Character Backstory Part 1: Verick Bantien

  • "I don't know...you look a little young. Are you sure your eighteen?"

"Of course I am eighteen Edwinn and you know it!" Verick had been looking forward to this day for some time; He was finally going to be in the Imperial Legion.

"alright kid, but don't you go off and die in some far away province. Your mom would have my head!" exclaimed Edwinn, the local recruiter that Verick had become close friends with.

Verick laughed and made his mark on the paper. He decided not to tell Edwinn that his real motive in joining the Legion was travel. He had always wanted to see some of the other provinces of Tamriel besides his native High Rock.

He said goodbye to Edwinn and ran out of the hall. It was a 40 minute walk from town to his family's little farm house and he was already wishing for the warmth of the firplace. As he approached his house he could see his older sister and mother talking through the window and his father chopping
wood outside. It was growing dark he was ready for warmth and a hot meal.

"hello father" he said in a voice that quivered from the cold.

"so your mother told me that you would come home as a Legion recruit. Is that right?"

Verick smiled. "that's right, I'm in the Imperial legion now, off to see the world."

"I'm proud of you son, I just wish you had waited a little longer. I could really use your help around here. You know how hard it has been since your brother left us." Verick's older brother left a few years back to become a sailor and never returned.

"I know, that's why I am going to send you back most of the money I make in the legion. I'll only need a little anyway since they feed and cloth us."

Verick's father laughed and hugged his son. They walked inside where they would spend their last few days together before Verick had to leave for training.

    1 year later...

"you there, Orc...what's you name again?"

"Bantien sir, Verick Bantien." This was the second time he had to repeat his name to his new Captain; An Imperial with a large mustache (and ego for that matter). He also seemed to have little respect for Orcs.

"well Baten, I'm sure you'll fit into your new unit...fine...and you'll mostly be working in the front lines."

"yes sir." Verick had expected this. His previous Captain had found the front lines a logical place to put him as well.

Verick was growing tired of the legion and wanted to do something with his life now that he had done some travelling. As soon as he was released from the legion in one year he would head off to Bard's College in Skyrim. He had always enjoyed learning about the heros of old and liked the idea of
studying the subject further along with learning to play an instrument.

    2 weeks later...

The sudden sound of metal piercing skin startled Verick. He had heard this noise too many times before and knew it meant someone was dead. He whirled around to see a fellow soldier fall to the ground with blood slowly seeping from the side of his mouth. He heard the sound again only this time he didn't see anyone go down. He was relieved that they had missed their target until he looked down and realized that he was the target and that they had definitely not missed.

He was losing blood quickly; he fell to his knees and then onto his back. As he lay there on the ground he thought about his adopted Breton family. They took him in as an infant and loved him like he was their own blood. He loved them so much...

to be continued...that is if anyone likes it haha

An orc bard, eh?  I like it.  Verick should get together with my orc, Lucy.  She was raised in Skyrim by a breton healer and a redguard thief and wants to be sneaky.  If you haven't met Lucy yet, you can find her here: http://theskyrimblog.ning.com/profil...  more
