Zakary the Unknown: In the Camp Part Two

  • "What is this?" I asked again almost yelling. "I wouldn't yell if I were you," the bandit said trying to be helpful. "You might wake the others." "You should be more concerned about your own safety." "Name's Bjorn. Might I know yours?" "I thought you already knew me." "I know only what you told me the last time we met." "And I didn't tell you my name?" "Names were... unimportant." "Why would my name be unimportant?" "Well, you probably didn't want anyone to trace you back to me and possibly find out what we were doing." "And what were we doing?" "Business." "What sort of business?" I was growing impatient, if I didn't get him to talk soon the scroll's effect would wear off and then I would never get anything out of him. "Your questions confuse me." "What?" "Well, of all people you should know what business you were doing." I sighed. "What's this?" I asked for a third time. "That? That my friend is..." "Is what? Answer me!" I was now yelling. "Why the hell would I do that?" The bandit's face was sterner now. The scroll had worn off. "For Talos's sake." I muttered. "Nice amulet you've got there, I wonder how you got it." he taunted. I punched him in the jaw. He spat some blood onto the floor. "Unless you have another scroll with you, you won't find out anything here. I'll give you one chance to leave before I set my bandits on you." "Do you think I would come in here without dealing with them first?" The bandit laughed to himself. I searched the room ignoring the other man. I walked to the table and went through the pieces of paper on it. "I didn't expect bandits to be able to read and write." I muttered. "Oh, we can't," replied the bandit. "We get prisoners to do that for us." This time I was the one that laughed. He had all these pieces of paper and had no idea what was written on them. "They look like receipts." "What's a receipt?" I sighed. I picked up a piece of paper. "So, you get your prisoners to read and write these?" "Aye" "Well, this one is asking for help," I said waving the paper. "In fact most of them are. Except this one. This one isn't from the prisoners it's to them." "What?" "'I got your message and don't worry, I'll come and free you all tonight.' Seems like you have a bit of a problem." I was lying of course but he had no way of knowing that. "If even one of your prisoners gets out then you be sure the Jarl will come to know of your little camp. And then there'll be trouble. For you of course." The bandit was getting nervous. "You can either tell me what I want to know and escape with your life or die here." "There seems to be something you've forgotten." The man wasn't nervous anymore. "And what might that be?" He smiled, his teeth red from the blood. "Poisons don't last forever." It was then that I heard banging on the door. "Hey boss, is everythin' alright?" a voice said from the side. "Damn it!" I cursed. I put the chair with the yelling leader against the door so that no one could get in and stuffed most of the paper into my bag. I jumped on to the table and catapulted myself out the window. I rolled forwards as I landed and looked around. There were bandits everywhere. "Get him!!!" one of the yelled and they all charged towards me. I took out my bow and shot an arrow at one of them. He fell to the ground, the arrow sticking out of his throat. I prepared another arrow and shot another bandit in the arm. She dropped her weapon but continued running forwards. I grabbed another arrow but it was too late, the bandits were upon me. I quickly side-stepped as a bandit brought his sword down. I shoved the arrow in his back and pushed him to the ground. I ducked as a bandit tried to strike at me. I tripped him up and plunged my daggers into his stomach. I left my daggers and grabbed his greatsword. I attacked the closest bandit with all my might. I beheaded him but the weapon flew out of my hands. I ran forwards towards the others. I rolled forwards, ducking a blow from one of the bandits and kicked her in back. She stumbled and fell to the ground. Another ran towards me. I dodged and pushed him towards his companion who he stabbed with his sword as he fell. I brought my arms up to defend my self from a blow. Then kicked the attacker in the attacker stomach. He stepped backwards lowering his hands to his stomach. I immediately snapped his neck. I picked up his sword and wiped the sweat from my forehead. I turned to face the others. There were three left, one of them didn't even have a weapon. I was breathing heavily. I tried to attack the nearest one but missed. He punched me. I stumbled backwards and fell to the floor. The three advanced on me. This is it, I had thought, I'm going to die. "FUS RO DAH" The bandits flew backwards. I had no idea what was going on. The bandit without a weapon broke her neck as she fell to floor. The other two were set on fire by a fireball that them as soon as they landed. I turned to face my saviour. A mage was running towards me. Her hands had a golden glow. She pointed them at me and I felt my energy come back to me. I got to my feet. "Introductions will have to wait. I have business to attend to." I walked towards the hut and kicked the door. I heard the bandit on the other side fall. I unlocked the door. "You're... You're still alive???" the man sounded afraid. "The same can't be said for your friends. I tried doing it the nice way. You weren't helpful. I beat you. You still refused to answer me. Now I've had enough of you. You had your chance and you lost. See you in the afterlife." I turned and walked away. Ignoring his insults. I walked towards the food storage and emptied all the meet on the floor. "Burn it." I told the mage. She did as I asked and we left. We were half way to Whiterun when we heard the wolves howling and, shortly after, the man screaming.

I like what you're doing. My advice to you to maintain the reader's engagement is to vary your use of the word 'bandit' with other synonyms throughout the section. 'Brigand' works. So would 'thug' or 'thief'. Or marauder. You get the idea. Good work!
