Conan the Cimmerian 3: The Rescue

  • I awoke the next morning the sun gazing down at my face. I wiped what snow there was away and packed my camp up. Before I left I decided that I actually needed a place to go and something to do so I took out my map of this country and started planning. Many places on this map were blank and I needed to explore in order to fill the rest out myself but I had decided that I would head back to Whiterun.

As soon as I reached the city walls I yelled out "At last! Time for some mead and some women, Conan the Conqueror has come!" I did not care to much for the rest of the land of Skyrim, this city itself, this Whiterun reminded me of my youth back in Hyboria. The flatlands with the occasional hills and the mountains whose tops would disappear thanks to the clouds. This is the part of Skyrim that I belonged to, no matter where I go or what I do, this is my retreat, the place I come to drink, brawl and bed all women.

I reached the market right outside of the tavern and my path was blocked by two burly men and one fragile old woman. I recognized them, the men were of the clan Battle-Born and the woman was of clan Gray-Mane. Fralia was her name, I found out that her son Thorald was missing and that the men she was arguing with, the Battle-Born, have something to do with his disappearance.

The Battle-Born were Imperialist loyalists. To me the Empire seemed to be corrupt and weak, they were invaders of this land and had no reason of being here. I decided that I would help this woman knowing that I would get the chance to kill Imperials and Thalmor alike.

Fralia told me to talk to her other son Avulstein, he could tell me more about what to do. Avulstein was a tall strong and slightly older Nord with little armor and long white hair flowing over it. He ran towards me weapon in hand, yelling. He did not trust me at first and I the same towards him. Fralia stopped us just before we started to kill each other. She told him that I could be trusted and that I agreed to help find Thorald. Reluctantly we put our weapons away, my sword Atlantea glowing even brighter at the thought of killing Imperials. Avulstein asked me to sneak into Clan Battle-Born's hall and see if I could find anything that could link them to the disappearance of Thorald. So I left and headed into the enemies lair.

I reached the house silently and under the shadows. The doors stood firm but the lock was nothing compared to my skills. It took but five seconds and I was in the hall of the Battle-Born clan. As I searched through the house I ran into two of the clan sleeping in their beds, went through their pockets and moved on. I found a room securely locked up and had to go through a few lock picks before I managed to get the room open.

In the room I found a few books and a desk hidden from the rest of the house. I went through the books looking for any thing on the whereabouts of Thorald but found nothing. As I came upon the desk there was a letter written to the Battle-Born from the Empire. They were holding Thorald and interrogating him up at the Northwatch Keep. This information was the exact thing I was looking for, I pocketed it and closed the doors behind me as I snuck my way out of the house.

As Avulstein read the letter you could see the emotions running through him as he found out that his brother lived. He stood up yelled "We must go at once to this Keep and save my brother! We can have an army at my call in a minutes notice!" A smile etched across my face, it was time to kill some Thalmor and Imperials. "Avulstein stay here, I will go in and save your brother. You can stay here and if I don't come back in a week then you can assume that I am dead and you come and take the fort and save him." He reluctantly agreed and wished me good luck as I turned towards the door, Atlantea across my back glowing with the desire for blood.

I found myself running towards the stables. I quickly bought a trip to Solitude and jumped in the carriage. As I waited I took the time to clean and sharpen Atlantea, the smile still on my face would last days, and glowing grew brighter and brighter. As we reached Solitude I jumped out and rushed west towards the woods and kept running passing snowberry bushes and elk. I jumped from small hills and ran through creeks. As the Keep came in sight I was startled and attacked by a saber, it clawed at my face and cut through my skin leaving me bleeding and yelling. My anger got the better of me and  I got up and lunged my blade forward, I managed to bring the mighty saber down after a vicious fight, leaving me with a permanent mark on my face. I quickly gutted it, skinned it and patched myself up. Bewildered at the sight of so many Thalmor, it took me a minute to count how many there were. I tryed thinking up a strategy of how to get in and get out before we would be killed. I decided the best way to make sure that Thorald was safe would be if I rushed in and killed everyone in and out of the fort. I stood up from under the brush and took out Atlantea, the excitement was astounding and the rush was enveloping me. I held Atlantea up high and yelled "For CROM!!!" The battle began with me and one simple Thalmor, my blade cut through his armor and killed him before he could even take his weapon out. As I rushed in the rest of the Thalmor were already on their way to kill me at the gate. Six of them came at me and I turned back and headed outside the fort. They surrounded me and my heartbeat as the first two rushed at me, I sent one of them flying with my shout and managed to block the other ones blade. I followed through and cut the Thalmors head off just before another one reached me. He cut my arm and his friend came at me and cut my leg, the blood was everywhere but I wasn't scared this wasn't death this was living. The Cimmerian in me came out as I bashed my sword against the one with his sword in my arm, he stumbled and I cut his leg and then slashed my sword across his chest. I turned towards the other one and swung at his head, he managed to move but still got knicked. This one turned out to be a challenge, he ran at first and then took his bow out and shot me with his arrows leaving some wounds in my chest, luckily missing vital organs, but nonetheless causing more blood loss. I rushed at him at rammed my sword through him, lifting his body off of his feet. Some would call this a suicide mission, but those people aren't Cimmerian, this was simple to me, and the fight lasted only about five minutes.

After going through the bodies for loot I made camp in the middle of the Keep, took the arrows out of my chest and patched my wounds. What ale I had left had to be applied to keeping me drunk for these wounds kept me aching...but the blood loss kept me drinking.

I awoke the following morning surprised that no one came from the fort looking to relieve these dead Thalmor of their posts. I didn't care much but now I was ready to kill some more. I snuck into the Keep and made my way to the interrogation room. Along the way I stealthily killed a few more Thalmor and pocketed treasure I found. The interrogator was in the middle of torturing Thorald when I came into the room, I poisoned him and moved his body before returning to release Thorald. With all the Thalmor dead we easily escaped the Keep and the rescue was over. Thorald told me that he would keep in touch but could not return with me to Whiterun, he told me to tell his mother that he was safe and would come back when the time came. I shook his hand and wished him well, his hands themeselves scarred from the torture he had endured. We parted ways and I made my way back to the carriage in Solitude. The son was rescued, the mother overjoyed and an army of Thalmor left for dead. My wounds heal and my blood keeps flowing, Crom will welcome me with open arms and a throne by his side when the time comes. For now with Atlantea on my back and the war here in Tamriel will keep me on my feet and bloodied.

I'm gonna like this post. Also in summary, you may be the writer and the god of this story, but you are also a slave to the characters you create at the same time. I think you are definitely getting that.

    Yes. much better than before.
Once you get to the end of the chapter, go back and look at your "non-action" scenes. It seems like you had much more fun writing about the fight with the Thalmor then with any other part. It's better written, more desc...  more

Better, still needs picture and more organized paragraphs (and spelling/grammar fixes). Much better though. +1
