The Tale of SuDahVin Book 1: Chapter 2

  • Chapter: Two

    Kept In The Dark

    __________________________________________________________

Su never indulged herself in such matters. It was Arngeir's soul duty to guide the Dovahkiin, so it was common for them to speak, but this was different. For El'jar to stray from his normal happy, energetic personality was rare for him. Su was always wondered how he kept such a level head. However Arngeir used to tell her that he used to be more serious in the past, during Alduin's terrene.

Despite Su's passive personality, it worried her quite a bit how Arngeir and El'jar were talking. Whenever they talked about "Dovahkiin related topics" they wouldn't be secretive about it, but this time they talked in a hushed manner.

She tried to listen in on the conversation but the sound of their talking muffled with an overwhelming sound of the repetitive talk of Tara's chit-chat. The two children climbing on her lap were distracting as well. Su tried to ignore Tara with a smile and nodding.

Tara however was smarter than the average person, learning Calligraphy, and several different languages. Unfortunately for Su, she was also very good at picking up social signals. Picking up on Su's distress she stopped talking.

"Don't worry about it Su, it's probably nothing." She said while placing her hand on Su's knee.

"You're probably right, it's just uncommon for him to act so-" Su replied being cut off by a two men walking out of the dining room.

Arngeir was frustrated, Su could tell. His sharp tone gave that away.

"Su, may I speak to you?" Arngeir said in a calm tone.

"Sure" she replied quietly as she nudged the two children off of her lap.

Arngeir held her hand leading her across the room. Leading her by hand they both made it into the courtyard. The courtyard was cold with a slight breeze. She tried to ignore the cold, but it was quite overwhelming. Arngeir let go of her hand.

She stood there rubbing her arms, shivering and shaking. She stood there for a long while, silently. Then suddenly she felt a coat get placed on her shoulders. It was a thick coat that fit her well. She felt another weight on her shoulders, it was a backpack. Su was worried, Arngeir never left her in the dark like this. Arngeir finally spoke breaking the silence.

"I'm sorry Su, but I must do this." Arngeir said. She could tell just by the tone of his voice that he was crying slightly.

Su was now extremely frightened, Arngeir never acted like this. He was always strong willed, with a firm tone. He never broke character. He always seemed brave to Su.

"What? What do you mean?" She said frantically.

"You must make your way to Paarthurnax. He will tell you what you need to know." He replied weakly.

"Paarthurnax? What do you mean? I don't understand.."

"You must make your way up to him. You must speak to him, he will teach you about your path. You must go alone..." He explained returning back to his calm and collected personality.

She stood there for a moment silently processing all of this news. She was always around the company of the Greybeards. The thought of not being under their protection was a horrifying notion that never crossed her mind. She loved their company and so many thoughts of horror went through her mind, but then a new one occurred. She has never been out of High Hrothgar, let alone out of the Greybeard's field of view. She never realized how much she dreaded being trapped there.
