Alchemy Quandries

  • Alright ladies and gentlemen, we're coming down to the wire waiting for Skyrim... at least most of are. I have to wait an extra week due to bills nomming on my wallet.

In oblivion, I never really used alchemy except as a level up exploit, much the same way as putting athletics or acrobatics as a major skill. I'd forage through city crates and farmer's gardens for as many plants and herbs I could find; then it was simply a matter of mixing them. Taking into account that most edible plants had a common restore fatigue effect, I'd get mountains of Alchemy levels in a very short time. Very little did I take the time or drop the neccessary coin to get my hands on actual potion ingredients or poisons.

My question is, since it looks like alchemy is going to be greatly enhanced, are there any specific concoctions you plan on making?

I dig enchanting but I can't quite get over that lovely green sheen that a poisoned arrow would leave my foes whenever I'd invest the effort to procure some good poisonous plants.

So, I already know that I'm going to run around with poison vials instead of enchantments at this point. What about you?

I had a lot of success using alchemy with my stealth archer in Oblivion, finding potions with multiple restoration effects and poisons with multiple damaging effects (plus paralyze) to be the most useful.
Sounds like it was different in morrowind, ...  more

In Oblivion I carried around 20 kilos potions  with me just in case. I never used them that much as I used restoration simultaneously.. In Skyrim I'll leave restoration and try to be smarter with potions.

I always hated the Burden poisons because they never stopped my enemies from moving in Morrowind or Oblivion. I hope that has changed in Skyrim because that would be sweet!  That Bandit can't move! Pelt him with arrows before the poison wears off! Lol

True, you could create potions of God-like power in Morrowind, but they radically changed the system in Oblivion by using Alchemy and Luck plus limiting potions to no more than 4 in effect at any given time.  I am curious to see what they have done in Sky...  more

In Morrowind, your creations were determined by your Alchemy skill and your Intellect. So .... create a Fortify Intellect potion. Quaff. Immediately create a new Fortify Intellect potion (while still under the effects of the potion), which will be even st...  more

Alchemy will be key to my first play-through since I only plan to improve magicka stats minimally enough to effect illusion and conjuration based spells.  So extra damage and restoration will chiefly come to my character by way of alchemy and cooking.  No...  more

Alchemy this time around looks great. In Oblivion I used it alot, not just a quick source of gold, but for the high level potions you eventually can make. The ability to create a single potion with the ability to restore all three stats at the same time (...  more
