisible shield charge glitch first, but c'est la vie. Your use is fantastic, so kudos! This build feels a bit more focused than a lot of your others, which I like. Two forms, no switching weapons/spells really beyond that. Simple, but elegant and effective. That's my kind of build!

I'm glad you managed to get this one out in time! Well done, Ely.

Damn! The main image promised Nordic Carved.....but then we got Nightingale/Elven!

I think that the lore and the backstory are interwoven so perfectly that its actually disguised what this character is in terms of a build/concept.

It's gorgeous to look at, to the point I can't critique it without sounding like an absolute asshole... I think you would need Ben C here...he's actually really good at this kind of thing.

I like it, but I don't know why I like it, just the huge effort I guess...

It's almost like the concept of the build (the bit that I NEED most) is completely missing, but the rest is so perfect that I can't spoil it by saying something negative...

Weird build Elysium...  ...for me anyway!

    +1

Um.... I can't decide whether this is a compliment or not. But... I can thank you for the like!

I really don't know what you mean by the "concept of the build", but I guess that you have your way of building and I have mine.

Sorry for disappointing your armor tastes, tho.
