The Little Things..........

  • With Skyrim proudly getting the no. 1 spot over xmas and more and more people talking about how good the experience is i though i'd share a few of the smaller things that makes Skyrim awesome to me.

I think my favorite addition to Skyrim over the other TES games is the additions to the combat. Dual wielding was a vital component missing and greatly appreciated new addition. But i found the most excitement comes from the new finishing moves or critical kills that seem to randomly happen in combat. Combined with the endless fun of shouting enemies off high places to watch them somersault to their deaths the combat is exciting and brilliant fun once you get your character a bit higher up in level.

The other day whilst entering a nord ruin i was ambushed by a few draugr deathlords. Understanding how best to deal with them i slew a couple in quick time with a barrage of magic and arrows leaving one high up on the stairs. I flanked him and unlenting forced him off the top to my sheer amusement for him to only go and survive the fall and start to get to his feet. This i was not happy about so leapt off towards the deathlord landing at his feeting killing him in one fluid motion care of one of those fantastic kill animations. My joy was audible :)

Another aspect of Skyrim is its sheer scale. The views, waterfalls, flora and fauna make a very imersive and distracting environment to just move through never mind survive and adventure. One of Skyrims inhabitants has shattered that illusion endlessly for me resulting in a frantic spin round with the drawing of sword and shield and a raising of the pulse -  the humble grunting fox.

My ears seem attuned to the harmless creatures sounds but my first reaction is always to draw my weapon and look round for the impending sabre tooth cat attack only to find im a big girls blouse that has jumped at the first harmless creature to cross my path.

Away from the massive outdoor spaces are the dungeons and ruins of skyrim. These as with everything else seem to have been upgraded, no dungeon or ruin seems to be the same. With unique features and puzzles in most. The most fun ive had in these new areas though has been with a simple mechanic - fire. The oily patches on floors and half broken oil lamps that can be knocked down to explode have brought me endless fun to the point where i will look at the ground first to see if i get to backdraft the whole tunnel/room and take out loads of smelly draugr.

These are just a few of the small things that make skyrim what it is for me feel free to add your own little quirks and features the more the merrier.

One thing is the great feeling of progression you get towards the end. I remember at around level 30 (on my first character, a Paladin) struggling to take down a Deathlord, and crossing paths with the Dragon Priest at Shearpoint a couple of times earlier ...  more
