Ramiel stories 1: Arrival

  •  I remember a room.. A purpose. Soft candlelight and.... a statue.

Pain. Searing pain on my face. Someone pushed me... hard. I fell until I lost track of time. After I woke up... glimpses of snow, men shouting and fighting. I black out again.

When I wake up I see the sky. Seeing the sky comforts me for some strange reason.

I see... trees. Snow. Where am I? I noticed I am bound on carriage. There are others with me. A gagged man, a nervous thief and a warrior. We arrive at a town.. nearing our destination it seems...

They loaded us off the carriage. I seem to be in line for execution. Still so confused. I don't feel I like I should give a damn about what they want to do to me. I just don't know why. Their actions seem... insignificant to me. All villagers... they've come to see men get executed..?

The captain orders something and I get shoved into the mass waiting for execution. In the crowd I hear a sudden roar in the air. So familiar. Seems so familiar. Just can't get my hand on it though. No one else seems to notice. They continue with the executions and a soldier is the first one. What a waste.. Have they no understanding? I get ordered to the block. They force my head against the wet stone. I can smell the blood..

A roar again. Now the others notice it as well. I feel... anxious. I can feel something is approaching.I get a short glimpse of something between the tower and a mountain.

My heart starts racing. I know what it is. A dragon. A dovah. It lands on the tower and seems to be watching.. It's eyes pass through me, not recognizing, even though I feel it should recognize me.

It shouts. Chaos. Fire raining from the skies.

I get pulled away from the block and into the tower. I try to move up the tower, but the dragon breaks the walls and turns it into a fiery hell. An unlucky soldier burns alive...

My ears are ringing, I get pushed out the tower and try to make it a jump. I land inside some building. I make my way downstairs and out.

The dragon lands in my path and tries to burn a child. My captor, Hadvar, saves him.

I join Hadvar and move forward. The dragon lands on a wall and burns the ground. Such hatred. Such rage. What can a man do against such a remorseless creature?

Me and Hadvar make it inside. He unbinds me and ironically, tells me to arm myself. I find similar clothes as he has and a sword. The weight of the sword in my hand... it feels... natural.

I give it a few swings an notice that I am actually quite strong.. No time to wonder around, Hadvar pulls me forward.

We meet two soldiers. Hadvar calls them stormcloaks. We try to reason with them, get them to join us and get out of here. They won't have it. For a few minutes, I am a swirling vortex of steel. Everything seems natural. Hadvar attacks the other soldier and I get left with a woman handling a two-handed hammer. She makes a few powerful strikes, easily evaded. I thrust my sword through her.

A woman dead... I killed her.. I tell myself that there was no other way and it wasn't my fault. We have to keep going.

We go down. I hear screams. Hadvar tells me something. All I hear are the words "torture chamber"... I get dizzy and find a table to get myself steady. There was a small struggle here, two dead stormcloaks. Smell of steel and blood in the air.

There is a book on the table, something about a "dragonborn". Hadvar tells me to grab everything I can, so I empty the whole table to my pack.

Hadvar is talking to two imperials. He wants to go and the other one joins us. I am just about to leave when I hear an comment from the other imperial about torturing. I look into his eyes and see no remorse. I lose control. I can see myself unsheathing my sword and plunging it into the man's neck. I swipe the sword clean with his clothes and run after my companions.

We go deeper. We run into huge spiders and a few stormcloak soldiers but they are easily taken care of.

We continue to a bridge with Hadvar. The other imperial is left behind when the tunnel collapses on the bridge...

Hadvar and I continue. There is a bear in our way. A huge creature, must be as strong as three men. I decide to take care of it with a bow. Within seconds, the bear is dead. I walk over to it and make sure with my sword. I take a few minutes and cut some meat out of it, I might need it. Hadvar tells me he is going to scout ahead..

Hadvar runs towards me and yells to me something about an exit. I run with him. The cave starts to collapse, at least it feels like it. Falling rocks pound my back but I keep running. Both of us are running. There is light, it's an exit! We race to the exit and step outside.

Blinding light for a while. Hadvar regains sight first and warns me. The dovah flies just above us. It doesn't seem interested in us anymore. We are insignificant, like insects.

Finally, I have time to think. Where am I? Who am I? All I have is my name, Ramiel.

Hadvar tells me to join him at Riverwood, a town nearby. I nod and look to the sky. I guess I have to start somewhere. I join him and start walking - I have arrived.

Niko, I really like the voice of your main character, Ramiel.  Intelligent, but confused, capable and strong, but compassionate.  This perspective is what makes this blog entry so good, and I hope you continue.
The pictures are nicely done...such ho...  more

I agree. As seemingly generic as the plot devices are, you wrote them well. I want to see where this goes too. Well done.

    @Vix
Thank you for the feedback. The Dockworker had a huge influence on the outlook of the blog. I really liked the way he build his and I borrowed a lot of elements from that.
I have created the discussion in the story corner as you suggested...  more
