Blunt and Blade vs One handed and Two handed.

I would like to know people's opinions on which skill setup was better and why. Oblivion's Blade and blunt approach where weapon weight and size didn't matter as much. Or Skyrim's two/one handed seperation where the type of damage dealt has lost most of it's importance. Which do you prefer?

(I have yet to play Morrowind and previous Tes titles. Feel free to bring them into discussion, but please explain the mechanics for the benefit of myself and others who are newer to the series)

I prefer either Skyrim or Morrowind's system. In Morrowind we had Short Blade (daggers, shortswords, tantos, wakazashis), Long Blade (Longsword, Broadsword, Katana, Dai-Katana, Claymore), Axe (War Axe, Battle Axe), Polearm (Spear, Halberd),and Blunt (Mace, Club, Hammer, Warhammer, Staff). This system had only 1 flaw - depending on your choice you were severely limited in artifact selection (this was back when artifacts were the strongest items, not something you crafted).

In Skyrim each weapon type does have a specialisation which I do like. In Oblivion I thought it was kinda silly how you could use the same skill for daggers, claymores and everything in between. You could go both 2-handed and sword+board with the same skill.

To be fair whether it was one-handed in Skyrim or blade in Oblivion, i always favour a sword as a weapon and for me the system hasnt changed as i still gain experience the same way. However i think the greatest change wasnt blunt/blade to 1/2handed, but the introduction of magic to the system. With magic being a choice for one of your hands makes you reconsider what you wield rather than have magic on R2 i believe? So i think that was the greater change, and also i think a good change as it opened up new play styles. However I would argue that the introduction of magic to the hands has argueably been at the detriment of shields. I was always using a shield in oblivion however now choose restoration as a better method of protecting myself in the left hand instead.

On a side note, how many people actually dual-wield swords? i remember Todd Howard championing it in the build up to Skyrim however i dont think ive ever done it.....but then there are many styles im yet to explore

I use dual wielding on my main. I just use potions for healing rather than spells.

The Morrowind system seems to be what I would prefer. A difference between how you use each weapon type, and how they effect your opponents is something I like.

I prefer Skyrim's way.  In fact, I was really happy when I saw the perks that differentiated the weapon types.  The only thing that could have made me even happier was if they differentiated them even further and allowed greater specialization.  But still, it's a step in the right direction.

The other thing missing for me were perks that promoted synergy between different skill trees.

Two handed can deal the most amount of damage for one swing, but really become impractical due to the weakened block and the lengthy swings. Two handed has the highest damage output per second, and a dagger with a mace will absolutely annihilate anything, but one will eventually die due to a lack of blocking. However, just a sword and a shield is by far the most effective, with shield bash effectively nullifying many threats and the ability to quickly stop a powerful attack while you slowly but surely slice your opponent into may pieces.

Or you could use magic or stealth, which are far more effective, do higher damage and keep you safe, as long as they put some perks into fighting back if you are caught or run out of magica.
