How Skyrim's stellar sales can be broken down.

  • Earlier todayI reported on the awesome news that Skyrim is selling like hotcakes.

But wouldn't it be interesting to know how those 3.4 million units can be broken down by platform? Well, wonder no longer my friends - because I have those figures to hand.

Perhaps now we can see why there was such an emphasis on the XBox in the run up to the game release, and why many console-friendly features - such as the UI - were put into the game.

Or you could argue that opposite, and say that the reason that PC sales took such a small sector of the market was because the game seems to be quite heavily geared to the consoles.

I think its the former, to be honest. It might be 5 year old technology, but the user base for XBox is now absolutely massive, whilst PC continues to decline as a gaming platform.

But we've still got the mods on PC

Paul, I don't think this is necessarily an indication of the PC in "decline as a gaming platform".  For one thing, I'd wager that a good amount of PC copies were obtained through digital distribution, the most popular platform for which is Steam.  That sa...  more

But we PC players get the miracle known as mods!  Basically, the game will be fresh forever!

people with a console have a pc too, if you add that cost ( from an average pc) to the one from a console you have spend as much money as you would on a decent gaming pc. Plus console games are usually a lot more expensive and can't be modded, and they al...  more

I have read the same about digital copies not being counted.  That would include Steam and Direct2Drive.  I am willing to bet that were a large number of purchases there since D2D was offering the game for $54.

Its sad that the PC sells so little. Maybe people finally got around and picked up a cheaper console then a pc which is more expensive for gaming. But you do get alot of other things with a PC.
That and im getting sick of all the ports. Some games a...  more

The PC doesn't continue to decline. Developers continue to develop games for a console then port them to the PC. This not only inevitably leads to poor UI control, but also drives some PC users away. I admit, while I think improved over Oblivion, Skyrims'...  more

considering that there are more than twice as many xbox360 owners, the difference between xbox and ps3 is actually in ps3's favor. I'm surprised how low xbox is to be honest. they like shoved the propaganda up the butt on that one,

Steam announced on Saturday (I think) that users peaked at around 250,000 at one time.  But that's only the peak - there are more than that owning the game through Steam.
I mention this because, as Kevin pointed out, Steam has its own set of numbers...  more

I also find that it was heavily marketed for x-box with several commercials not mentioning the ps3 or pc as an option. I have a friend who was aware of the game, but did not know she could play it on her ps3 until I told her. So, I blame poor advertising ...  more

the reason pc isnt selling as much as xbox is because most people dont have or dont want to buy a computer that can run the game without having at crash every 5 seconds.
