The Noise In The Woods

  •

I was on my way from my hometown of Falkreath to the village of Rorickstead were my brother lived and works as a smith. I had just gotten done with my training with my father, Marketh, he was well known in our town to be the best Conjurer in town. I had finally learned how to summon a daedra from the realms of Oblivion and I wanted to try out my new spell. So I headed out and was on my way to Rorickstead to show my brother my new and incredible conjuration spell, but little did I know the unexpected surprise that awaited me on my trail.

I had walked the trail many times before more than you could count, and everything on the trail I knew very well. I knew that the road itself was very curvy and really had no straight line to my destination. I also knew that lake Klmalth laid on right of the road and through most of the beginning of the trail. I knew that there would be a fork in the road before you arrived to the lake, but what I did not know was that rumors had been spread that an evil creature had suddenly been raiding this road and had been happening only recently. Traders that had been through the area had found limbs of people scattered about like a ragdoll. Some say they hear its cries during the night and that they would not be able to sleep because of how freighting it sounded.

The trip itself would be a 3-day voyage and that would be without a horse. Sadly I had no horse. It would have to take me three days as it has always because I was no wealthy man. I had done this many times so it did not really bother me until that first night I too heard the cries of the evil creature. It made my hair stand on end and made me break into a heavy sweat. The noise sounded a lot like a mutant wolf with a deep sound to it. It was not close but close enough to make my heart stop a beat. That night I really could not go to sleep; nothing like this had ever really bothered me until now. But once I did sleep I had only nightmares to meet.

Next morning I got up and packed my bags and was on my way. I knew that if I kept at a steady pace today I could possible make it to the intersection of the road I was on. It would be hard because of all the magnificent views the road had to offer, but suddenly I remembered last night and the sound of horror. I knew I had to get to Rorickstead as soon as possible for I could really end up in trouble. I headed out and was on my way, then about a mile up the road saw a stunning sight. It was a family, apparently on their way to Falkreath until they were stopped. What I saw would haunt me until the day I die. It was a family of five, the two parents and three children. The parents were torn to pieces and the children I will not say, it was just too brutal, but you could see on the carriage that there were huge claw marks and appeared to be a total loss. The horses were torn into pieces and just devastated. This was no pack of wolves, no, this must be something big and vicious. A yeti perhaps but they have never been confirmed to live this area. The one thing I do believe could have done this would have to be a Were-Wolf.

I remember reading about them back home, some say they do not exist and that they are a figure of imagination but, but there is going to be a full moon tonight. So I wonder if the Were-wolf is getting practice in for the real show tonight. Last night was probably the wolf going after this poor family and that he is probably still around in a cave using the road as a meat market. These ideas were not settling very well in my head, the more I thought about it the scarier it seemed.

Night was soon to settle and I was only half way to Rorickstead. I did manage to get to the intersection and a little further but still the night was finally here and soon did the horror begin. I set up camp and used an illusion spell to make light instead of a fire, which would probably be more noticeable than my spell. Then it happened, the horrifying roar of the beast and it was very and I mean very close. I stopped my spell and could actually see a little due to the full moon. Everything had a snow type glow to it and the woods looked very dark and cold. From maybe 10 yards from behind me I heard the slightest break of the twig and I instantly turned without warning to look and there was nothing there. Again my hair was on end and ready to jump off and run away. What ever it was, was very swift and invisible and knew how to stalk a prey. I knew now that this must be a Were-wolf and this was going to be my last days in Tamirial. Ahh... I almost forgot that thing my father said to me right before I left on my first journey on this road. He had said that if I were to ever get in such deep trouble of any sort I need only look to the stars for help. Ok let me think what does this mean… I know! I was said to be born under the sign of the thief and that I would have the power to make myself invisible for a whole minute. I don’t know how well it would work against a Were-wolf but I had only seconds to think. I turned back around and right in front of me was an ugly red-eyed Were-wolf with the most fearful teeth imaginable. They looked as sharp as Mehrunes Razor! As soon as I took in the full image I used my spell and instantly vanished from existence. As I did this I ran for my life forgetting all of my stuff for my life was on the line.

I ran faster than I have ever had before in my life and I got a chance to turn around for a moment to find that the wolf was no where in sight, it had again disappeared. So I kept on running and then I could hear the sound of paws hitting the ground and knew it was running faster than I was. It had simply had given me a head start and I only had a few seconds ahead of him. As I ran I saw a faint light up ahead and noticed that it was the town of Rorickstead, I would surly find refuge there! I ran with all my heart, I ran so hard that the complaints from my legs were no longer bothering me. I had to make it. The wolf was nearing I could now hear the huffing and puffing of the wolf and then something remarkable happened, something that if it had not happen I would have been a sure goner. An arrow from the man I knew so well, that was scouting outside for bears and deer, had shot the wolf right between the eyes and the Were-wolf fell with a loud THUMP! I stopped in my tracks and suddenly I start to fade back into existence as the spell begins to stop. There in front of me was my brother, he had the detect life spell in use and could tell somebody was running from something big and dangerous. “Shadowrend! Are you stupid or what! Is there a brain in that big elf head! You could have died or worse have been bitten! Have you not heard the rumors, that there is something out killing on that trail?!” “Well, not until now.” “ They have me out scouting for anything suspicious and dangerous. I will have to tell the chief about this. Come brother, lets get back to the city and get you in the warmth. You must be cold in this weather.”

Well after I settled I told him about my journey over and about the horrific sound. I also got to show him my new Conjuration spell, which I summoned a Frost Atronach, which was brilliant. He was very glad for me and said I should from now on use them pointy ears for some use and listen to the people and what they have to say. After staying a few days, I left and went back to my town, but this time my brother gave me a vary valuable present before I departed, he had gotten me a horse to ride back and forth through the cities. I thanked him a million times and left for my journey back home. I will never forget that trip.
