Class Discussion: Ranger, Level 25 and the future

  • I've reached level 25 with Sindathiel without playing the main quest. I haven't even completed the Golden Claw quest as I just wanted to have dragons but no Dragonborn. Most of my time has been spent wondering around, exploring and completing whatever quests I can find that would suit my character. I joined the Companions a few levels ago and became a Werewolf which was a hard choice but with Bosmer lore it makes sense with the Wild Hunt. The Thalmor and Forsworn are my main enemies along with bandits and anything that poses a threat in the wilderness. The Silver Hand seem like a more logical choice for a Ranger to join but unfortunately that is impossible. The Companions, regardless of the gift, protect Skyrim which is fundamentally what a Ranger does. Regarding the curse / gift all I have to say is Exitus Acta Probat.

I've put most of my points into archery, sneak and one handed while getting the basics with illusion, restoration, block and light armor. Bosmer are considered the best archers in Tamriel and it was only right that I give my character the quick shot perk. I wish you could eventually wield the bow with Legolas like speed but hopefully a mod will come along that allows that. Obviously my builds biggest strengths are sneak and ranged attacks with the bow with a decent capability with dual wielding. Illusion and restoration come in handy depending on the situation but I use them as utility. I rely on potions in combat but healing spells go along with ranger lore and are vital out of combat, when I run out of potions or as a last resort. Fury (Illusion) has saved my arse plenty of times and has made things easier without having to get directly involved in a fight. Calm allows me to avoid fights that I don't want but I need to put more points into it. My biggest downside is that I can't stand toe-to-toe with a 2H Beserker type enemy without dodging or getting the drop on him. Three or more opponents in melee pretty much mean I'm screwed. I have the most trouble in dungeons with close quarters but out in the open I have the advantage. I can pick off three or four opponents easily from range before they know I'm there.

    Advantages:

    Ranged Attacks

    Stealth

Speed (Once I get higher levels of light armor and with dual wielding)

    Poisons + resistances

    Healing

    Disadvantages:

    Defense

Few Spells (I only use Healing, Calm, Fear, Muffle, Detect Life and Midas Entangle.)

    Melee Damage

I'm thinking that I should get the light armor perks Unhindered and Wind Walker as soon as possible and possibly trying out blocking with a one handed weapon even though that may not be worth it. I could use more lockpicking perks to make looting easier along with alchemy so I can use more effective poisons. I'm stable enough with stealth and archery minus one or two perks that would be good and I won't be putting any more points into the magic side of things except for Illusion dual casting and the ability to use spells on higher level animals / enemies. The biggest thing missing is the fact that I can't have a animal companion. A wolf (Levels 5-20) or a bear / sabertooth (higher levels) would make things so much easier in combat. I almost always play solo as I can't see Sindathiel having a non-Ranger follow him around and that they usually die the few times I've tried.

What armour are you wearing? I've made a Strider from LoTR type build, I've got him wearing the vampire armor from dawnguard but i'm wondering if there's something better. Try a Dog follower?

Also I love slow time but it would be awesome to have a faster quick shot perk with the bow instead of just a 30% increase. 40-60% possibly.

I know I saw the Dunedain Ranger build and it's pretty much the same as mine minus heavy armor / two handed. Am I supposed to be writing all this stuff on my blog and the forum or just on the blog page?

Using the slow time shout can give you that legolas-like accuracy! Also, WTF! Get yourself over to character building mate!!
