They could have used any other race in the demo's and I would still pick Nord due solely to TES lore and the Skyrim story line. After my first play through, tho, anything goes regarding race except those darned dirty, enslaving, genocidal elf races (with exception for the highly misunderstood Orismer [Orcs] -- they really do deserve their day in Tamriel).
Why is it that everyone is so obsessed with Nords. Just because they used it for the demos doesnt mean we all have to play like that, it would get boring if everyone was a Nord. I myself am going to be an Argonian.

While you are correct that certain races will have some initial racial bonuses toward a specific styles of play, any race can be utilized for any style of play. It's one of the main reasons why Bethesda reduced the attributes down to just 3, eliminated classes, and opened up leveling qualifiers to all skills; they sought to remove racial and class restrictions to how you play. The only real benefit that I can see for race choice in regard to play style will be the advantages gained at the early levels, but beyond that, characters at a sufficiently high level won't really notice the racial benefits very much.
That said, I'm all for Nord on a first Skyrim play through simply from a story line perspective. Tiber Septim, who started the 3rd era and the first Tamriel-wide empire was effectively a Nord (well, a Nedic settler from Atmora, but raised in Skyrim), he was recognized as a Dragonborn, he recommissioned the Dragonguard as the Blades, and even had a Red Dragon in service to him (soun... less

If you tend to be someone who likes to bash things with a sword, axe or mace, then a Nord or an Orc is likely for you. If you like to be more of a sneaky ranger-type character, then perhaps a Wood Elf is more suitable.
It all really depends on how you like to play. In saying all that, though, your racial choice is of a lesser importance in Skyrim than it was in Oblivion and Morrowind, with the removal of the class system. Go with what you think looks cool, or what you feel suits the character you intend to play. less
I'd suggest to start as a Nord, as Nords make up much of the population. Playing Skyrim the first time as a Nord will likely help you better immerse yourself in the culture of Skyrim.
This and your other posts probably should've been put in the Q and A section. In any case, play the race you find most interesting. Here is link for basic racial info: http://theskyrimblog.ning.com/group/lore/page/5-the-races-of-tamriel
