Hyldes Journal - Entry II - The terrifying happenings in Helgen

  • We where in Skyrim now, and we came to a town called Helgen. As we got off the wagon a grusome thought came to my mind. What if that soldier did'nt manage to tell his superiors about my innocence before he died. What if they where going to execute me now?
My grudge should soon be proven true - they did'nt have me on their captives list alright, but the Legate ordered for me to be handled on the same premises as the nords.
Captives from two carrieges was brought to an executionstand. Was this really it? Was I now going to witness a number of lives being taken, and was I really going to be executed myself in the end?

By Kynareth - so many thoughts ran through my mind at that time. I thought of my dear father, and of my wise mother. I thought of my cousin Faendal in Riverwood. I thought of my people and my king.
While the trees of Valenwood, and memories of me running through them, crossed my mind, a nord captive was executed before my eyes. The Stormcloak leader stood beside me, still gagged.
    S
uddenly a wierd sound filled the sky. It sounded like a big bird, screeching, as if it was searching for it's pray. All the guards looked to the sky and wondered, but the Legate ordered for the ceremony to continue.
    They now called my name.

As I rested my head on the cold, bloodstained stone, I looked to the sky, and into the eyes of my executioner. He suddenly seemed less evil. His job was to take me to Sovengard, he was now my only friend on this path. He raised his axe and I closed my eyes for what could have been the last time.

I was brought back to life before I was even dead, by the return of the screeching sound, now accompanied by the largest creature I have ever seen. Kynareth guide me - it was a dragon!
As it screeched, it sent a shockwave through the crowd - knocking my executioner to the ground. I took the chance and lifted my head from the block to look around - the city was in chaos. The dragons screech was a appearantly a powerfull shockwave that could tear buildings apart, leaving fires and dead bodies everywhere. I was now standing up, looking at the sky to see if I could spot the dragon. As I saw it fly by, I realized that a person had been moaning in pain all along, not far from where I stood. When I turned to look, it was the Legate. She was stuck under a log from a ruined house. Saving her might be my ticket to freedom. Our eyes met swiftly but she looked away when she realized who I was. Even so, I made my way to her and dragged her free with all my power. She did'nt thank me, but tried to stand up and grab my arm. She did'nt get so far though, because some of her ribs had appearantly broken by the weight of the log, and she coughed and fell over. She must by then have realized that I was her only rescue because she pointed towards the city gates and stuttered "my horse.. get my horse back..".
The horse had rund outside the city gates, but only so far that I could still see it, standing next to a juniperberrybush with a worrid look in it's eyes. I rode it back into the city to where the Legate lay. With all my strength, and loud cries from the Legate, I managed to get her seated on the horse. She held the reins with one hand, leaning over the neck of the horse. "you're excused.. you will not be executed.. now get out of my way.." she said, and rode away.

I turned around to look at the city. It was in a terrible mess. The dragon was still about - I saw it grab a soldier and throw him into the sky. I had no option but to run away from this town as fast as I could.
I ran through the gates and continued running for about 5 minutes. When I turned to look back now, all i could see of Helgen was heavy smoke.
I sat down and found my map and compass. I had run west of Helgen, and not far from here was Riverwood, the town in which my cousin Faendal lived, and where my destinated location where.
Despite of all these mishaps, almost leading to my death, I was so lucky as to be a mere 1 hour away from my safespot.
