The Rogue Elf, Chapter 3: The Journey Begins

  • Hey everybody! I have thought long and hard about this certain story and I will do my best to interpret my thoughts into writing. I hope it comes out as the way I wanted it to! Once again, any criticism is greatly appreciated! Enjoy!

When I awoke from a deep sleep my head throbbed and my stomach groaned. I slowly got out of the bed roll I had fallen asleep on. I tried to take in all that has happened over the past few days, but to no avail. I saw by bow and quiver laying on the wall. I just sat there for a moment before I stood up. I need food, I thought to myself. I looked around the hut but saw no place where food would be stored. I slowly walked outside, and the light from the day burned my eyes. I covered my face with my hand and, after a few seconds, started to take in my surroundings. The shack was small but well camouflaged under the thick branches of the trees above. I looked for the woman I had seen last night but she was nowhere to be found. I went back inside and I grabbed my bow and quiver. If I want food,I guess i'm going to have to get it myself, I thought with annoyance. Someone bringing me a meal would great, but I knew there was no such pleasure at the time. So with those thoughts I knocked an arrow on my bowstring and headed out into the forest.

Finding food wasn't too hard. After about an hour of tracking a deer, only to find it sleeping, I shot an arrow strait into the creatures chest. I walked over to the deer and realized I didn't have anything to skin it with. I certainly wasn't going to drag it all the way back to the shack along the ground, where it would attract more...aggressive animals. I pondered the situation for a moment before an arrow struck a tree, inches from the back of my head. I dove into the brush around me and pulled an arrow. I was sitting for mere seconds before something...no...someone, wrestled me to the ground. I tried to fight back but I was quickly pinned and, feeling a knife to my throat, gave up the fight. I looked at my attacker and saw the elf woman grinning like a madman. To my surprise, she withdrew her knife and helped me to my feet.

"Your reflexes are weak, and slow, I expected more from one such as yourself", she said with no emotion in her tone.

"What was that all about!", I demanded, with a slight anger in my voice, "You scared me half to death!".

"Do you wish to become the hunter or the hunted", she asked, showing some slight annoyance.

"Oh so now you're suddenly the master trainer!", I was enraged to the point of striking her.

"I simply wish to teach you how to properly defend yourself. I would expect you would like to learn how to, after a few measly wolves overpowered you and I had to save your lousy, good-for-nothing, ass!", she retorted now showing large signs of anger and annoyance. That comment was it. I struck her, turned around, and quickly, walked away.

I wandered through the forest, trying to find any signs of the road. I didn't intend to strike her, my temper got the best of me. Maybe I should go back and apologize, I thought, even though I knew that wasn't going to happen. At nightfall I set up a rudimentary camp and a fire. I shot a few rabbits and roasted one over the fire and, after eating part of it, fell asleep on my bed of pine needles. I awoke with a calm presence and then, I looked around. Everything that I hunted, days worth of rabbits, dry wood for fires, large leaves fro shelters, everything, gone. I slowly lay back my head and, gripping the ground beneath me, let a a long howl of rage. I got up and gathered my bow and quiver, which have been mysteriously untouched, leading me to know that it wasn't bandits, and I started off in the same direction I had been traveling before. I stopped to hunt small creatures that I could easily carry with me every hour or so. After long hours of continues walking, I finally reached a road. I saw a sign and walked over to it. The sign had markings of "Solitude" to the left and "Riften" to the right. I thought about it for a quick second before I turned to the right, and started my journey.

I know that this is rather short and does leave some things out but I am still working on length and content, right now it's concept and initial thought.
