Amber's Note Book Chapter Six

  • Chapter Six

As I wonder through the streets of wooden houses and stone paths I flick through my note book.  How did this note book not get damaged?  I play with the pages and try to tare a little of the corner.  It won’t tare, how strange.  Why is it that the carriage and horse are burnt yet this note book isn’t?  I walk over the flames of a lit torch on one of the stone walls surrounding the City.  I hold the note book over the flames.  The note book doesn’t burn.  I hold it over the flames for even longer.  Still the book doesn’t burn.  Amazing, I think to myself this dead mans note book can’t be damaged.  “What ever I write in here will stay here forever.”  I say out loud.  “Or until you are dead.”  An old woman’s voice says behind me.  I turn around quickly to see a short old grey haired lady staring at me.  “I’m sorry, were you talking to me?”  I ask.  “That book you have there dear is an old Nordic book.  It is very rare and the pages only remain written in as long as you are living.  Once you leave this world the writing leaves with you but the book and the empty pages remain.  It can never be destroyed.”  The old lady walks away from me and disappears into a wooden doorway.  I look down at my book, I must make more effort to write about River in here as this is all that is left of my dear friend, soon he will become another person in my life that has come and then gone.

As the stone streets become lighter people begin to fill them.  Shop keepers unlock their doors and people start to swarm around the market stalls.  I notice a huge wooden building along the stone path I’m standing on so I walk closer to it.  It’s an inn so I go inside.  The heat from the burning fire almost knocks me over and straight away I hear a ladies voice shout to a young maid in another room.  “Eira!”  The inn keeper shouts. “We have a customer.”  I take a seat as a young dark haired girl comes rushing over, she must be Eira.  “What would you like miss, food or drink?”  She says to me while wiping her hands on her apron.  “Just some water and bread please.”  I answer, then ask.  “Is that the owner?”  I point to a large lady poking the fire.  “Y..yes.”  Eira answers and then hurries off into the kitchen.  The large lady walks up to me.

“Hi traveller, we’ve heard all about you.”  She smiles high lighting her chubby red cheeks.  “Me?”  I ask surprised.

“Word gets about round ‘ere m’love.  Rescued from a blazing carriage, taken to the healing temple and as soon as you’ve on your feet you see to the sick.  You’re like a saint of Whiterun.”  Eira then returns to my table with water and bread.

“What’s this?  No, no we won’t be having this.  Eira get this saint some spiced warm wine and beef soup.”  Eira quickly disappears off again.

“That’s very kind but..”  I stutter.

“Don’t worry about coin here m’love the Companions have taken care of your bill and board.”  The lady smiles.  “My name is Gersemi and that little flower is Eira, anything you want just ask.”

“I’m sorry you must think I’m someone else.”  I say trying to make sense of everything.  Eira returns with wine and soup, places it in front of me and again quickly wonders off.

“After you finish your meal Eira will show you to your room, it’s all clean and dusted.”

    “Thank you, but.”

“Now eat up, I’ll leave you alone to eat.”  Gersemi walks away leaving me still confused.

I still eat my meal and finish my wine and as I’m wiping my mouth with a white cloth I notice two huge men walk into the inn and look straight at me.  I look away quickly hoping we don’t make eye contact but before I have chance to do so they catch my glace and both walk towards me.  I’m dead, I think to myself.  “Amber?”  One of the huge men says to me.  I swallow hard.  “Yes.”  I answer.  “It’s good to see you looking so well.”  The huge man smiles down at me.  “Can I join you?”  I don’t answer I just hold out my hand and point to a chair opposite me.  The other huge man walks away and starts to talk to Gersemi.

I stare at this huge man in front of me after he’s sat down.  He was Nordic like me, the same dark hair and pale skin.  His hair sat neatly on top of his shoulders and his eye’s were a strange greyish colour.  “So you’re the one who rescued me?”  I ask.  “We all did.”  His deep voice answered.

“Why are you paying for my stay?”

“Because we want you to stay Amber.”

“Why?”  I put down my spoon and drink more wine.

The Nordic sits back and struggles to answer.  “I’m Farkas but people call me Roar.”  He finally says.

“You’ve not answering my question, why do you want me to stay?”  I start to get annoyed.

“I can’t tell you yet Amber.”  Roar smiles.

“Well then you won’t mind if I leave then.”  I make a movement as if I’m about to stand up.  Roar panic’s and grabs my arm.  “No don’t.”

“Then answer my question, why do you wish for me to stay?”  I stare into Roars eyes and watch him struggle to answer me.  He then looks round the inn leans towards me and whispers.  “I can’t tell you here, come with us and I’ll tell you what you need to know.”
