Which Race Should I Be?

  • On my first playthrough, I plan on being a battlemage focusing on Restoration, Destruction, and 1 handed blade. Therefore, I'll need a large pool of starting Magicka but also some skill in 1 handed. So this is my question, which race should I play for this? I know Dunmer are good for this, but in my experience they don't get very much magicka until later on in the game, and even then it's still minuscule compared to an Altmer's. My top choices are Dunmer, Altmer, Breton (maybe), or Nord. These are the only races that particularly interest me at the moment, so please only say which of these you think I should be. Comment away! Thanks!

All races start with the same health and magicka.. the only differance is racial powers and starting skill bonus which can be overcome.. dunmer should get destruction and one hand bonuses.. and bretons would only get restoration.. the only advantage to go...  more

Alright, thanks for the input guys. I'm not going to be able to decide before I actually have some time playing them, so I'll most likely make a few characters and play each for a short time, and decide who I like most.

Dunmer would be great if you decide to be a more one handed weapon battle-mage, they are strong, agile, healthy, fast and they are naturally skilled with destruction magick.
But if you plan to use destruction as your main weapon I think Breton would ...  more

Defintely Breton. Me and some of my friends have used a heavy battlemage breton in the past and it works great.

The ultimate battlemage race must be Breton cuz they have a magicka skills boost, are resistant to magika, unlike Altmer who are strong in magicka, but also have a weakness for it (if this isn't changed for Skyrim). The one handed skill just need some tra...  more

one thing i do in oblivion, im not sure if it'll be the same in skyrim, is make an orc and give him the apprentice birthsign. orcs have a resistance to magic so the major weakness to it of the birthsign are leveled out some. now you can have a great warri...  more

For my first play through... definitely a Nord spellsword because I think that race/class will fit the main story much better from a game immersion perspective.  After that, likely a Khajiit thief so I can go back and steal every uber unique item that I hear about.

Alright, thanks for the replies guys! Right now my choices are basically down to Dunmer or Nord (Nord just to fit the setting of the game).

Everyone starts with the same 100 points of magica.. so dunmer aren't disadvantaged at all
