The Weekend Roundtable: Let's talk about stealth

  • In the final run-up to the release of Skyrim our 'Weekend Roundtable' is going through the three main character archetypes, and offering a free-form discussion on each. Last week we looked at all things magic - and it was a fascinating and enlightening conversation.

This time around we turn the spotlight on stealth.

First of all we have a brand new poll, which asks you which of the six skills which fall into the stealth set you are looking forward to most when you get to play the game. So please take a second to nip over there and cast your vote!

Soooo. what do we know about stealth? Well, right from the earliest reveals about Skyrim we have been repeatedly told that a lot more attention had been given to improving and honing the thief / sneak gameplay in this new game. For a start they've revealed some enticing looking perks, especially in pickpocket and speech. They've dumped the hated lock pick mini-game from Oblivion in favour of something much more akin toFallout 3.  And they've given us (very brief) glimpses of stealth kills.

We also have been assured that there will be Dragon Shouts that are particularly geared to the stealth character. One is rumoured to place you behind the enemy, in a perfect place to deliver the backstab shot. Beyond that we don't know much about Stealth Shouts, so feel free to speculate.

Then there is the decision to shift Alchemy into the Stealth skill set, and nominate it as the designated 'Crafting' skill. How do you intend to use alchemy for your thief player?

So many options present themselves? And we haven't mentioned what we expect from the light armour, or the daggers that we hope to collect. And what about artifacts for the budding sneak character?

Have you got a stealth character mapped out? What are looking at build-wise? Khajiit? Bosmer? Or perhaps something a bit more off-beam? Perhaps making a hulking, muscle bound Nord thief, just for the challenge? Tell us your sneak character ideas here.

So, here is the thread to talk about all things thief and stealth....

I love sneak, I always end up training in it, no matter what kind of character I start out with. One of my favorite things to do in Oblivion is to go into forts and jump up in down in front of bandits after getting my sneak skill up to 100. I know it's no...  more

I think sneak marksman will be quite overpowered now
on Oblivion I remember sneaking round with a bow 1-shotting ALL the things, my favourite kill was a bandit I saw on the road as a tiny little dot, I aimed the bow at him, then raised it so the arr...  more

By now most of you know my first character is a stealth character, female, Khajiit, thief.  She will join the thieves guild as soon as possible.  First I will go for stealth skills but do intend to use alchemy especially she won't have much in magic.  Aft...  more

Although my first character will not be a sneak (as the name suggests) I do plan on making one. My second character will be a bosmer proficient in bows and one-handed weapons in the form of daggers. As well as Alchemy for poisoning my arrows and making po...  more

Well, my first and second playthroughs are definitely going to be melee oriented characters. But, since it appears that stealth has been remastered, I'm definitely going to play as an Argonian assassin, possible 3rd playthrough.
    As for which stealth...  more

More people are going to use stealth this time around, I think.  With the damage multipliers for daggers and a higher damage bow, it's going to be awesome.

I'm really looking forward to building a stealth-based character in Skyrim. The stealth-based Dragon Shouts will be very convenient to me, and I'm sure my dagger with be equally thrilled about it.
