Roleplayer or Button Basher?

  • Im quite new to the whole blogging thing and this is one of the first games where i have actually got involved in the wider community by coming on sites like this one (Top job Paul by the way).

One of the biggest things that has leapt out at me is just how differently people are playing this game.

There are the ones like myself that have experience playing other role play games from table top games like advanced dungeons and dragons, merp, vampire masquerade to the array of other rpg titles available for console and pc. Developing a character with a back story and ethos to find that they dont fit in and them then evolving into something else. Allowing the character to naturally develop rather than finding the instances where you can boost skills in an hour. Walking through the world and going with the flow of what gets thrown at you.

Then there are the ones that seem to just play the game to say they have played it. Not connecting with their character and them literally being used as a one hit wonder machine they use to flash through main quests and storylines.

Now thats all fair and good, its the beauty of games like this and Bethesda have pushed the bar even further this time round with skyrim allowing you to play the game how you want to. My game so far has been like a 190hr long Lord of the rings epic and i cant help but feel like people are missing out on the one of the main features of a game like this the immersion in another world.

I could write a story of the adventures ive had with low points (losing my first companion, losing shadowmere to a ancient dragon) to high points (discovering a beautiful location, taking on more than you thought, finding a magical item, satisfaction of surviving an epic dungeon or cave).

Thats were i get my satisfaction and moneys worth from a game like this and would love to hear from somebody that does just play it through to see what they get from it?

I admit to focusing on the RPG aspect also, which is why I still know there is much un-mined depth in the game and I will have to create new characters to uncover those stories.  Yet if I play an FPS game, I still find myself creating in my mind a story, ...  more

Nice post mate, i confess to being a bit of a "stat-hound" as vix puts it. I love finding different ways to create an advantage for my character. But there is no doubt in my mind that the most enjoyable way to play the game is to just get on with things a...  more
