Amber's Note Book Chapter Four

  • As the morning starts to turn into mid day more people start to come into the inn.  My wine is no longer making me feel as happy and Windhelms problems start to race around my aching head.  We’ve been sat in silence for some time now which gave me the opportunity to write in my note book while River dosed off for a bit.  River is starting to look as depressed as I felt.  “You know what we shall do River?”  I say trying to stay positive and waking him up.  “We should travel to Solitude together and get you in that college.”  I expected River to at least lighten up when I said this but instead he answered.  “And how will we travel to Solitude, do you know how far it is?”  I thought for a moment.  “We will go by carriage as I know one that waits near the stables for travellers like us.”  “Travellers like us?”  River smiled sarcastically, but at least he smiled.  “But dear Amber you forget you need coin and we drank your coin through the night.”  Damn he was right; my coin purse is completely empty.  I slumped back in my chair; I don’t even have enough coin for a bed tonight or any other night.  We should have stayed in that cave.  I sulked for a while fiddling with my necklace and then I smiled.

“River, I need you to go and find that man with the carriage and make sure he waits for me.  I’m sure he’ll be around the stables.”  I say while looking round.

“Why what are you going to do?”

“That’s not important right now just go and wait for me.”  I hand him all our things.  “Go on hurry.”  I watch River shake his head at me and leave through the main entrance.  Then I slowly look round the inn looking for my target.

There’s three men laughing and joking round a small table closest to me.  In the far corner an old man is drinking alone and slicing an apple.  This won’t do I need a thug if my plan is going to work and then he enters.  SLAM!!!  The thug bangs his heavy fist on the bar and spits out an order of drink and food at the maid.  I watch with hunters eyes as he settles next to me.  This is too easy.  “Hello sir.”  I say.  “I would offer you some of my wine but sadly I’ve just finished the very last drop.  Pity you weren’t in a little earlier.”  The thug throws his rather large and full coin purse onto the table in front of him.  I tried to focus on the purse but couldn’t help getting distracted by his huge gut.  The buttons on his filthy shirt were trying with all their might to remain closed and his thick black chest hair was showing through each gap.  “What are you drinking me dear?”  He smiles showing all his yellow teeth.  This thug does certainly not want a noble lady tonight.  “I’ll have what ever is the strongest on the menu.  Apart from Mead, I can’t have Mead as it makes me wake up in the worst places.”  I pretend to chuckle.  “Maid!!!  I’ll have a bottle of Mead with that order!”  The thug turns and smiles at me.  I pretend to blush.

While I’m pretending that I’m going to give this thug the best night with a female he’s ever had River is waiting at the stable trying to convince a man with a carriage that his wife will be along shortly with coin.  Luckily the man doesn’t care and starts to prepare his horse for a long journey to Solitude.  Then in the distance River sees me running towards him shouting and waving my arms.

“Go.”  I scream while waving my arms.  “She’s here.”  River says to the man.  The man looks up.  “She’s your wife?”  “Yes I’m a lucky Orc.”  The man jumps on to his seat and waits for further instruction and most probably coin.  River gives me a typical fake were a happy couple hug and then says.  “Hello my darling, ready for our long journey?”  I grab River by his wrists and beg. “Hide me.”  But as he is too slow I jump onto the carriage and hide underneath some old sacks.  Both the man and River look at each other in confusion but say nothing.  River climbs onto the carriage and leaves me in my hiding place.  We all set off for Solitude.  Then just as I was about to come out from my hiding place three men jump out in front of the carriage startling the horse.

Two of the men were guards and the other was the thug from the inn.  One of the guards spoke to River first.  “Have you seen a woman pass through here?”  Luckily the man and River both shook their heads.  “She has long black hair.”  Says the guard. “And now has my money.”  The thug spat.  “Was she beautiful?”  River asked.  “Yes.”  The thug replied.  “Well sadly I can’t help you Mr.”  River says loudly for me to hear.  “As no beautiful woman has past through here.  In fact I haven’t seen one for many years now.”  One of the guards nods to the man on the carriage and we start to move away from the three of them.

We are travelling for some time before River shouts to me.  “You can come out of hiding now.”  The first thing I do is hit River in the arm and then thank the carriage man for keeping his mouth shut and I pay him double with the stolen coins.  I then hand River half of what ever is left and put the other half in my own coin purse.  I throw the stolen empty purse onto the road behind us.  “Not seen a beautiful women indeed.”  I say hitting River in the arm for a second time.  I then lean onto Rivers left side of his body and close my eyes.

“That’s why you ran away from here in the first place isn’t it?”  River asks.  “Yes.”  I whisper.  “But for now let me sleep.”  “You are going to be one pain in my arse again aren’t you Amber?”  But I don’t hear him as I’m already asleep.

Excellent turn of events with a bit of excitement thrown in.  It is interesting that these two perfect strangers have now decided to throw their lots together.  But you have let enough character detail drop that these two find a refuge in each other, and ...  more

Again. I agree with everyone else. This is eazy breezy storytelling and yeah I really like your flow too. I think the word to describe this is charming.
Also, your dialogue is reminding me of the John Steinbeck novels we had to read in middle school...  more

You're right - humor is what you do best! The tale is very easy to read, always light and interesting. The chemistry between Amber and River really works - her easiness agains his intensity - being a great source of misunderstandings and jokes. Good work....  more

I really like this pairing and they are already working well together. I love the "I'm a lucky Orc" line it makes me think Amber is a raven haired beauty. What mischief and coin purses is she going to "acquire" once they reach Solitude I wonder. Great wor...  more
