Custom Lore: Distances

  • Before the Inquisition come for me I want to discuss the changes and alterations I'm using in my fluff. This is purely for my stories. After having my crack team of helper monkeys look at information from Tolkien's work, flinging poop and a couple thousand Skyrim maps that are now ruined, I've come up with some rough guesses about distance. Whiterun to Riverwood is around 200 miles, Riverwood to Falkreath is around 300, and Rorikstead to Ivarstead is close to 800+ miles. I want to convey the fact that Skyrim is massive. Riverwood is tucked between the Throat of the World and Bleak Falls, surrounded by thick pine forests and hills. It's population is around 500-600 depending on the season and serves as a outpost, village, trade center and waypoint for the area. It would take a day or two of travel via carriage, with only a few quick stops, on the main road to get to Riverwood from Whiterun. The main road is well traveled and cuts through the massive forest that begins south of the Western Watchtower. Hundreds of small roads, hidden routes, paths, trails, etc. cut through the forest also but it will take Sindathiel days to move the same distance because of the terrain.

To the south of Riverwood the terrain becomes flatter but the forest is always there. The Evergreen River flows into the Evergreen Lake north of Falkreath where a small fishing community, ruins, a guardian stone and wilderness are. Fishers, hunters, trappers and bandits are most common in the area along with travelers headed either north or south mostly. It's not as wild and thick as the forests surrounding Riverwood but it's still very much the wilderness. Ancient tombs in the mountains to the north have hordes of the undead, wild beasts grow stronger by some kind of force, Falmer have started to attack the surface here and in Falkreath and groups of bandits are pillaging, harassing and attacking the peoples of the region. It's definitely busy.

If anyone else has done some fluff on distances or this seems unreasonable let me know. This is essentially my vision of Skyrim and this particular area.
