The Thief: Burned (chapter 1, part 1)

  • Three years later..

Who am I, was the only thought I could conjure in my head. Who am I, and where am I. The snow was coming down harder then I knew was possible. I felt numb, but more than that I felt empty. Why was I here and why can't I remember who I am. I knew some things, but it seems for whatever reason everything else had been taken from me. I need to get up and move, I'll die in no time staying here in this weather. My head hurts and I can't feel my fingers. It was then I realized my hands were bound. Not good, I was in some kind of broken down shack in the middle of what seemed to be a blizzard starting. I looked around saw nothing, only broken pieces of what may have been a safe house. None of those boards on the ground would do me any good while there was no space in between my hands. I began to gnaw at the ropes with a ferocity. I may not know who I am or how the hell I got here, but one thing is for sure. I will not being dying here. It took more time then I wanted, but finally I broke through a bit. It was enough though, I grabbed one of the sharper broken pieces of wood and lodged in the rope. I then used my knee as a prop and pulled with every ounce of energy I had. The rope snapped. I got to my feet and started to walk I looked for any means of a trail, but the blizzard had just laid a fresh layer of snow. The wind was enough to blow me around quite a bit. I needed some kind of shelter any kind.

I saw a split in the earth where two mountains could give me some shelter. The space between the tips of these mountains gave enough cover to slow some of snow and I could see I had managed to stumble onto a trail of sorts. The further I advanced the easier the wind got, as I reached the peak of my path there was a tomb. On top of the tomb was a small cross, along with an iron shield and a cloak of feathers. I grabbed the cloak up as it was sure to save me from dying of exposure. Under the cloak was a small book, with only one line it. "This is the Cloak of Crows worn by someone who time forgot." How fitting I thought, and then left. I hadn't made it fifty feet down the path when I heard the howls. Instantly I felt the fear swell, in these sorts of lands wolves devoured men. The shield! I turned on my heel and ran for my life, I wouldn't dare check behind me. I felt as if I could feel the breath on the nap of my neck. I grabbed the shield and instantly in one fluid motion spun with shield up. It was just in time as a wolf attacked. The force of his blow was more then I was prepared for and I lost my footing. On the verge of falling I used the momentum to back up quickly to a cliff face about ten feet away. This wasn't the best situation, but at least I had my back covered. The wolves began to work together at this point. It  was lunge after lunge and I felt my harms weakening. No, I will not end like this. I held my breath and waited. One lunged, I held fast. Then here comes the other, I dropped to a knee and shove the shield up jerking the wolfs head enough to send it to the ground hurt. The other wolf seemed startled and momentarily caught of guard as it's companion went to the ground. I didn't even think it came natural, I brought the edge of the shield down on it's head and felt the blood hit my hand. This wasn't nearly enough to stop the two and growing over confident would be the death of me. I continued to play it smart. Timing, it was all in the timing. Pause, take a hit, small thrust to the wolfs head and it continued. The wolves were growing tired and so was I. They paused as if hearing my thoughts. Then I made my move, dropping my guard I aloud one of the wolves to lunge close. I grabbed his head and used his own momentum to slam his head into the cliff side. Then the shield side ways at the other wolf. It dropped, both wolves were down. Walking over I picked up the shield and dropped on the one wolf's neck, ending its life. I then walked to wolfs head I bashed against the cliff face and did the same. I would not be cruel and leave them there to be eaten alive. I took a breath looked up and began to move back down the path.

Once I was out of the safety of the passageway the blizzard hit me full force. I trudged through and wondered if I could really make it through this and live. The Cloak of Crows was the only thing that gave me any bit of warmth. None the less I went on, and on and on. I can't remember how long I had wondered through this storm, but finally I came across some kind of building. I walked around to the front and saw a sign. Nightgate Inn. I dropped the shield next to the door and walked inn. It was mostly empty aside from the three inside. There was a bartender, an Orc and  a Nord . The bartender greeted me and the others remained silent and kept to themselves. I approached the bartender casually and sat down at the stool. It was nice to be in out of the blizzard. The fire going behind me warmed my soul. " How can I help you stranger, would you like a bottle of ale?". "no" I replied , "but where about are we?". The bartender smirked. " Lost in a storm are we, no worries friend. Would you like to know the province or hold? ". " Both" I said. " Skyrim, your in the upper part of The Pale." I nodded, " You wouldn't be willing to spare a tankard of water would you?".  " I guess one wouldn't hurt." I drank down the water all once, realizing I was much more exhausted then I was aware. I then said my thanks and went on my way.

Outside the blizzard was still raging and I could see night was about to fall. I would need somewhere to stay, but with no gold I would not impose my self any further then I did. The bartender did me a kindness, something many others would not have done. None the less though there was no where else to go in this weather. I walked to the back side of the inn. There I noticed a celluar trapped door. I went in.
