Pre-Skyrim Jitters

  • Okay, here's what I'm personally worried about: hearing Todd Howard talk about all that radiant AI and how it will do all these dramatic brings me back to this demo of Oblivion I found:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/video/demo-demons%20tration-elder-scrolls/7904

After watching this, I'm starting to wonder about all those things he - Todd Howard - said Radiant AI will affect, ie. dynamic quests, strangers asking you to train them, strangers hearing of your skill and asking for a duel, a wide variety of scenarios that will happen if you drop a sword in the middle of town... etc.

'Cause I know for sure that nobody ever came up to me in Oblivion and asked me to stay the night. Or ever saw an NPC so fed up with their dog that they not only paralysed the canine but proceeded to light it on fire when it didn't stop. The picking up of topics from listening to conversations was pretty accurate but they must have edited the part out where the NPCs decided to have a conversation about mudcrabs....3 times!

Please let me know what you guys' thoughts are on this! Am I not the only one with this concern? What are your speculations?

Todd actually addressed this concern some while ago. I can't find the video right now, but the gist of it was that they only had the actual hardware (XBox) for Oblivion a few months before the game was finished. PS3 came even later.
    As a result the...  more

I watched the whole demo. Everything he said came true except for the Radiant A.I. however I'm not going to have huge expectations on Radiant Story or Radiant A.I. I think it will be somewhat improved but not to even the extent shown in the Oblivion demo.

Yeah, I know what you mean - the AI wasn't as good as they claimed it would be in previews.
Personally, I'm keeping my high expectations in check.  I would absolutely love for Skyrim to deliver a flawless, emergent world full of unexpected encounter...  more

It sort of reminds me of Peter Molyneux's promises when it comes to Fable. It seems that every incarnation of Fable will be spectacular and ground-breaking, but it seems to make strides not as large as expected. That is not to say Skyrim will not be all i...  more

I can see your point here, and it's something that I worried about for a while, too.
However, I have confidence that Bethesda have polished the Radiant AI system to a sufficient degree so that it does what they expect, and what they say it will. Aft...  more

Yes Weird Considering that bethesda had produced skyrim on the same hardware they were using 6 years ago but with a million more things in, maybe they were just saving Radiant AI because they knew they were releasing skyrim on the same generation hardware...  more

Good point you made there! I makes me worry as well....
I imagine that Bethesda came up with the idea for Radiant AI while making Oblivion, but it couldn't be achieved on the hardware at that time. Nothing of what Todd Howard says in the video made ...  more
