The travels of Yuri Woodcutter part 22

  • Lydia and I follow the path south and then east from Fort Hraggstad, passing a road sign pointing to Rorikstead and somewhere ominously called Dragon Bridge. Lydia, ever a fan of the direct approach, tells me to stop getting distracted with my dreams of adventure and stick to the task at hand. We meet a noble on a horse by some stone archways leading to a vista of the land to the south. The noble is none too chatty, but some investigation brings us to a statue of Meridia. Unlike most statues this one talks my language, and demands that I get hold of some beacon light. I can feel Lydia's glare burning into the back of my head as without a word we return to the road to Solitude. Just as we're coming down the mountain some standing stones and what looks to be a faint path catches my eye. With some careful exploration we come to a long dead skeleton, and then a garden variety sabre cat, before reaching a little area of totems next to a waterfall. Lydia suggests calling this place Ravenscar Hollow, which I tell her will do for now, and considering the prevalence of heads on spikes I decide we'll stick with joining the imperial army. We arrive back at the castle for 5:30pm, but then spend an hour wandering around trying to find the lady who gave us the task we just took care of. Eventually we find Rikke, who insists we take the imperial oath with the general. I don't hear Lydia joining in, but I figure she still owes me her loyalty as my house carl. The powers that be then discuss making sure the right man takes up the Nord throne and Rikke explains my contribution will be to get a crown that Ulfric is after. It's late though, so the hunt will have to start tomorrow after Lydia and I make use of an unowned bed I saw while searching the castle. And so it is that Yuri the woodcutter's son leaves Solitude adorned with imperial armour, to head for his first mission fighting not for himself, but for the future of Skyrim. The place I'm heading to, Korvanjund, is just to the north of Fellglow Keep, so I figure it will be at least a day's trek. Lydia and I will head via Ustengrav and then Dawnstar, as doing so will allow me to get back to some of the unfinished Greybeard business from a while ago. At Ustengrav we meet some bandits whose dying acts were to finish off a novice necromancer. I'm guessing there's going to be more mages within but Lydia and I are feeling pretty cocky, having dealt with a troll in the swamplands leading up to this point. Inside we see the remainder of the bandits undone by the main force of the mages, who then in turn fall to the disturbed Nord corpses. I go old school for most of the descent in to the depths of the tomb, and my enchanted sword "Peacebringer" rings as I make short work of Jurgen Windcaller's contemporaries. I'm sure it's what he would have wanted. It's a slog, but after learning a word of power and besting a giant spider in a room which kept setting me on fire, I eventually find that someone from Riverwood has got here ahead of me and taken the thing I came to get. How they managed to get in here without killing all the things I just killed, and without disturbing the cobwebs over the door I don't know, but there it is. The dragon born business drops once more to the lower end of my to do list.
