A Skyrim Tale - The Remaining - Chapter 9: Maze

  • Chapter 9: Maze

The three men rushed about, packing supplies and gathering weapons. Malachi was checking his arrows and bow string, Azeel sharpened his sword and Rodane jogged his memory of the tunnels and halls of the mountain.

“Hurry with the food!” Rodane roared in the small room.

“I’m set, it's the Redguard!” Azeel shouted back.

“I’ve been ready, waiting for you two!” Malachi retorted loudly.

Rodane shouldered the doors open, “LET’S GO THEN!”

Rodane ran towards the tunnels, he had been down here, alone in the dark for years. Tears welled in his eyes, but he blinked them away. He looked behind him, Azeel and Malachi. “First of the only two people in his life, maybe they were using him. Maybe they actually needed him to get out. Maybe they liked him.”

“No, no, no. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. They don’t know me, I’m not only down here because of the Falmer, no. I should tell them, should I? No, it’s not important. If the plan worked then they would find out soon enough,”

Rodane took a series of turns at the start of the halls, the easy turns. Took them thousands of times, Azeel and Malachi followed behind. After about fifteen minutes the trio slow, the stand at a closed door. Bars of Dwarven Steel block it from opening, each weighing a ton and bolted into the walls.

Rodane leaned against the barred door and looked down the long hall watching his two friends catch up. Malachi was first followed by Azeel, the three of them shared sme water and caught their breath.

Malachi gazed at the door, “Hmm, its barred. Heavily. What’s the plan?”

“Well this door has always been shut, never been passed,” Rodane said turning to face it. “The maintenance tunnel for the steam pipes is here, never gone. Never wanted,”

    “Yeah, GREAT IDEA!” Azeel exclaimed.

“Well Azeel, if you would like to lead us through the maze of tunnels. Be my guest!” Rodane said.

    “Well no!”

“Then shut up and follow me,” Rodane said as he pried the grate of with his one good arm.

Rodane crouch and entered slowly into the tunnel with Malachi in the middle and Azeel bringing up the rear. Left. Right. Left. Climb down the latter. Left. Left. Right. Endlessly, so many different turns. It made Azeel sick, how could anybody build this, or in the halls how could anybody find their way. Made him glad he wasn’t a Dwemer.

He saw Rodane rise and soon after Malachi, strong light flooded his dark accumsed eyes. Azeel rose from the crouch and his back ached, he collapsed on his back. Rodane pushed the grate back into place and then bent down to stretch his back. They stood on a maintenance balcony overlooking the courtroom that Utadeek and attacked them in, where the Falmer massacred them.

“This is a good enough place to rest for the night,” Rodane said.

Azeel twisted his head, “How do you know it's night down here?”

Rodane pointed to a crystal, “Room is silvery, means the moon is coming through the crystal. More reddish, means daylight,”

“Pretty sure it's just Bethesda’s light programm so the player can see without a torch,” Malachi said.

    “What?” Asked Azeel.

“Nothing, I’ll take the first watch,”
