Character Backstory: Larthjar

  • Larthjar Beltor was born a proud Nord in the small town of Sunguard, Skyrim. At a young age the Empire army came to his village and forced him in to service. For many years he witnessed the corrupt actions of his unit commander, an Imperial by the name of Lurio Catiotus. As Larthjar unwilingly pillaged and raided small settlements throughout southern Skyrim and northern Cyrodil his rage slowly build up. When the time came that his commander ordered an attack on his hometown, Larthjar couldn´t hold back any longer.

While his unit was camped up on a mountainside the night before the attack, Larthjar snuck out of his tent. He slowly moved to the commanders tent and was faced with two men guarding the tent, one of them was his good friend and fellow Nord Torbern. The other was Lurio Catiolus right-hand man Antus. Larthjar knew he would never get a chance to slit the filthy Imperials throat with the two men guarding the tent. Reluctant of killing his friend Torbern, Larthjar moved up behind Antus, slowly pulling out his dagger.

In a split second Larthjar cut Antus throat. Torbern reacted hastily and pulled his blade. When he saw it was Larthjar who killed Antus he was stumbled. "Lartjar, what in Azura's name are you doing?!", he whispered stressfully. Larthjar wiped the blood of his dagger and turned to Torbern. "We cannot allow these Imperial filth to destroy our homeland any longer, we have already spilled so much of our brothers blood, it is enough. I am putting and end to it.", he said. "You either with me or against me, old friend." Torbern was shocked. He looked puzzled from the body of the now dead Imperial Antus to the grim and determined face of his best friend. "Okay, I'm with you, what is your plan?", he said. Larthjar was silent for a brief moment. "We kill Catiotus and hopefully the unit will retreat to the Imperial City for orders, if not, we'll take it from there. Either way, these men are not burning down my home town". "Are you insane?", Torbern said, "We need a solid plan before we strike!". "Don't you understand? The moment I cut Antus throat I crossed the line, I can't go back now! You wait here and stay on lookout. I'm going in to kill Catiolus." With those words Larthjar went into the commanders tent.

Once inside Larthjar waited a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He moved silently to Catiolus bedroll and pulled away the fur his commander was sleeping under. He was shocked. The only thing under the fur was Catiolus armor. Larhtjar looked around and noticed a big cut in the tents back wall. Catiolus must have overheard him and Torbern and snuck out. "Come out, you filthy Nord!", a cold voice shouted from outside the tent. Torbern knew his cover was blown, he would have to face Catiolus head on.

He walked out of the tent and saw Catiolus holding a blade to Torberns throat. "Let him go. Now.", Larthjar said. The Imperial laughed Larthjar in the face, "Do you really think I am going to let you get away with this?", he shouted. "You kill one of my men, you sneak in to my tent in the middle of the night and try to murder me?! You're a dead man! And so is your disgusting little friend." Catiolus cut Torberns throat and pushed him away. Torbern was bled out of the mountainside and was dead within a couple of seconds.

Larthjar threw himself forward, determined to kill Catiolus with his bare hands. He did not notice the two Imperial soldiers hiding behind the tent untill it was too late. They grabbed him and pulled him down, Larthjar struggled with all his might but he was pinned to the ground. The soldiers beat Larthjar across his body. One of them puled out a dagger and slashed Larthjar across the face, cutting Larthjars right eye out. Larthjar screamed at the top of his lungs. "You will never take Skyrim! I will destroy every last one of you if it is the last thing I do!" Catiolus slowly walked towards him. "I am going to make an example of you Nord. I will cut of your head and show it to your barbaric people as a sign that their rebellious days are numbered! The Emipre will regains it glorious days! The Sons of Skyrim will bow down to the might of the Empire!", Catiolus shouted. He kicked Larthjar in the head with his boot, knocking Larthjar out.

When Larthjar woke up he was locked up in a cold dungeon cell...

Good backstory! Really gives a different perspective to view the game from. And that's what backstories are for.

I figured being betrayed by the Legion would be a nice motivator to join the Stormcloaks... but of course you could join the Legion as well. Your backstory could be that your great-great-grandfather was the Champion of Cyrodil and that your character trie...  more
