I heard on some games journalism site that it is possible to modify, say, an iron helm by attaching leather strips on the inside for comfort (and probably a small stat bonus).
Doesn't that just light your fire?!
If true, I'm really excited to see how the smithing interface allows for such things! That level of customization also opens up room for hopefull speculation that one could customise weapons by adding a favorite jewel to the hilt or shaft of the blade. Who knows?
Whatever the end result, I think it is safe to assume that Bethesda wanted to take crafting and turn it from the barely-implemented-ghost of what most other RPGs offer (that it was in previous titles) and instead make it one of the semi-secret star features of the game.
I believe that the reinclusion of ore nodes in mines and caverns and the introduction of an actual rock mining ability are evidence that Bethesda is much more serious about resource gathering and custom gear crafting this time around than they have ever been before (maybe even because deep gear crafting features are becoming a staple in competing RPG franchises like Two Worlds and World of Warcraft, etc).
What do you think? :) Please comment with your hopes/opinion/criticism!!
