Amber's Note Book

  • Thud, thud.

I’m woken by hearing bangs on my door.  I have no time to put on my shoes and walk across the cold wooden floor shivering.  Windhelm this time of year is always cold well colder and anyone who lives here should be used to the cold.  But yet I happen to be shivering not from the cold but from the dread of who’s on the other side of this door.

“Come on, we know your in there.”  Says a low deep angry voice.  Then like lightning I remember.  I remember who it is and what he wants.  Shit I’m so stupid, what was I thinking?  My friends warned me one day I’ll con the wrong guy for money and that someone will demand back their money or find where I live and demand what I promised them.  The very thought of what I promised them makes me quiver with sickness and fear.  I’ve got to get out of here.

With no time for second thoughts I grab the warmest clothes I own and a few coins from last night and head for my escape route through the back window.  Luckily the snow is so heavy falling from the sky it would be difficult to see or hear me running through these streets.  I run for what feels like days in the cold wet thick snow, away from my home.  I just need to hide for a few days then I’ll return and he won’t remember me.  The wind isn’t as strong now but my clothes are wet and heavy.  I see a cave in the distance and head over to it not caring on what I find in there.  I just need to rest.

As soon as I’m in the mouth of the cave I smell a strong scent of rotting meat.  Still it doesn’t put me off entering it.  Then I notice someone asleep, I stand perfectly still and wait to see if they’ve seen me.  They don’t move.  I still remain still and wait for my eyes to get used to the darkness.  Is that someone asleep or dead?  It would explain the smell.  Still no movement, I creep closer to it waiting for them to jump up and attack me.  But they don’t this person is dead.

My nord survival instinct kicks in.  I loot the body for coins and dry clothing.  The fur boots are a little big but better then what I’m wearing, at least they are dry.  The dead body can keep his other clothes but I’ll take his dagger and axe.

I wonder even further to the back of the cave.  There’s a cook pot on an old fire place, quickly I build a fire.  Thanks to my late fathers education it doesn’t take me long.  I strip off my clothing and dry them by the fire.  I’m so hungry but I’ll have to wait till morning before I look for food.

As my clothes are slowly drying by the fire I walk across to the dead body and search around it for anything else I may find useful.  An empty note book is all I find.  I then settle next to the fire and while relaxing I listen to the crackle of the logs burning away and begin to write in the dead mans note book.

The next morning I’m woken up by a little sound of something moving.  It’s too small to be anything of any threat to me so I just lay still and wait for this creature to show itself.  The fire has completely gone out now and I notice I’m still naked.  The scuffling sound gets closer and I still remain silent.  Then I see a tiny nose and little ears.  A rabbit!  Keeping my eyes on this rabbit soon to be my breakfast I feel around for the dead mans axe.  Got it.  Then without moving any other part of my body I take one big almighty swing and crunch I chop this poor wondering rabbit in half.

In no time at all I’m skinning and cooking while thinking of my father and how he used to say.  “If you’re a daughter of Skyrim you need to learn to live off your land.”  I listened to every word and now here I am.

As I eat my breakfast I hear what sounds like a battle in the distance.  I know I should put out the fire but I grab my clothes instead and quickly put them on.  I can’t help but groan as I feel their warmth over my cold skin.  I slowly creep towards the mouth of the cave making sure I’m out of site.

There is a small battle going on but too far away for anyone to notice me.  Who are they?  As my eyes get used to the day light I then realise they are imperial legions battling with the stormcloaks.  The stormcloaks are completely out numbered.  I watch in horror as these poor men get beaten and then tied together and thrown onto a cart.  I wait quietly for the cart to leave but my silence is broken by a foot step behind me and before I have a chance to turn around, someone or something hits me hard on the back of my head.  Everything goes dark after that.

Your writing style is very loose (like someone just starting out ... maybe) but I really like it. I agree with the other commentors. Your doing first person pretty well and now for chapter 2...

A great introduction to the character I instantly like her. The way you have written it you reveal just enough info to grab my attention. What did she do to the man to warrant her running from her home? Great descriptions and enough to fill out the world ...  more

You have certainly dropped a lot of interesting lines from this character, such as mentioning her father a couple of times, her friends have warned her about conning the wrong people.  She does not seem like she in alone, even though she is a swindler.  Y...  more

I don't think someone has ever blogged on a swindler character on this site before. It's aways an interesting character, because they are not inclined to choose absolute good or evil, or to solve their problems only by resorting to violence. If you can, y...  more
