The Weekend Roundtable: Let's talk about Elder Scrolls Online

  • OK, its time to talk together about The Elder Scrolls Online? For one thing we need to decide whether this game will be covered extensively (by which I mean actively seeking out content, rather than just allowing members to mention it).

For this reason I am going to start a poll - today, rather than Monday, which will run for a bit longer than usual. And I'd like every single person to vote on it - even if you never post a single thing on the site normally. Yes, I'm talking to the 80% of the people who lurk on the site - this is YOUR site as well, and I need to know what people think about The Elder Scrolls Online.

Firstly to explain my own thinking a bit. I'm NOT a great aficionado of MMO games. Like most people I got sucked into World of Warcraft when it first came out and - I'll admit - I became mildly obsessed for a few months. But eventually I grew tired of it, and went back to my first love, which is single-player games. I've got some attraction towards Guild Wars 2 but apart from that (and I've not taken the plunge yet) I've ignored all MMO's since about the middle of 2005.

So I'm coming to this as a bit of a noob. When people start going on about 'rezzing', 'instances' and 'mobs' my eyes tend to glaze over! It's not helped either by the fact that all the initial announcements about ESO happened over the Summer when I had a lot of family stuff going on and I just didn't feel like getting into it all. As a result, I had to spend a good deal of time yesterday in trying to get up to speed with what we know so far about this game.

And, you know what, now that I've educated myself about The Elder Scrolls Online I'm pretty excited about it all. For one thing, it seems like they are addressing some of the key problems that eventually make me tired of WoW. Now, I know what you'll say - talk is cheap. Every MMO doubtless claims to be the 'WoW killer'. We will have to see whether the bold claims coming out of Zenimax just this week will turn into reality....

For example I was interested to read that there will be a single player story at the heart of The Elder Scrolls Online. I liked the idea that what you do in the world slowly changes the world (my persistent bugear with WoW where nothing ever seemed to make a blind bit of difference to anything).

But I must admit that the main reason I am excited for ESO is this..... its freakin' Elder Scolls

I mean...come on people... who cannot fail to be excited by being able to visit Elsweyr? Or go back and visit Vvardenfell? And even confirmed single player dudes like me are surely excited by the prospect of teaming up their Khajiit rogue with an Orc tank, an Altmer priest and a Bosmer Archer to go and visit the Summerset Isles.....

So my questions to get us started are these?

How excited are you to have the prospect of The Elder Scrolls Online coming along in 2013?

Do you think that this site should actively seek to cover and become engaged with ESO?

What sort of content would you like over coming months (assuming you don't want us to totally ignore the game...)?

Would you be interested in this site becoming the home of a player Guild (or Guilds for that matter) where like minded players could band together?

Let me know your thoughts....whether on this blog post, or via the poll

I think the only really un-TES thing about this is the Faction system. It should all be guild based faction PVP. Or rather, the Canonical faction is maybe just what your lumped into when you create your character, but then later can do a small quest to de...  more

Lets hope so alduin, although for me (and I just found out about the races)...
Thats already an example of mmorpg game mechanics encroaching on what makes TES... TES.
They should go with a system that allows the proper diversity of the TES ser...  more

I too wish not to be disappointed. But I intend not to get excited about this game breaking the MMO box until I play it myself and will continue to assume that it really doesn't break any new ground.
One of the major appeals for me is simply gawking...  more

All the guys who played the alpha version over at Zenimax all say that it still feels like a real Elder Scrolls game, and from what I gather it really is. Call me stubborn or something, but I really believe this one is going to be awesome, I can forgive s...  more

Aye, when you had enough sensical players it was magical.
I played at launch, so luckily, most of the nonsensical idiots where still rerolling flavour of the day classes whilst we got to enjoy our pvp :P
But your post right there could be what...  more

Perhaps i'm a bit strong in my use of the word censorship, on re-reading it seems to be more of a *this info will be here regardless, should I go out of my way to publish it and accomodate it, or should we just let what comes up come up.*

On Topic however, as I forgot to mention this in my original post...

I think the whole vote is appalling really.
I can understand the reasoning behind it, but in practice, forbidding people to speak about an aspect of the universe this...  more

I find myself torn in regards to this particular subject.
I consider myself an mmo buff. I've played high end in multiple mmo games.
But my true love is single player games... (well, my true "gaming" love).

Now on paper, an elder...  more

I'm not a particular fan of MMOs, and I'm leery of this one, even though it seems to be making more reliable promises than previous MMOs. I don't mind if there are discussions for it. Arguing against being allowed to talk about the new MMO is like arguing...  more

This should be an MMO everyone can enjoy, you can do near everything solo if you want too, they made the main quest of it so that you can do everything on your own. You don't need to join in raids or participate in the war if you don't want. You can alway...  more
