Namund the alchemist Journal 1: The cave

  • As I sat stood there in that cold cave, I fell into despair. How could I, an unarmed alchemist, face battle hardened legion soldiers? I opened my satchel and looked at its contents. There was a few insect parts, a shriveled mushroom, an empty bottle and some of the poison I had brewed the previous night. My hand reached to the poison. I uncorked it. If I had to die today, I would do it like a true alchemist. I hesitated. Was I not a Nord? Was I not yearning for Sovnegarde? I put the bottle away. I recalled the words of my mentor "Where a warrior needs his strength, armor and blade, an alchemist needs only his mind" I adhered to his advice and cleared my mind. For the first time I had a good look at the cavern I was in. To my surprise, I saw a dead man with rags and a bow, as well as a knapsack lying next to him. I walked over. I had no skill with a bow, so that was not an option. I opened his sack and, to my surprise, I saw that it was filled with a powdery substance. I smelled it. Vampire dust. I opened my satchel and started to sort through the insect parts. I just hoped that I still had it... There it was. A luna moth wing. I could know hear voices at the entrance of the cave. I had to hurry. I took out my mortar and pestle and started to grind the vampire dust and the moth wing into a fine powder. When I was done, I mixed it with some water and threw it into the empty bottle. It was a rudimentary invisibility potion, but it would work. Then I switched to the next part of my plan. I took of my robes and exchanged it for the man's rags. I shoved one his arrows into his back. I moved to a dark corner in the cave. I waited for an eternity, but finally I saw the torch light casting shadows against the cave wall. I hastily drank the potion and slowly began to move towards the next cavern, to freedom. There were now three soldiers inside the cavern. The moved over to the dead man, now clothed in my robes. "We got him in the back" Another soldier chortled "His potions did him no good now, damn alchemist" I chuckled as I left the room, as it was my very potions that were helping me to escape. When I was out of the first cavern, I sprinted through the cave to the entrance. It was only a few more steps in front of me when two soldiers stepped into the cave. It was at this exact moment that the effects of my potion wore of. I did not know who was more surprised, me or them. I was defenseless, facing two soldiers. After about four seconds of staring, one of them drew his sword and hit me over the head with the hilt. Everything became dark and I lapsed into unconsciousness

It is refreshing to read someone escaping (well, almost escaping) by the use of their wits and not their brawn.  Very believable character...he is not a super hero, but doing the best with what he has.  Looking forward to more!
