Lutherus Sotasius - Chapter I, Part IV

  • THE BOSMER IN RIVERWOOD

From the Journal of Lutherus Sotasius. Date of Entry: Last Seed, 17th, 4E, 201.

Exiting Jorrvaskr, Lutherus planned for his journey back to Riverwood. But first, lunch at tavern in Whiterun. It would also give him time to reflect on what Skjor told him, so, Lutherus arrived at the Bannered Mare with every intent to unwind, and relax.

"Afternoon, Sir. Please, have a seat. I'll have the attendant with you shortly."

Lutherus nodded. "Thank you." And parked himself opposite the roaring central fire. A bard, on the other side of the room was performing the comical 'Ragnar the Red' to the other taverngoers. A coloured woman, around Lutherus' age, approached him.

"What can I get for you Sir?" She asked, kindly.

"A jug of Milk, please. Nothing else."

"Very well Sir, that's 7 Septim please."

Lutherus handed over the correct gold, and the waitress whisked back to the kitchen to pour his dairy based drink. She returned not long after with the jug. Lutherus thanked the attendant, pulled some bread and an apple from his satchel and started to chow down.

Inside the Bannered Mare, there was an armoured clad individual. His face, illuminated by the fire kept staring down at Lutherus. His cold, unfiltered stare told stories of many battles. And the mighty two handed axe strung on his back plate reinforced this notion.

Lutherus finally noticed his audience, and made every attempt to avoid eye contact, even as much as shifting his body weight parallel to the wall he had propelled himself up against.

"Hmph." Grunted the veteran, and returned to his bread.

Lutherus finished his milk and apple, pocketing the other half of the bread back in his satchel. He leaned back against his chair, allowing his posture to relax. His legs still ached from his earlier running from Riverwood, so it was nice for him to finally take the weight off. He shut his eyes, but not to sleep, but as a method of relaxation for his mind. He was the slightest bit tired, but couldn't spare the coin for a room, so drifted off in his chair, if for a brief moment.

He awoke an hour later, to the soft grasp of the same attendant from earlier.

"Are you alright Sir?" She asked.

Lutherus woke with a slight yawn. "Very much so, thank you!" He groggily replied, partially satisfied with his brief respite. He rose from his chair and approached the bar area.

"Afternoon Sir." Said the bartend. "Something to wake you up? Perhaps some Mead?"

"No thank you ma'am." He replied. "Actually, I was hoping to ask if you had any posted bounties open?"

The bartend was surprised. Such a young gentlemen, with such a kind disposition and strong set of manners could be a bounty hunter. "Yes, I do believe I have something you're looking for." She pulled a piece of paper out with the Jarl's crest, sealed with wax on.

"There is a dangerous bandit party based in Redoran's Retreat. Jarl Balgruuf is paying top Septim for the person who can bring a stop to their antics."

"Whut?!" Came a shout. Lutherus turned, to see the veteran.

"Ya give this milk drinker a bountah? Haw haw haw! More monah fa mee then!" He said quite confidently, before making an example or Lutherus. "'E's not even arrmed! And lukat 'im, so flimsah! Ya need some muscle on ya lad!"

"It's not what a soldier is armed with that defines his spirit Sir." Countered Lutherus. "It's how he uses what he is blessed with."

"Pah!" Laughed the veteran. "Ye oviously nae been scrappin' wi' any bandit aroond 'ere eh laddie? Milk drinker!"

"That's enough Hovar. Give the boy a break." Replied the bartend. "Good luck lad."

"Thank you ma'am." Replied Lutherus, and left the tavern.

"If I'm serious of taking on these bandits, I'm going to need the help of that Bosmer." Thought Lutherus to himself, the words of the old veteran obviously having some impact on him, as he walked his way back to Riverwood. On the way, he saw Irileth marching her troops to Riverwood, as instructed by Jarl Balgruuf. Lutherus was just about to pass a waterfall on the adjacent river, when noticed a wolf on the other side. Lutherus ducked immediately to avoid being spotted, but in his minds ideas started to stir.

"I suppose it wouldn't do no harm for me to start honing my combat skills." He thought to himself, as he drew his longbow from his back, and prepared an arrow from the quiver. Lutherus stood to steady himself, exposing himself in the process, drew back on string, and...

    *thud*

Against the soft grass the arrow embedded itself. "Shit." He thought, as the Wolf was now aware of his presence. He readied another arrow...

    *crack*

The arrow broke against the rocky incline of the waterfall, missing the wolf by yards. The Wolf stirred in frustration, his Hunter having the prime advantage of terrain difference here. "Damn!" Lutherus said, and drew another arrow. The Wolf scouted for a crossing point, which Lutherus knew would mean another ugly confrontation. He chased the Wolf on the opposite side of the waterfall, leading up the road. He met the angry beast at a shallow crossing before the waterfall, and just as the wolf was ready to charge, Lutherus released his final arrow.

    *thud*

Direct hit! The arrow buried itself deep in the wolf's head. Death was instantaneous, as the wolf's lifeless body fell into the torrent of water, over the waterfall's edge, and cracking on the rocks below. Satisfied, Lutherus continued on, no point in retrieving his arrows, as they were useless now.

Lutherus continued up the road, when he heard an almighty yell, and a subsequent crash to the ground. He ran to investigate, and to his horror, discovered the lifeless body of a Whiterun Guard. Blood trickled down from the guard's busted head, and flowed down the road between the crevices in the stones. Lutherus investigated how this poor soul came to be. He observed a tree, covered in moss but not enough to render the tree unclimbable. Above on the mighty spruce, was a snapped branch. The grazings on the dead Guard's hand, indicated to Lutherus anyway, that he had climbed the tree for whatever reason, tried grabbing onto the branch, only for the weakened branch to give away, and send the man toppling to his death on the rock below. Since there was no way of identifying the poor guard, Lutherus couldn't do much except continue to Riverwood, and inform someone there.

Upon arriving at Riverwood, Lutherus alerted the tavern keeper, Delphine, to what had happened. Noting that there was also another Whiterun Guard currently in the tavern, Delphine informed him respectively, to which the Guard left the tavern to see for himself. Satisfied, Lutherus meandered around the village, looking for Hod and this Bosmer character. He found Hod supervising the gang-saw, as it ripped through the felled logs one by one into two separate pieces. The Bosmer character however, was nowhere to be found.

"Oh, that's Faendal. One of my workers here." Said Hod, after Lutherus inquired about the Bosmer. "Something you need from him traveller?"

"I hear he's a fine archer. I was hoping to solicit his training."

"Well, he's not here right now. Doubt he's going to back before tomorrow. I can give him a message on your behalf if you're not staying."

"Well, actually. I was kind of hoping you'd need some extra labour around here?"

Hod laughed. "Kid, you're alright. Of course I could do with some help around here. You cut me some wood from the piles down there, and I'll pay you for it. Okay?"

"Of course. Where do I get an axe from?"

"Oh there's bound to be one lying around the wood somewhere." Replied Hod. "I didn't seem to catch your name?"

"It's Lutherus, Sir. Nice to meet you." He replied, and went looking for the axe.

No, Lutherus is barebones right now :)
He will develop overtime, his skills becoming more adept, but for the time being, he's still a complete coward-ish.
How would I RP levelling, on the topic?

Don't feel bad over the hassle in killing the wolf. Sotek had the same sort of problems. Curiouse as to whether all Lutherus's skills have yet to be developed. Personaly I like to see characters improve over time.
